Olga Beresneva, MD, is a colorectal surgeon at Boston Medical Center (BMC) with expertise in robotic surgery. Her clinical and research interests include new technologies and techniques to treat colorectal disorders, and colorectal surgery quality improvement and outcomes. Dr Beresneva is also an assistant professor of Surgery at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. She received her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine, completed a general surgery residency at Boston Medical Center, and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center.

Vyne Dental Plans are accessible through the trusted Vyne Trellis platform, and they're designed to help providers offer new options for patients who are uninsured or those who prefer to pay out of pocket. The new membership plan subscriptions cover items such as preventive care while offering reduced pricing on specified treatments and services.

Next up, Dentsply Sirona recently announced that it has received both FDA and CE clearance for Primeprint Splint ST and Primeprint Splint SF, a pair of new material options for the production of patient-specific nightguards and splints using the Primeprint 3D printing platform. The materials can be used to produce precise appliances with walls as thin is 0.8 millimeters via workflow that optimizes automation and eliminates time consuming manual tasks such as polishing splints after curing. The materials allow clinicians to offer patients appliances with different degrees of hardness and flexibility tailored to their specific indications and needs. These resins, free of MMA THF-MA and TPO2, are said to offer optimal patient wear comfort with a neutral taste and scent.

In a collaborative effort to address the global issue of childhood cavities, Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures® (BSBF) program and Hip Hop Public Health (HHPH) have announced the release of the Paste Time Educator Toolkit. This educational resource is designed to assist educators in seamlessly incorporating oral health education into their curricula, using an engaging and music-centric approach that is free to access.

Building on the success of their bilingual song, "Paste Time," the Paste Time Educator Toolkit was developed in consultation with experts as well as with Hip Hop Public Health's Educator Review Group. Aligned with National Health Education Standards, National Physical Education Standards, and Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) core competencies, the toolkit aims to equip educators to teach students about the critical importance of good oral health, according to a press release from the company.

The Paste Time Educator Toolkit offers a comprehensive set of resources for teachers. These include a well-structured lesson plan, classroom slides, interactive activities, family take-home materials, teaching guidance, and optional lesson extension activities. Although developed with third to fifth graders in mind, the toolkit's flexible design allows educators to adapt the materials for elementary students at all grade levels.

Lindsey Harr, Chief Programs and Operations Officer for Hip Hop Public Health, expressed enthusiasm about the toolkit, stating, "Every single day, educators are out there, doing incredible work, empowering young people with the lifelong skills they need to champion their health. That's why we've created the Paste Time Educator Toolkit – where music takes center stage to make oral health education engaging and fun."

Dr Gillian Barclay, Senior Vice President Global Oral Health and Scientific Affairs at Colgate-Palmolive Company, and a Hip Hop Public Health Board Member, emphasized the power of music in making messages memorable. She stated, "As a medium, music makes messages memorable, and both Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures and Hip Hop Public Health are laser-focused on promoting health literacy in a manner that is relevant to the communities we serve and helps create brighter futures."

Hip Hop Public Health, known for 15 years of using music and culture to improve health in underserved communities, believes in removing access barriers for teaching, learning, and health literacy. The Paste Time video, produced and composed by Q. Worth and co-writer BJ Gray, features contributions from Doug E. Fresh, Dr Olajide Williams of Columbia University, youth artist Heaven, and Dr Monique "Docta Mo Flow" Hedmann-Maxey.

Colgate's Bright Smiles, Bright Futures program, established in 1991, has reached over 1.6 billion children in more than 100 countries with oral health education. The program strategically partners to reach underserved children and their families, promoting health equity and empowering them to achieve healthy and bright futures. In the United States, BSBF dental vans, based in hub cities, travel to rural and urban communities, raising awareness about the importance of children's oral health.

Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures® and Hip Hop Public Health have unveiled the Paste Time Educator Toolkit, a free online resource designed to help teachers integrate engaging oral health education into their curricula using the power of music.

The FDA has granted 510(k) clearance to Vivos Therapeutics, Inc. for its removable CARE (Complete Airway Repositioning and/or Expansion) oral appliances for adults with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The clearance includes the company’s flagship DNA oral appliance, the mRNA oral appliance, and the mmRNA oral appliance.

“Make no mistake: this is a huge development on the landscape of treatments for OSA. As the medical profession has gained a better understanding of the complex factors contributing to OSA, we now recognize that a critical component to this condition is the form and functionality of the oral vault,” said medical sleep specialist David McCarty, MD, in a press release.

 “This is where medical collaboration with an airway-centered dentistry approach like Vivos offers is a game-changer. This decision by the FDA could be life changing for patients who suffer from severe OSA and for whom other treatments have failed.”

