Hi, my name is Irene Iancu. I'm a restorative dental hygienist from Toronto, Canada. And I just presented on a product that is revolutionizing the way that we practice in dentistry. If you wear loupes and you wear standard telescopes, you know that although your magnification is great, and your posture may be great, you may also be still suffering with head and neck pain because of the angle of declination and bringing your chin down and forward designs for vision and I just presented on the incorporation of ergonomic loops into everyday practice. What these loupes do is they bring your chin up, they posture back, because you're looking for a prism, which means you're looking straight down at your patient, instead of having to bring your chin down in the line of vision. Generally, what you're doing is you're looking up and forward into a prism that will then show you your working field below. It's kind of like using a microscope, but the microscope is attached to your loupes. I had a really great presentation with a room full of people that were all humming and hawing and doing their neck stretches because they perhaps can sympathize with the pain that I suffered before I went into working with ergonomic loupes.

Hey, I'm Adam Hodges, DMD. I'm a general dentist in Asheville, North Carolina working with my brother. And, and I've been using the Filtek Matrix since 2017. 

So you know, it's interesting, I think that typically you get really good at the things that you practice. So with regard to that, a lot of dentists aren't doing a lot of big anterior composite cases. And as a result, they have some trepidation about doing these cases. So they tend to avoid them. I know for me personally, that's something I did just because without that frequency, I didn't develop the skill to feel real confident with it. So that's one of the things that that's problematic. And that's why dentists tend to avoid them and offer other solutions, which may be more invasive. Now, that's not for everybody. But I'd say for me, that's why I would offer that solution, because I was a little bit nervous about my ability to deliver for my patients, and do it in a timely manner. So the Filtek matrix is, is sort of a cheat code for anterior composites, if you will. 

The interesting thing about it is one of the hardest things for us to do is to build symmetry. Again, in dental school, we were waxing teeth, we had a lot of ability to practice that skill and work with it. But once you get out, a lot of what you're doing with dentistry is reductive. And you lose that sharpness of that skill. So the field tech matrix allows you through a digital design to offer a solution where you can basically build the entire segment of the teeth with the veneers or diastema closures, and then basically just spend time finishing and polishing it back, which is the things that we're better at because that's what we practice more often. So it makes that procedure a lot more efficient. 

So for me now, where it used to take 4 and 1/2 to 5 hours to do 6 units of anterior composite dentistry. Now I'm able to do that an hour and a half predictably, and put it in my schedule. So the obvious answer is one of the biggest misconceptions that I had with regard to why patients didn't accept treatment was it was a financial barrier, and why that certainly can be an issue. I'm surprised how many of my patients now and offered a solution where we don't have to reduce their teeth, certainly a lot more interested and a lot more likely to go through a treatment. So it benefits patients because we can now get them through their life, keeping their remaining tooth structure and basically getting in through the stages of their life without having to reduce teeth, because we know that once we reduce the tooth, we're going to significantly shorten the lifespan of that tooth. So the issue is that we're preserving teeth. And we're giving them a simpler solution that's more effective, more efficient for us and more cost effective for them. 

What I like most of all, is the fact that I can predictably give this procedure to my patients. So again, an hour and a half, I can do this procedure. And I can do it predictably. And I can spend more time building an anatomy and the things that I really would prefer to do. So it just gives me confidence and confidence in a busy daily schedule of general dental office is something that I need in order to predictably want to do the procedure. And now I've got my staff members, my auxiliaries are actually becoming ambassadors. And I'm getting referrals for this procedure, because it's a solution that we know we needed. But we knew it was a pain point for dentistry. So it's just nice to have that tool in my tool chest to be able to offer my patients. So it's going to be variable for different dentists, the learning curve for different dentists will be really dependent on how much of this procedure that you do, if you don't do a whole lot of this and your practice, then maybe it'll take you 4 or 5 cases before you feel really comfortable. And then if you've done a lot of dentistry and done a lot of anterior composite dentistry, and maybe 1 or 2 cases and you're ready to go, then your only obstacle is just utilizing this new matrix to be able to do it. And it's really simple to use. And once you use it, you're like, Wow, this solution that solves a problem that I had in dentistry, just talking about this is it's one of those things. 

It's interesting that now when I'm doing this, it's improved my other–now that I'm doing the Filtek matrix system, improve my other composite dentistry, because now I'm doing it we're working on that skill a lot more often. So I can my polishing has gotten better, my contours have gotten better. I'm thinking about these skills a lot more. And if they took it away, I'm not sure that I would want to continue doing it because honestly, I think it would be back to while I may be more efficient, I wouldn't be as efficient as I am now. So for me this has really changed my practice and changed my patient's perception of what we can offer them

There is no calibration or warm-up time required.

