A: I think most people who have embraced digital technology agree that 3D printing, an additive technology, is where manufacturing is headed in just about all manufacturing-based businesses. At this point in its evolution, 3D printing technology gives dentistry the ability to print very detailed and dimensionally accurate burnout patterns for pressing ceramics and casting. There are three or four different methods of building dental patterns. 

 has done its research and determined that SLA (stereolithography) is an excellent way to accomplish that quickly and consistently. In addition to pattern printing, we have made a decision to go with 3D Systems model printers, so we can help our customers bridge the digital gap from scanned impression to final restoration.

Q: In what ways is 3D Printing advantageous to a lab?

A: Though experienced waxers may produce individual wax patterns faster than a printer can, the printer offers several advantages. First, there are economies of scale. A printer can print many patterns simultaneously. That varies by the size of the print platform. Second, printers eliminate the labor of waxing each individual unit by hand. Waxing technicians can be performing other tasks while the waxing is being done. Not only does that save on the cost of labor, it eliminates the problems sometimes associated with handmade patterns. Thin areas can be prevented, complex occlusal schemes can be easily replicated, and bridge connectors are consistently created the proper size. The final product is not only dimensionally accurate and detail-rich, but due to the number of accurate patterns it produces at once, it provides a higher productivity and profit-level for the business.

Q: Is the printing learning curve a challenging one?

A: That depends on the operator’s level of experience and comfort with all things digital. There are many printers and many CAD and CAM software programs available, each with its own learning curve. Some certainly are more challenging than others, but lately there has been more attention paid to ease-of-use. A good example of this is the new 

 which is sold by Whip Mix. It is getting a lot of attention by labs because of its very small, bench-top size, mainly. But there is a lot more to it than that.

The CAM software is built into the printer and the lab can use it with an existing network through a LAN port or directly with a computer using a USB connection. It is really simple to set up. After you receive an .stl file from a scanner, design the patterns and send it to the printer software, it’s ready to print. The ProJet 1200 prints up to about 12 patterns at a time, depending on their sizes. It takes approximately an hour. The best part is that the printer itself costs only $4,900. That’s less than a porcelain furnace. Labs love that it is so affordable. Also, larger labs may decide to have several units so there’s redundancy. If something happens to a unit, there are always others to use instead. That saves on time, money and worry.

A: In a word, yes. There is no question that resin materials have their own burnout requirements to ensure a complete and smooth surface result whether you are pressing or casting. One Shot has the potential to increase the laboratory’s productivity exponentially by expediting the initial build-up process from hours to just minutes, all while producing a beautiful and natural looking restoration. Now available in Press Pellets, One Shot has made it even easier to save. One Shot can be used to create all-ceramic veneers, inlays and onlays.

This universal investment is formulated for use with both press ceramics and casting alloys using the ringless investment method. The investment features a six-minute working time and a 20-minute quick burnout at a temperature of 1,000?C (1,832?F) or less without a ring. When used with press ceramics, easy removal of the mold reduces the risk of ceramic chipping and the reduced stress also minimizes ceramic cracking. The investment powder comes in 100 gram foil packet in boxes of either 30 or 100 packets. The liquid comes in plastic bottles of 300mL or two liters.

Veracia is a new semi-anatomical esthetic denture tooth composed of microfilled hybrid composite reinforced with layers of glass. The teeth are specifically designed to self-articulate during occlusion through strategically placed fissures and grinding facets. The system also includes the patented “Q3 Pack,” which can set up four individual posterior teeth at once. Accordingly, a simple and unmistakable alignment is achieved reducing setup time, improving patient comfort, and all but eliminating grinding corrections by the dentist.

Ceramage is a zirconium silicate micro ceramic that creates indirect restorations that exhibit virtually the same light transmission as natural teeth, maintaining a remarkable translucency. Ceramage bonds to a variety of substructures including non-precious and high noble alloys. Full gum colors are the ideal material to restore complete gingival anatomy. This gingival modification technique is especially useful on implant cases and previously fixed porcelain restorations. Ceramage bleach shades fulfill the desire of today’s patient for a young, healthy, white smile.

Q: Straumann talks a lot about “original on original.” What does that mean, and why does that matter?

