Welcome to Product Bites, a weekly podcast from Dental Products Report, providing you with a rundown of recently launched an updated dental technologies, materials, instruments and everything else you might use with patients or while running your practice.

I'm your host for this week DPR editorial director Noah Levine, and on this week's podcast, we've got a bunch of new products we'll be covering, including new launches from SprintRay, Formlabs, VITA North America, Listerine, aka Kenvue, and ZimVie. So let's not waste any time and jump right in to learn about these new innovative dental product solutions.

FDA-cleared for fixed, implant-supported denture prosthetics, OnX Tough 2 3D printing resin from SprintRay is said to provide industry leading fracture toughness without compromising esthetics. Featuring the company's proprietary NanoFusion technology that optimally suspends ceramic within the resin formulation to minimize mixing and enhance structural integrity, dentists can now utilize this material in an integrated streamlined 3d printing chairside workflow. OnX Tough 2 can be used for the production of high-quality full-arch fixed denture restorations. The workflow can produce up to 10 fixed dentures in just 30 minutes. The resin is currently available in shades bleach, A1, and A2.

A Class I FDA-registered biocompatible material, IBT Flex resin from Formlabs is a 3D printing resin designed for the production of indirect bonding trays and direct composite restoration guides, both of which require highly accurate production. With enhanced flexibility, tear resistance and translucency, this material is said to be part of an efficient and cost effective workflow for clinics or labs who need to produce highly accurate patient specific parts.

VITA North America recently announced an enhanced VITA VIONIC SOLUTIONS portfolio of denture materials. This expanded portfolio includes the VITA VIONIC Dent Disc multicolor, which is designed for the CAD/CAM production of teeth for partial and full dentures. Composed of an inorganically filled PMMA composite material, it is said to be more abrasion resistant than comparable products. The disc features a unique integrated shade gradient to produce denture teeth with lifelike shade matching and enhanced color stability.

Also part of the expanded portfolio VITA VIONIC BASE DISC HI is designed to produce impact resistant and durable denture bases. Available in three gingiva shades, the discs are suited for fabrication of both full and partial dentures, and the material is said to produce optimal fits at the alveolar ridge.

Finally from VITA North America, the VITA VIONIC Digital VIGO Denture Library can be used to digitally design and setup both partial and full dentures for either milled or printed production. The library allows users to choose from seven predefined setup concepts. Designs can be exported for fabrication of try-on, dentures, denture bases and tooth elements, or for denture design in combination with the prefabricated VITA VIONIC VIGO denture teeth.

Kenvue, the maker of Listerine has launched its Listerine Clinical Solutions mouthwash line with three distinct formulations each designed to help patients manage different oral health conditions. The antiseptic Gum Health Mouthwash includes more tartar preventing zinc chloride than other Listerine products, and promises a 64% decrease in gum bleeding within just one week compared to brushing alone. Additionally, it offers patients 4.6 times more prolonged plaque reduction above the gumline compared to dental flossing. Next, the Breath Defense Mouthwash offers 24 hour fresh breath via innovative technology that is said to neutralize and transform odor molecules. Finally, the Teeth Strength Mouthwash reinforces tooth surfaces by enhancing fluoride uptake and promoting remineralization. When used in conjunction with brushing, it's said to repair enamel immediately, helping prevent cavities and reportedly making teeth three times stronger.

Finally, ZimVie recently announced the launch of Biotivity A/C Plus Membrane. The membrane is designed for site coverage and protection against the oral environment. It contains a rich blend of growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, and hyaluronic acid to facilitate optimal wound healing. Derived from human placental tissue, the Biotivity A/C Plus Membrane boasts a growth factor charged composition. This biomaterial undergoes minimal manipulation using proprietary processing techniques. These methods are said to preserve natural mechanical properties, elasticities, and a host of biological enhancers, including growth factors and cytokines. The product sterilization is ensured through the Excellion process and terminal sterilization with electron beam irradiation Biotivity A/C Plus Membranes are not treated with antibiotics during processing.

How much do we really care about patients? This may be a loaded question, but let’s be honest. Do we even have time to care if they are suffering? Or is it just about production—getting them in on time, finishing up, and getting the room flipped for the next one.

My patient, Cierra, made me stop in my tracks today. To be honest, Cierra is one of my favorite patients; she is always laughing, energetic, and is a true fashionista. When Cierra came in today, she was walking cautiously. There wasn’t the usual bounce in her step, and she looked a bit stiff. Cierra told me that she was experiencing severe pain everywhere due to some kind of neurological syndrome that was rapidly progressing. I am not going to get into the specifics, but she landed at my doorstep with her temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reactivated, which had been stable for the past 5 years.

I felt terrible and wanted to help. Our practice was doing all the usual things we do when someone is suffering like this, and Cierra was doing everything she could to get the care she needed, but she was overwhelmed. I took some time to just sit and listen to her story, and it frightened me. If you don’t have your wits about you or have resources, you are in trouble.

Cierra is a healthy 32-year-old mother of 2, does Zumba 3 times per week, is a vegetarian, and lives a very active lifestyle. She started having pain in her legs and feet a couple months ago, and it just started spreading. The pain doesn’t follow a particular pattern and it comes and goes. She showed me a video of her getting out of bed in the morning, and it looked like her feet were heavy and she couldn’t lift her legs. I am not a doctor, but I thought maybe it could be multiple sclerosis, or something that might land her in a wheelchair. It gets better and worse throughout her day, but her world has gotten smaller.