The 99th Annual Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) kicked off Friday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center with the start of the scientific program, and the exhibit dates are set for November 26 to November 29.

Welcome to Product Bites, a weekly podcast from Dental Products Report, providing you with a rundown of recently launched an updated dental technologies, materials, instruments and everything else you might use with patients or while running your practice.

I'm your host for this week DPR, editorial director Noah Levine and on this week's podcast we've got new products from Orascoptic, Keystone Dental, Kerr, Nexa,3D, 3D Systems, Retainer Club, Dentsply Sirona, and Overjet. So let's not waste any time and get right to learning about these new industry innovations.

First up, Orascoptic recently announced the launch of the HDL Ergo 5.0x loops. They incorporate state of the art refractive prisms, and they're the highest magnification loops in Orascoptic's Ergo product line. These ergonomic loops are designed to enable clinicians to maintain an upright posture during procedures significantly reducing neck tilt and promoting better health designed to simplify procedures while enhancing aesthetics and consistency.

Keystone Dental's new GENESIS ACTIVE implant system was developed based on over a decade of research and development. The versatile system features various abutment options and a range of other innovative features. Notably the AnaTite pink anodization process of the coronal aspect of the implants mimics natural soft tissue, enhancing the mucogingival seal. The BioSparks surface treatment on the body of the implants promotes rapid osseointegration for immediate load protocols. With the Digital Guidance Sleeves, you can simplify implant placement, and the conical implant connection is designed to ensure a secure interface with high mechanical stability. The GENESIS ACTIVE implant system aims to provide a comprehensive solution for efficient and precise dental implant procedures.

ZenSeal bio-ceramic endodontic sealer from Kerr is a calcium silicate based material with optimal flowability, allowing it to adhere tightly to dentin and gutta-percha in both simple and complex root canal cases. Available in a convenient single syringe delivery system to minimize product waste per application, ZenSeal can be used on an average of 9 more teeth when compared to one of the leading sealers on the market, according to Kerr.

Nexa3D recently launched the x Cure Desktop UV curing system, which supports three different wavelengths and can reportedly reduce post processing time by as much as 80%. Encased in a rugged anodized metal enclosure for optimal durability, the xCure Desktop is designed to complete curing most parts in less than 10 minutes. The system operates with predefined curing workflows to create a seamless and efficient post processing solution.

3D Systems recently received FDA 510(k) clearance for its NextDent Base material. The third generation of the company's denture base materials, NextDent Base is optimized to offer a high break resistance along with precise printability. This durable and impact resistant material, available in four common gingiva shades, serves as an efficient and effective alternative to traditional denture base materials for full and partial dentures.

Retainer Club recently announced the launch of its new RC2 platform designed for DSOs, orthodontists, and individual practices. RC2 provides online retainer ordering and free home deliver,y a custom smile care plan incorporating post treatment support, analytics for actionable insights, revenue optimization, new patient marketing through digital advertising, and patient management and engagement to ensure awareness of treatment plans and updates.

Updates to Dentsply Sirona's DS Core cloud platform expands functionality and further strengthen the connection between dental professionals, labs, specialists, and other collaborators. Among the enhancements is the introduction of the Communication Canvas, which is designed to enable efficient and illustrative communication with patients. Its user interface allows clinicians to arrange patient images, such as x-rays, scans, and photos in a way that best illustrates the treatment plan. Additionally, DS Core viewer function now supports STL and PLY data formats, which makes the platform more compatible with third party intraoral scanners. Also, the new unified ordering system is designed to simplify communication between clinicians and dental labs.

Finally, this week, Overjet recently announced its received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Periapical radiolucency (PARL) Assist software. The new solution is designed to aid dentists by identifying and segmenting instances of radiolucency is on periapical radiographs for patients aged 12 and above. To develop PARL Assist, clinicians annotated tens of thousands of clinically validated instances of periapical radiolucencies across diverse clinical scenarios, which were used to train overjet algorithms. The reference standard testing set was meticulously created with multi consensus agreement by expert US licensed endodontists.

The comprehensive workflow combines the cutting-edge Planmeca Emerald® S scanner, the intuitive Planmeca PlanCAD® Premium Design software, and the Elos Accurate Pre-Milled Blank Solution seamlessly milled in the Planmeca PlanMill 60 S. This integration empowers dental professionals to plan and execute customized titanium abutments efficiently, enhancing the overall restorative care experience for patients.

