Hi, I'm Dan, CEO and cofounder of Laura Health. We are proud to have just presented at the Dental Products Report showcase for new innovations in dentistry. It was a great time to engage with dentists, clinicians, hygienists, and really the community as a whole. It's our second time at Greater New York, and it's really exciting to be here. So right now the standard of healthcare is usually blood-based testing. We want to make the first wearable sensing platform for continuous data with saliva as opposed to blood. So how do we do that? Hi, I'm Tony Urbanek. I'm a double degree oral and maxillofacial surgeon from Nashville, Tennessee. I actually make a very profound statement, I figured out how to treat temporomandibular joint problems successfully. I did research 12 years ago, beginning 12 years ago, after deciding surgery was not the answer. 12 years ago, I started interviewing my patients, and they told me where to look, and what to do. I did that, and amazingly, it turned out very successful.

We now have a device and protocol. It's a device and protocol that when used correctly, solves the temporomandibular joint conundrum. The conundrum is patients who forever years and years have headache, earache, jaw pain, neck pain that have just been misdiagnosed. And when it's been misdiagnosed, it is not been treated correctly. Available in two models. The Photon EXE offers an 810 nanometer wavelength and 3W of power, while the Photon EXE Plus operates at a 980 nanometer wavelength and offers 10W of power. Both models accommodate continuous and pulsed modes and support low level laser therapy for pain reduction and laser bleaching with additional attachments.

Finally, Carestream Dental recently announced the expansion of its partnership with Swissmeda with the debut of Swissmeda Cloud Imaging for Carestream Dental imaging solutions. This subscription service securely stores CBCT scans and 2D x-rays in the cloud, providing efficient access for dental professionals. Seamlessly integrating with Carestream Dental's existing software, this solution converts existing Carestream Dental imaging systems such as the CS 9600, or the CS 8200 3D systems into cloud connected devices. Automatic image upload and user friendly browser based viewing facilitate convenient access from anywhere. Flexible partial dentures are a versatile and affordable option for tooth replacement. Like all the restorative options, they have their pros and cons. We look at both and what you should consider regarding case selection.

Dental implants are an excellent restorative option for patients with missing teeth. However, not every patient can tolerate or afford dental implants. Therefore, every dental practice must have other, more affordable alternatives to restore missing teeth.

Partial dentures are an affordable way to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Traditionally, these are made with a plastic or metal base with clasps that attach to surrounding teeth to hold the replacement tooth in place.

By contrast, flexible partial dentures have a non-rigid base. Many patients find them more comfortable to wear than a traditional partial denture.

 Made of thin thermoplastic, such as nylon or a vinyl composite, flexible partials bend to fit the patients' oral cavity. Flexible dentures are an excellent option for patients that have:

Tilted teeth, making it challenging to insert rigid dentures

Irregular bone ridges that cannot be corrected

The Materials Used for Flexible Partial Dentures

Many flexible partial dentures, including the early ones from the 1950s, were made of nylon-based materials, like Valplast. A couple of decades later, flexible partial dentures were made from a range of materials, including:

Acrylics (polymethylmethacrylate – PMMA)

Today's denture materials have continued to evolve. There are super flexible crystalline nylons and polyolefins. Choosing the material depends on the patient's needs. For example, crystalline nylon might be the better choice for patients with allergies.

These materials have many patient benefits. They are biocompatible and don't have BPAs. They are also stain and odor-resistant. Plus, they are comfortable to wear and eat with because the bases are thin, much thinner than traditional dentures. The flexibility means they are also less likely to irritate the oral cavity.

Partial dentures are great for patients with three or more missing teeth next to each other. They can also be helpful after extractions from trauma or disease, holding the surrounding teeth in place until the patient gets a more permanent option.

Flexible dentures retain better (no adhesive necessary) and are more difficult to break than traditional partials. Many think they are more comfortable than conventional partial dentures, too. Also, they are affordable, ranging from $700 to $3000, depending upon the case, and some insurance policies cover them up to 50 percent.

In addition, flexible partial dentures are more straightforward to custom design. The whole process requires less time for custom design than other restorative options and is far less invasive than dental implants. Moreover, flexible partials tend to fit appropriately with less fuss than other modalities.

While partial dentures are esthetic and affordable and help patients eat, smile, and talk, patients cannot always wear them. Also, flexible partial dentures need maintenance more than other permanent solutions. Patients often need replacements at five years, although some estimates put that at 8 years.

 Plus, the color can degrade as the patient wears them. Additionally, they are more expensive than traditional partial dentures, which might be a stumbling block for some patients.

