We recently talked to Dr. Brien Hsu and his assistant, Teresa Munoz, RDA, about their recent purchase of RAYSCAN α – Expert, a multi-function digital extraoral imaging system with 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), panoramic and cephalometric capabilities.
DPR: What first interested you in the RAYSCAN α?
Dr. Hsu: I was at the California Dental Association meeting in Anaheim and was checking out the various CBCT units at different booths. At the LED Dental booth, I saw the affiliation with Samsung, and that was important to me because it’s such a well known brand. The unit was one of the sleekest-looking pieces of technology I had seen, and the reps at the booth were helpful and not pushy at all. Also, I saw the unit has a wireless remote for positioning patients, and I knew that would allow us to position patients easier.
DPR: You mentioned the affiliation between Samsung and LED Dental. How big of a factor was that in your final purchasing decision?
Dr. Hsu: It was big. We already have 10 Samsung flatscreen TVs in our practice, and I knew a lot about the brand already. I also knew Samsung’s customer service was hard to beat. During the process, LED Dental was open extended hours to fit into my schedule.
DPR: What made you decide to purchase the RAYSCAN α?
Dr. Hsu: We had always had a panoramic unit, and we were looking to upgrade. I wanted to have a faster CBCT unit. Additionally, we place implants in our practice, and I believe CBCT should be the standard of care. By using our RAYSCAN α unit, we can place implants with confidence and know exactly what we are dealing with when planning a third molar extraction.
DPR: What kind of “learning curve” did you deal with after putting the unit in your practice?
Dr. Hsu: It was very easy to use. Honestly, it was very similar to using our digital pan. With the easy-to-use touchscreen, there really wasn’t much of a learning curve at all. Several LED Dental trainers came into our office to help us initially, and my team and I caught on very quickly.
DPR: What would you tell your colleagues about this product?
Dr. Hsu: So many people try to find the ROI in the unit, but you need to look at the services and peace of mind you will be providing for your patients because of it. In comparison to the other CBCT units I looked at, I feel like I got a lot of “bang for my buck” by purchasing the RAYSCAN α.

We also talked to Teresa Munoz, RDA, about the product.DPR: What comments have you heard from patients about the RAYSCAN α?
Munoz: A lot of them have mentioned how stylish and clean it looks. They’ve also mentioned it’s much quieter than our previous unit.
DPR: Have any patients asked about radiation from the unit?
Munoz: Very few have, but it’s nice to be able to tell them that there is very, very little radiation coming from a scan. We’ve noticed quite a drop in radiation when we compare this and our past unit with a dosimeter.
DPR: What kind of a learning curve was there for you with this product?
Munoz: At first, it was a little intimidating. New technology usually is. But once we sat down with the trainers, we learned how easy it was to use. We did a few test scans on each other, and it was very easy to grasp.
DPR: What would you tell your fellow assistants about the product?
Munoz: Don’t be scared or intimidated by the technology. It’s very easy to use and understand.