She can’t lift her baby anymore, as her muscle strength is becoming weaker. Maybe part of it is fear that she might drop her daughter, I don’t know, but fear is debilitating. She isn’t able work and standing on her feet can be a problem, so she is focused on getting her health back. She puts her kids in day care and stays off her feet as much as possible. The pain has migrated into her neck, and her TMJ is excruciating.

Despite all this, she keeps going. What choice does she have? She advocates for herself and is trying to get the help she needs, but her doctor isn’t helping. Telling a patient, “I don’t know who to refer you to,” doesn’t give them confidence. Her internist should just ask another doctor for their opinion.

Cierra was excited because she received some alarming iron deficiency results, which may be a step toward solving this mystery. Her teeth started to bleed when she brushed them, so she sent a message to her doctor and was reprimanded for sending emails. This is a patient who is declining rapidly, who has crawled 3 times in the past week because her feet didn’t work, and who finally got a referral from her doctor to neurology—but her appointment is 5 weeks out.

She asked her doctor for help to call neurology to get her in earlier and was told she couldn’t help her with that. Now, here she is in our office. Cierra has always been a delightful patient—what could we do to help?

I felt terrible. Maybe I shouldn’t have taken so much time to sit and listen to her, as this wasn’t really a dental issue, but how couldn’t I? I was watching someone suffer, and we are but 1 part of the mystery. Of course, we will get on the phone and advocate for her to her doctor, but this is sobering. We are busy. Everyone is busy. This patient is going down the rabbit hole and I feel powerless. I cried right alongside her. There really was nothing else I could do.

We never really talk about how powerless we feel in health care or dentistry when bad things happen, and we can’t make miracles happen. We will do our best. Sometimes we bring these nightmares home with us, and it keeps us up at night. Taking the time to just sit with her and get the dentist to call her doctor was the best I could do. We gave her everything we could think of regarding treatment, but this was neurological in nature. I felt like a failure, but sometimes there just is nothing else we can do.

Company launches first of its kind comprehensive PPO health insurance plan to assist temporary hygienists, dental assistants and others who are part of the dental staffing platform.

onDiem Offering the First PPO Health Insurance Plan for Temporary Dental Staff Through UnitedHealthcare

ASI Dental Specialties recently introduced the GliderLite, an over-the-patient dental surgical table. Compact but versatile, this new surgical table is designed to make it easy to make everything needed during a procedure conveniently in reach, even in smaller operatory spaces.

The surgical table is designed to be positioned over standard or surgical-style dental patient chairs, and it features heavy-duty casters and a handle on each side to make it easy to navigate around an operatory.

The main worktop is non-porous and designed to provide the space needed to set out sterile instruments and cassettes as well as other materials and accessories that will be used during a procedure. It measures 45.5 in wide by 23 in deep, and is easy to clean.

An optional floating instrument shelf sits above the main worktop, and it can be easily maneuvered into position when needed or shifted out of the way when not needed. Additionally, 2 side dovetail rails can be used to attach additional trays, sharps containers, dispensers, saline irrigation/IV hooks, or miniature waste receptacles.

ASI Dental Specialties Introduces GliderLite Over-the-Patient Dental Surgical Table

The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) announced that Jim Glidewell, CDT, the founder and president of Glidewell is the recipient of the 2023 Isiah Lew Memorial Research Award.

Each year the AAID presents the award to an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of implant dentistry. Glidewell was chosen to receive the award based on the number of innovations he and his company have pioneered in both CAD/CAM implant restorations and implant manufacturing.

Known for driving the rise of zirconia restorations with the signature BruxZir® Zirconia, Glidewell’s accomplishments including developing dental implant systems, digital treatment planning and surgical guide solutions, and CAD/CAM fabrication techniques for various implant restorations, have helped make implant dentistry an established part of many practices, according to a press release from Glidewell.

The development of the Inclusive product line in 2011 allowed Glidewell to help make implants more accessible to clinicians and patients. The ISO-certified Inclusive implant components are compatible with leading systems, and this allowed Glidewell's implant lab to flat-rate lab fees, reducing the expense of restoring implants for dentists. Heartland Dental experienced overwhelming success with its third annual Companywide Free Dentistry Day, held on September 9, 2023. Free Dentistry Day underscores Heartland Dental's unwavering commitment to giving back to the communities it serves and its supported doctors' dedication to providing essential dental care to those who might otherwise lack access to vital dental services.

This year, Heartland Dental's network of supported doctors joined forces to give back, offering easily accessible, top-quality dental care free of charge. A remarkable 251 Heartland Dental-supported offices across the United States participated in this charitable event, collectively providing essential dental services like professional cleanings, dental fillings, and tooth extractions to an impressive 4,379 patients.

Heartland Dental's Companywide Free Dentistry Day success was greatly bolstered by generous dental supply donations from industry leaders, Henry Schein Cares, Envista Smile Project, and Leixir Dental Group. This collaborative effort underscores the shared commitment of these companies to empower supported doctors in addressing the dental hygiene needs of underserved communities.

Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, reflected on Heartland Dental's initiative, stating in the press release: "Henry Schein is dedicated to actively championing initiatives and programs that enhance access to oral healthcare for underserved and underrepresented communities, in close collaboration with our valued healthcare partners. Envista Smile Project, a philanthropic foundation dedicated to providing oral health education to underserved communities worldwide, also contributed to the success of Free Dentistry Day.