"Practices offering chairside milling focus on a positive, convenient patient experience for a differentiated level of dentistry," stated Lou Vodopivec, Planmeca Vice President of Marketing and Education. "This addition to the capabilities of our most versatile mill–the Planmeca PlanMill 60 S–makes it an attractive feature for offices attuned to the benefits of a high-capacity production mill for outstanding restorative care."

The collaboration between Planmeca and Elos Medtech aims to simplify the end-to-end process, providing stability and predictability in outcomes without the need for outsourcing, per the press release. Gavin Sternberg, Director of CAD/CAM and Technical Support at Planmeca, emphasized the economic advantages for clinics, stating, "Clinics choosing a Planmeca understand the benefits of reduced costs and increased revenue. The high degree of personalization with custom titanium abutments is another plus for a practice to deliver exceptional restorative care that is important to our customers."

Elos Medtech, a key partner in this venture, plays a crucial role in ensuring FDA compliance. Søren Olesen, Executive VP of Dental at Elos Medtech, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, "Our partnership has streamlined the process of manufacturing titanium custom abutments in-house and made it possible for clinics to deliver personalized and esthetically pleasing results to patients, secure in the knowledge they are in full regulatory compliance."

This expansion of the Planmeca PlanMill 60 S capabilities marks a significant stride towards providing dental professionals with an efficient, reliable, and compliant solution for in-house milling, ultimately raising the bar in esthetic dentistry and patient care.

Dentsply Sirona Expands its 3D Printing Resin Portfolio |

With new 3D printing resins Primeprint Splint ST and Primeprint Splint SF now Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CE cleared, Dentsply Sirona is enhancing the range of applications for its PrimeprintSolution.

These additions to its resin portfolio allow Dentsply Sirona to answer the needs of dental professionals to fabricate patient-specific nightguards and splints for a variety of treatments that fit precisely and provide a high level of biocompatibility. Demand for these splints in dental practices is increasing, for example by patients with bruxism, according to Dentsply Sirona, the world's largest manufacturer of professional dental products and technologies.

When manufacturing these nightguards with Primeprint Solution, users experience several advantages in addition to the high degree of automation from the Dentsply Sirona 3D printing system. With a new innovative Primeprint Material Unit Type S and application specifically developed print processes, the new splint solution is said to reduce much of the manual work that would otherwise be necessary, such as time-consuming polishing. According to the manufacturer, the results are shiny after the post-curing process and can be easily detached from the support structures.

Primeprint Splint ST and Primeprint Splint SF resins allow to be printed with thin wall thickness – starting at 0.8 mm. The resins provide different degrees of hardness and flexibility and can thus be selected according to the indication and the patient’s needs. To provide optimal patient wear comfort they are free of MMA, THF-MA, and TPO2, allowing a neutral taste and scent.

Simplified Workflows with Primeprint Solution

The new resins are designed to be used in the Primeprint 3D printing system and can be used within a variety of workflows. Dental professionals have the option to handle the design themselves using inLab Software, order the design from DS Core Create, or they can order it from their preferred dental lab. When using DS Core Create design services, the splint design is provided within the turnaround time of 6 hours as a ready-to-print file, states Dentsply Sirona. This allows for immediate production, which makes it easy to delegate the workflow to staff members.

"Thanks to the new splint solution, I can now offer expanded indications for my patients with 3D printing," Meena Barsoum, DMD, a dentist from Arlington Heights, Illinois, and one of the first users of the new Primeprint Splint ST and Primeprint Splint SF resins, explains in a press release. "I love how easy it is to remove the support structures after the automated post-processing in the PPU, and my patients appreciate both the wearing comfort and the esthetics."

Max Milz, group vice president connected technology solutions at Dentsply Sirona, adds in the press release, "This innovation is another step toward advancing automated 3D printing in practices and laboratories. So dental 3D printing is once again proving to be a highly attractive technology that is particularly suitable for fabricating non-permanent removable applications such as splints, surgical guides, and models and seamlessly complements existing methods."

Dentsply Sirona Expands its 3D Printing Resin Portfolio

Envista Holdings Corporation announced the release of its 2022 Sustainability Report last week and among the finding is a meaningful year-over-year reduction in the company’s greenhouse gas emissions. The report details Envista’s efforts to incorporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into its mission to digitize, personalize, and democratize dental care.

According to the report, Envista serves more than a million dentists in over 140 countries through one of the largest commercial organizations in the dental products industry and through their dealer partners. In 2022, the company generated total sales of $2.6 billion, of which approximately 83% were derived from sales of consumables, services, and spare parts.