A: Original connection is a patented connection that cannot be replicated by third-party parts. Many surgeons insist on original parts regardless of the manufacturer of the implant. The warranty and piece of mind offered by using OEM parts is important to them in regards to patient satisfaction and reputation. 

, abutments and crowns are manufactured to precise specifications to provide the best possible fit. This can lessen the chance of abutment or screw failure that is sometimes the consequence of using non-original components.   
	
	

Q: What products has Straumann recently introduced into the market that you feel can really help labs?

 (Ti base), SRA (screw-retained abutments) and new screw-retained bar options allow laboratories to offer popular restorative options with original Straumann connections. Straumann’s edentulous solutions will continue to be improved in the coming months with additions to both the lab and dentist portfolio. These solutions will help labs meet the demands of Straumann surgeons that need a complete solution to meet the growing number of edentulous patients seeking implant therapy as a treatment solution versus conventional dentures.   
	
	

 workflow make it easier than ever for labs to ensure quality in their implant cases?

A: With the integration of intraoral scanning, coDiagnostiX treatment planning software from Dental Wings and Straumann CARES® CAD/CAM software, laboratories are able to offer pre-operative provisionals prior to surgery. This workflow assists with tissue management and a temporary provisional from the time of surgery. This means the patient has a smile from the day of surgery to the delivery of the final prosthesis.

Q: What opportunities and challenges do labs need to know about implant technology as they look at the rest of 2014 and into 2015?

A: To stay current, laboratories must continuously monitor new introductions in both implant types and their new restorative options. New implant types may lead to an increase in the patient pool for implant treatment. Labs that follow the trends and educate themselves on the new options will position themselves to be ready to restore cases on these new implants. Other trends, including the growth of intraoral scanning technology, impression scanning, 3D printing and the availability of outsourcing services, need to be followed closely.

Staying current with those technologies and services combined with the new offerings from the implant manufactures will ensure the lab remains relevant and competitive in the marketplace. Labs should partner with their local implant reps to stay on top of the new technology in order to make the connection to surgeons that are early adopters of the new technology.
	
	

Q: What is Straumann doing to ensure that labs meet those opportunities?

A: Straumann encourages partnerships between dentists, labs and surgeons. Labs are being encouraged to participate in SPEAR and ITI study clubs that give them access to surgeons that place implants and are looking for restorative partnerships with local labs. Straumann dental and laboratory representatives are ready to help make these connections and provide business growth opportunities to our laboratory partners.

Q:  CAP is known for being very forward-thinking and innovative. What have you already developed in 2014, and what can we expect in the year to come?

We are launching a new software application called 

 that is built to optimize internal operations. We all understand CAD/CAM automates laboratories but CAPZilla automates everything. This saves time, reduces error and improves the workflow.
	We have also launched a new multilayered full contour zirconia disk called CAP Multi FZ, which provides a more life-like, easy-to-use full contour zirconia material. This year we will launch a super high translucent zirconia disc for single units and some 3-unit bridges. It’s an exciting time at CAP.

Q:  Where do you see room for improvement in how labs embrace technological innovations and how is CAP helping?

 Embracing new technology requires a partner that will provide support, guaranteeing success. Many labs have embraced systems that are restrictive and come with poor support, which is not in their best interest. CAP offers an automation consultation program that includes an on-site facilities audit, an in-depth operational optimization assessment and subsequent improvement plan from our R&D team.

Q:  How does CAP make it possible for all labs to take the digital leap?

CAP provides an easy and low-risk path for labs to take the digital leap. For labs that don’t have any technology, they can simply send models to CAP’s milling center where we take care of the entire digital process.  

As the lab builds up their market for digital materials, they may be interested in purchasing a scanner or fabrication equipment, so they can control the design process, reduce turn-around time and reduce their costs. We want to be there for our customers every step of the way.

Q:  Rob, how do you come up with your ideas for improving the workflow and ROI for labs? How does your R&D department operate, and what do they provide CAP?

By running our own milling center we learn what works and pass that knowledge on to our customers. We have an R&D team with a combined 50 years experience in software development, Six Sigma, lean manufacturing and mechanical engineering who thrive on making processes better, faster and more efficient.

The R&D team works in our milling center and observes hundreds of cases being fabricated every day, giving them countless opportunities to learn how to make things better.