Some patients want a low-maintenance and natural-feeling solution for their missing teeth. In those cases, flexible partial dentures, with their less-than-permanent feel, will not deliver the proper patient experience. Also, even though they don't break the same way traditional partials do, flexible partials are challenging to fix and often require a complete replacement if something breaks.

Sometimes, flexible partials aren't compatible with the case. When a patient is missing several teeth or has fused teeth, flexible partial dentures might not have enough support to provide an adequate replacement.

Choosing the Right Flexible Partial Denture Candidates

Case selection has much to do with a partial denture's success. If dental implants are off the table for treating the patient's edentulism, then consider the following:

Are the conditions of the remaining teeth, gums, and oral tissue in good enough health for the patient to wear a partial denture?

Is there enough stability and support from the surrounding dentition for the patient to wear a partial?

Will the location and the number of missing teeth pose a problem for wearing a partial?

What do you see for the patient's supporting teeth in the future, meaning potential decay or extraction?

What coverage can the patient expect from their insurance plan?7

Of course, clinicians should also include the patient's concerns in the case selection. When deciding whether a flexible partial denture is suitable for your patient, consider the following three patient preferences:

 Discover your patient's understanding of the materials used, how easy they are to maintain, and their goals for the prosthesis. You might uncover a misunderstanding that needs clarification or a better option that meets the patient's desired experience.

Maybe the patient wants a better smile. Perhaps they are concerned with how the replacement will work and the comfort level of wearing it. Whatever they want from the appliance, ensure you know what that is before proceeding with any restorative solution.

 Even patients with insurance coverage might not have the finances to cover their out-of-pocket treatment expenses. It can be helpful to know those limitations before presenting options patients want but can't afford.

Also, flexible partial dentures have some preferences, too. For example, these replacement teeth are excellent for patients who have gum recession, titled teeth, irregular bony structures in the oral cavity, or a cleft palate. Flexible partials are also ideal for patients with acrylic or metal allergies. In addition, these prosthetics are suitable for patients new to replacement teeth or those likely to break their dentures.

What You Cannot Forget to Discuss With Patient Who Gets Flexible Partial Dentures

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene with a flexible partial denture is essential. Plaque can build up around it without proper cleaning and contribute to gum disease. Therefore, clinicians should explain how to clean the denture properly, as well as how to clean the remaining natural teeth and gums. Tell them what foods they should avoid in the first two weeks and foods that always require extra caution when eating, like chewy, sticky foods or foods that are hard to bite, like an apple. Also, dental professionals should ensure patients understand they cannot wear the dentures around the clock and that the patient should soak them in water or denture solution when not wearing them.

In addition to hygiene concerns, clinicians should explain when they should return to the practice for further help with their flexible partial dentures. Give patients scenarios of regular side effects of wearing a new type of denture that needs time to get used to and what is a fit or function concern that needs professional help. For example, some symptoms that indicate a patient needs to return are inflamed gums, the persistent appearance of blisters or sores, and frequent cuts in the oral tissue. The patient should also come in if they are experiencing headaches or ear pain.

Flexible partial dentures are not for everyone, but they are an excellent and affordable solutions for many edentulous cases. These prosthetics have their pros and cons, but as the materials evolve and improve, so too might the advantages and drawbacks. By having a discussion with your patients and ensuring that everyone understands what the benefits and challenges are, as well as the expectations for the outcome, flexible partial dentures can deliver excellent patient outcomes.

All restorative options have pros and cons. When reviewing the flexible partial denture for tooth replacement, we look at some key points to consider regarding case selection.

Flexible Partial Dentures: The Pros and Cons to Consider

Forest Rain Marcia is brand manager for Admetec of Haifa, Israel, which designs, develops, and manufactures custom-designed magnifying loupes and LED headlights for dentists, surgeons, veterinarians, and others for whom precision vision is crucial. 

Nancy Adair, a dental hygienist based in Kelowna, British Columbia, recently reached a milestone attained by few in her profession: 40 years on the job—one that blossomed into a career that expands the boundaries of her role and instructs others to do the same.

Adair describes herself as a “working-class hygienist.” Growing up in small-town Ontario, she was blessed with keen hand-eye coordination and an observant mother, who suggested to her teenage daughter that dexterity and dentistry went hand in hand—or rather, hand in mouth.

Fast-forward 4-plus decades and, working class or not, other prefixes could aptly precede “hygienist” when defining Adair’s career. “Über-” would work; perhaps “super-” might fit best. Adair’s passion to optimize her value to dentists and patients alike is evident. So is her determination to pay it forward to the next generation.

For the past 13 years, Adair has done far more than ably assist myriad general dentists and periodontists. She has shaped the professional perspectives and skill sets of hundreds of fellow hygienists. Adair is the founder and president of 

, a Program Approval for Continuing Education–approved provider whose intensive, immersive skills teach those assisting dentists to be far more than teeth cleaners.

