The Delta Dental Institute has announced the inaugural award recipients of over $700,000 from the Delta Dental Oral Health Diversity Fund, as part of its 

Driving Greater Diversity in the Oral Health Workforce

 campaign. This initiative focuses on encouraging more school-aged children from historically underrepresented groups to consider careers in oral health.

 They offer the Diversify Dentistry Youth Summit™, providing high school students from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds with hands-on experiences, educational insights, and mentorship to inspire them to consider a career in dentistry. This program's toolkit will be expanded to serve as a guide for dental schools to host similar events.

 Their program, BOLD: Building Our Leaders in Dentistry, is a pre-dental school mentorship program designed to introduce dentistry as a career option to students and influence more underrepresented minorities to enter the profession. Outreach presentations and workshops will be geared toward students at various education levels, from Head Start to undergraduate students.

 They will establish a program called "Promoting Oral Health Pathways," which will be a curriculum within their Academy of Health Sciences. This program includes authentic, project-based learning activities that can be applied to solve challenges in a student's career field or community, along with opportunities for immersive, work-based learning with experts to help students make informed decisions about their futures.

 Their program, "Telling the Story of a Path to Dentistry: Connecting AI/AN Dentists with AI/AN Youth," aims to address the lack of dentist role models in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. Volunteer AI/AN dentists will present to Native students in their community high schools, sharing their unique journeys to becoming dentists and inspiring more Native youth to consider a career in dentistry.

The goal of these programs is to address the current lack of racial and ethnic diversity in the oral health workforce. Research has shown that increasing diversity among health professionals leads to better patient satisfaction and improved health outcomes. Currently, fewer than 10% of dentists are Black or Hispanic, while these groups comprise more than 30% of the U.S. population, according to Delta Dental.

"As the nation's oral health leader and its largest oral health philanthropist, Delta Dental embraces the opportunity to address the needs of the diverse communities we serve and to contribute to more equitable health outcomes," says James W. Hutchison, President & CEO of Delta Dental Plans Association, in a press release. Delta Dental aims to close this diversity gap and improve health equity by investing in organizations that provide opportunities for youth from diverse communities to consider and prepare for careers in oral health. The next round of applications for the Delta Dental Oral Health Diversity Fund will open in the Spring of 2024.

PreXion Launches New X-Ray Sensor Along With 3-in-1 Imaging System

Amann Girrbach recently introduced Ceramill DRS Software Upgrade 1.5, which brings new features, expanded indications, streamlined workflows and additional materials to users of this chairside CAD/CAM solution, according to a press release. The upgrades include improvements to the Ceramill Map DRS, Ceramill Mind DRS, and Ceramill Motion DRS software platforms.

The upgrades start with the new Ceramill Software Manager which is designed to simplify installation and updating of the Ceramill DRS software. Users will receive automatic notifications of available upgrades, along with a complete overview of all the new features.

With the update to the CeraMill Map DRS scanning software, the system’s intraoral scanner receives enhanced speed and scanning performance. The user interface is also updated to include new user-friendly icons and the 3D scan display color has also been improved.

"Optimized algorithms enable smarter and faster scanning, resulting in a smooth scanning process without waiting periods. This enables even less experienced users to achieve precise results," Robert Rosiak, senior product manager business unit clinical CAD/CAM at Amann Girrbach explains in a press release. "Scanning planes can now be easily duplicated, switched, erased, or specific areas can be locked.”.

With the software update the Ceramill Motion DRS milling machine has access to enhanced milling strategies and is compatible with a broader ranger of materials. The mill is now capable of processing all block materials with universal mandrels. The mill now offers both validated and generic milling strategies for use with different materials.

"This offers users maximum flexibility. Validated strategies are possible for selected manufacturers and materials, and generic strategies are thus possible for all others," Rosiak says.

The software update also adds the new Ceramill DRS abutment workflow to the system. Via the Ceramill Mind DRS M-Plant upgrade module, users can design and mill screw-retained crowns and two-piece individual abutments with simple workflows. The solution works with multiple implant systems including validated libraries from Medentika and Tri-Implant Matrix, as well as compatibility with exocad-signed libraries. With the new workflow and the Zolid DRS sintering material, a screw-retained molar crown can be produced in approximately 25 minutes and sintered in 30 minutes.

"In-house production not only increases speed, but also results in enormous cost savings - while at the same time ensuring maximum precision and quality," says Amann Girrbach Senior Product Manager Business Unit Clinical CAD/CAM Elena Bleil.

The software update also adds access to the Artex CR virtual articulator,

adjustment of abrasion facets for more natural restoration design, a color visualization of free-form areas, and the addition of the partial crown indication.

"All these innovations contribute to making the software easier to use and thus more user-friendly. As a consequence, less reworking of the restoration in the patient's mouth is required," says Bleil.

ZimVie Expands Dental Laboratory Solutions With the Launch of the Azure Multi-Platform Product Solutions

, researchers from the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences at King’s College London present promising results from early research using Metformin, a medication commonly used to treat Type 2 Diabetes, as a potential therapy for periodontal disease.

