To learn more about how DEXIS is changing the caries detection landscape with CariVu, DPR sat down with DEXIS Product Manager Adam Palermo to learn more about the innovative device.
DPR: With all the flurry of activity surrounding it, I don’t think I even need to ask “What’s hot?” for DEXIS. It’s CariVu™, right?
Adam
: Yes, CariVu! We have experienced an overwhelmingly positive response and acceptance of this amazing device.
DPR: Why do you think that CariVu is setting the dental world on fire?
Adam
: It’s a whole new world in caries detection-it has been reinvented. Not only have we moved beyond fluorescence with a better technology, we’ve made the unit easy to use and fully integrated with one of the world’s best imaging software programs, DEXIS. From our feedback of owners using CariVu, it’s the “objective vs. subjective” concept that hits home with so many clinicians.
DPR: What do you mean by “objective vs. subjective”?
Adam
: You can actually see the lesion in the image- it’s objective, rather than being presented with colors and numbers as with the fluorescence-based detectors. So, interpreting what you see takes less effort. Think of it this way: It’s like the hand-held metal detectors at the airport. When the beeper is set off, there’s no way of telling what it’s detecting. Further investigation has to proceed. With CariVu image, the size and shape of the lesion in the image corresponds very well to the actual lesion. I think given the choice, most dentists would rather see the lesion, and be able to show an image of the lesion to their patients.
DPR: What would you like our readers to know about CariVu vs. x-rays?
Adam
: It’s not one or the other. CariVu is a great adjunct to radiography. It helps to fill in the gaps. It is designed to locate caries where X-rays may be limited, such as occlusal decay. It also has been shown to spot caries sooner than with X-rays in many cases*. And of course, there are the patients who do not want X-rays for a variety of reasons. For clinicians, CariVu turns these limitations into diagnosis opportunity.
FEATURED PRODUCTS
DEXIS CariVu is a portable caries detection device that uses patented transillumination technology to support the identification of occlusal, interproximal and recurrent carious lesions and cracks.
CariVu hugs the tooth and bathes it in safe, near-infrared light. On the resulting images, enamel appears transparent while lesions appear as dark areas. This allows the clinician to see through the tooth, exposing its structure and the actual shape and size of any carious lesions with very high accuracy.
DEXIS offers digital imaging solutions with the best and most consistent image quality, the most comfortable sensor and the fastest workflow*. The award-winning DEXIS® Platinum Sensor incorporates PureImage™ technology, TrueComfort™ sensor design and direct USB connectivity for a positive radiographic experience. DEXIS Imaging Suite software functions as an imaging hub and seamlessly integrates with practice management programs, digital pans, intraoral cameras and select 3D scanners.