The clearance makes Vivos the first company to receive FDA approval for, and to bring to market, an alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or surgical neurostimulation implants for patients with severe OSA. Eleven months earlier, the FDA granted Vivos 510(k) clearance for its DNA oral appliance that treats mild-to-moderate OSA. According to Vivos, this is the first time the FDA has granted clearance to an oral appliance indicated for moderate and severe OSA in adults, 18 years of age and older, along with positive airway pressure (PAP) and/or myofunctional therapy.

“This achievement is a pivotal milestone for Vivos and elevates our proven treatment options right into the mainstream of sleep medicine. It is even more important for the millions of severe OSA patients who are desperate for an effective alternative treatment,” said Kirk Huntsman, chairman and CEO of Vivos, in a press release. “Before this, severe OSA patients’ only realistic treatment options were CPAP, neurostimulation implants or other invasive surgeries. Today, they have what we believe is a far more desirable option that is very affordable and doesn’t require surgery or a lifetime of nightly use and intervention.”

In patients with OSA, breathing is interrupted during sleep for at least 10 seconds for an average of at least five times per hour during sleep. Risk factors for OSA include excess weight, older age, narrowed airway, hypertension, smoking, chronic nasal congestion, diabetes, and asthma.

Vivos reported that data submitted to the FDA from 73 patients with severe OSA showed 80% achieved an improvement of at least one classification or at least a 50% improvement in the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI), whereas 97% of patients improved or stayed the same over an average treatment time of 9.7 months. The company reported that treatment results were superior among patients with severe OSA compared with patients with mild and moderate OSA.

“Vivos trained providers can now treat patients with OSA and conditions associated with OSA comprehensively using our suite of FDA cleared devices, without regard to the severity of their OSA condition and across a range of price point options,” Huntsman said in the release. “We believe this unprecedented decision by the FDA will generate broader acceptance throughout the medical community for Vivos treatment options, leading to the potential for higher patient referrals and case starts as well as collaboration with medical professionals. We also believe it will enhance our value proposition to third-party distribution partners such as durable medical equipment (DME) companies. This approval could also clear the way for greater reimbursement levels from medical insurance payors and Medicare. We believe that all these factors should favorably impact our ability to grow our revenues in 2024 and beyond.”

With its Dream Dental virtual reality (VR) solution, Paperplane Therapeutics is aiming to help dental practices increase efficiency by decreasing disruptions caused by dental patients and their anxiety about dental treatment.

The Dream Dental platform was developed with the needs of dental practitioners in mind. Patients wear a VR headset and are immersed in a game or series of puzzles that keep the patient focused on the virtual environment rather than the discomfort or fear they might feel about their dental care. While most VR environments put a viewer in a 3-dimensional space that changes when the viewer’s head turns, dental patients need to remain still during treatment, and the Dream Dental platform is designed so that when the patient’s head moves, the virtual environment narrows in until the motion is stopped. With this system patients quickly learn to keep still to ensure an uninterrupted VR experience, according to representatives from Paperplane Therapeutics.

Clinicians can control the experience being shown in the VR headset from an iPad, and can see on the screen what the patient is looking at. This allows the clinician to quickly set up the VR experience for a patient, and ensure that everything is working properly. The Dream Dental VR headset includes audio from the virtual environment, but patients can clearly hear instructions from the clinician while wearing the headset. Additionally, a camera built into the headset allows patients to view and speak with clinicians without having to remove or adjust the headset. This allows the patient to wear the headset comfortably throughout the entire appointment.

The Dream Dental platform is designed with pediatric patients in mind, and the VR games are played with a handheld control as well as software to track eye movements within the VR headset. This allows the wearer to interact with the virtual environment to solve puzzles or clear a game level while remaining still for the patient.

This new solution aims to help keep patients relaxed and calm during dental procedures without interfering with clinicians during treatment.

Dream Dental Is a New Interactive Virtual Reality Platform for Dental Patients from Paperplane Therapeutics

The Zolar Photon EXE dental diode laser from Zolar Technologies is designed to make dental diode laser treatments easy for dentists and hygienists.

The new laser system is compact and portable with a large touchscreen control panel. The interactive control interface provides instant access to more than 30 preset laser treatment protocols which can all be customized to match any clinician’s preference. Additionally, the laser includes complete user instructions accessible through the touchscreen.

The Photon EXE is available in 2 versions, the Photon EXE and the Photon EXE Plus. Both units offer the same compact footprint and weigh less than 2 kgs. The Photon EXE operates at a wavelength of 810 nm, and can produce up to 3W of power. The Photon EXE Plus operates at a wavelength of 980 nm, and can produce up to 10W of power. Both units can operate in continuous or pulse modes, with customizable timing for the pulse intervals and duration.

These new diode systems are designed for procedures including exposure of uninterrupted teeth, gingival troughing, implant recovery, soft tissue crown lengthening, fibroma removal, and much more. Additional laser attachments allow the Photon EXE and and Photon EXE Plus to provide Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) pain management services as well as laser bleaching.

With the Photon EXE and the Photon EXE Plus, users have a choice between using cutting fiber that must be stripped before use, or using disposable tips for the laser handpiece.