With numerous studies connecting periodontal disease to diabetes, as well as other inflammatory systemic conditions, a research team led by King’s College Academic Clinical Lecturer and Periodontology Registrar Vitor Neves, BDS, PhD, looked at how periodontal disease responds to Metformin in both an in vivo study and in a controlled clinical trial.

The drug, which helps control glucose metabolism, is safe and inexpensive, making it a potential option for widespread use to manage and potentially prevent periodontal disease, according to the study, 

“Repurposing Metformin for periodontal disease management as a form of oral-systemic preventive medicine”

“Our patients do not often have any tools to fight against gum disease other than brushing their teeth, but for the first time we have a potential tool that can help not only with gum disease, but overall health,” Dr Neves says in a press release. “Metformin is readily available around the world and is cheap, therefore allowing the drug to be used as a preventive medicine for oral and systemic diseases that could be adopted on a global scale. This would help many to age healthier—all starting from taking care of their mouths.”

Previous research with mice showed promise with Metformin and periodontal disease, and the first part of Dr Neves’ team’s research built on this to look at how the medication impacted bone loss from both periodontal disease and aging. Their research with mice found Metformin use led to significant bone loss reduction in both the periodontal and aging studies. Additionally, they looked at the medication’s impact on the oral microbiome and found it created a significantly different oral environment.

The impact of Metformin on gingival tissue was also examined at a cellular level. This phase of the research demonstrated the drug’s potential as a preventive measure against periodontal disease, as they found evidence that it can potentially impact the formation of periodontal disease at the molecular level.

As the project moved to the control trial phase, the research looked at the practical application of Metformin with a study examining its impact on modulating systemic inflammation in the immediate post-treatment phase for patients with periodontal disease. Non-diabetic patients with periodontal disease were given Metformin after full-mouth non-surgical periodontal treatment and outcomes were compared against a control group. The trial showed improved periodontal parameters for the Metformin cohort when compared to the placebo group.

While the outcomes are promising, the study notes the need for further testing and larger clinical trials to determine the optimal dosage and delivery of Metformin as a periodontal treatment.

A dental practice owner looking for a dental practice evaluator is not putting himself in the best situation if the person leading the way is an attorney. That is because it is rare for an attorney to have had much if any experience in representing dental practices in general.

The situation with a divorce is even more complex than a divorce situation with a general business person. The main difference between the general business situation and the dental practice is goodwill and its significant value to the dental practice compared to its less-than-important value to the general business.

For the plaintiff or defendant in a dental practice divorce situation who has never been involved with litigation before, the retention of an attorney may seem like 1 step closer to completion. Unfortunately, this will not be the case if the attorney with no knowledge of dental practices or just a little bit of knowledge about the subject knows little about the occurrences in a dental practice. This expert attorney will need a lot of assistance in preparing his or her case for the courtroom and proceeding to trial. If the attorney has the humility or lack of ego to request help, the best place for him or her to go with the request is to a dental CPA.

A dental CPA who has had experience with dental practices as well as with dental practice evaluations and evaluations and the courtroom will be the best person to assist the attorney with his or her case. For the client, the time spent preparing for the trial can be overwhelming. The hours and days of finding information that is needed for the proof presented when the trial is taking place become a true hardship. The work being undertaken and the time away from working with his or her dental practice becomes a severe financial burden for the client. Patients may start looking elsewhere for their oral care needs if their regular caregiver is not available to them. Constantly switching appointments with their patients is not a good thing to do even though it may not be avoidable as the information gathering seems to never come to an end.

Understanding the Importance of Goodwill to Both the Dentist and the Dental Practice 

There is also the need for money to pay the attorney and the dental CPA as they spend enormous amounts of time in the preparation of the case for the courtroom. The format for trial must be addressed like it will be going to court or at least to settlement conferences so there really shouldn’t be any skipping in the gathering of data and in its presentation. The frustration by the client is something that is really difficult to quantify since to those who have not been to court, the never-ending requests to gather information and then find more data for responses to depositions and settlement conferences seems surreal.

With the hard work and years of identity building spent with the dental practice, the amount of time incurred with the preparation for the trial seems like it is pulling away the work that was done to build the practice. The reputation of employees can be severely affected by the time and money spent on the preparation for the trial as it took away from the relationships that took years to build. The only alternative to end this drain of time and money and loss of dental practice credibility may be a settlement that may cost thousands of dollars more than expected in a trial. This may leave the dentist in an almost impossible situation concerning the options that are available. There is no easy way for the dentist to end this problem where he or she can feel like whatever choice is taken will be the correct one so that his or her life can go on peacefully.

If the dentist chooses to retain an attorney without the advice of his or her dental CPA, the hope is that the attorney does not possess such a big ego that the advice of the dental CPA is ignored. In the almost perfect situation, the dentist has retained the dental CPA first, and this person then assists with the hiring of the attorney. This is because the dental CPA has probably worked with attorneys in the past who have represented practices during divorce proceedings.

This process allows the dental CPA to know those attorneys who have excelled with their representation of dental practices and those who have not. This will be of the utmost importance for the determination of which party to the divorce case receives what amount of distribution from the dental practice. Being prepared is extremely important since it is the dentist’s practice that is being looked at for its division.