From 8-hour weekend workshops to 52-hour multiweekend courses, the organization’s goal is to produce next-level hygienists trained and motivated to serve as vigilant monitors in an ever-evolving dentistry landscape, one in which modern hygienists must detect issues such as oral systemic correlation, ailing or failing dental implants, and periodontal conditions. Course attendees leave Adair’s sessions with a deeper understanding of their role as true gatekeepers of patients’ health—a notion reinforced by the growing understanding of oral hygiene’s link to overall physical well-being.

But lately, they also leave with a piece of plain advice.

“Invest in yourself, your time, and your equipment,” Adair insists. “You’ll enrich your skill set, enhance your practice’s revenue potential, and extend your career. Among other necessities, seeing with detailed clarity is a must, and loupes and lights are now a mainstay.”

Given Adair’s prolific professional successes, one would assume such wisdom flows from decades of leaning on the proper tools for her precision-centric trade. But alas, sometimes even peak performers come into full bloom a bit late.

“Two years,” Adair shares, indicating a time frame spanning just 5% of her hygienist career. “I’ve been using Ergo loupes for just 2 years.”

“COVID changed everything for me,” she continues. “Research showed hygienists were among the highest risk for work-related coronavirus transmission. So part of my motivation was keeping my distance while maintaining my professional precision.”

In 2021, Adair purchased a set of Admetec Ergo loupes from North American supplier Andau Medical. Customized to each individual wearer through a multifactor process, Admetec’s Ergo series of deflection loupes combine precision vision and exceedingly light weight, helping health care practitioners work comfortably and effectively for extended periods of time.

The through-the-lens ergonomic loupes provide a real declination angle of up to 60°, enabling an upright working position that substantially reduces stress on the head, neck, back, and shoulders. This is especially important considering, per an extensive 

2016 report published by the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association,

 anywhere from 60% to 96% of hygienists suffer work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

When she adopted Admetec’s Ergo loupes, Adair was aware of yet blissfully unaffected by these harrowing health statistics. But what she soon learned intimately was that the loupes allowed a healthier working distance while allowing her to see better—much better.

“In our field, fractions of a millimeter count,” she attests. “We’re tasked with identifying warning signs that can be as tiny as a pinhole—and explore those issues with razor-sharp instruments.” The 3X magnification of her new loupes afforded her a confidence boost when, for example, root planing a 10-to-12-mm gum pocket, examining a fracture line in a restoration, or detecting an open margin on a crown.

Adair also deals with more than her fair share of crisis-level periodontal patients. Many have advanced gum disease that is long ignored and suddenly urgent. With these patients, precision vision is just as important as it is for identifying early-stage, still-developing dental issues such as small abscesses and budding infections.

Adair also replaced her existing headlight, which she found cumbersome, with the Admetec Butterfly—a lightweight, wireless headlight that affixes to the Ergo loupe’s bridge. She found that the logistical ease and complementary illumination further enhanced her precision and productivity.

“My Ergo loupes and Butterfly lights enable greater precision than I ever anticipated,” Adair says. “It’s to a point where I’m sometimes noticing an issue that the dentist right next to me isn’t, which heightens my value as a hygienist.” Here, she reinforces that a problem that isn’t perceived can’t be corrected—and can’t produce long-term customer satisfaction or short-term revenue goals.

But perhaps the most instantly noticeable difference in Adair’s work comes from her hands-on workshops. As she works on patients, her fellow hygienists are frequently enticed by the Butterfly headlight which, Adair jokes, “lights the mouth up like a football stadium.”

Her operatory position, made possible by the Ergo loupes, also piques her pupils’ interest. While they hunch, stretch, and strain to gain the best vantage point, Adair sits in the upright, ergonomic, healthy posture afforded by her Ergo loupes. Upon witnessing Adair deftly perform any number of complicated oral procedures with her back straight and head proudly raised, many agnostic students become fervert ergonomic converts.

In doing so, Adair is elevating far more than her head—she’s elevating her oft-denigrated profession.

“We are not just hygienists,” Adair insists. “This is not an entry-level job. It’s a career—and demands all the progress, diligence, and commitment to perpetual learning that a career requires. We play a key role in our patients’ oral and overall health, and it’s on us to perform those duties as precisely and proficiently as possible.”

Users of Clinux CAD will now find a fully functioning semi-automatic margin finder when doing their next case. This feature allows a clinician to quickly complete the margin process, tracing the cursor and finding the shortest distance along an edge.


With this option, access and use of Clinux CAD is allowed, with users paying only when a design is exported. This newly available license is in addition to monthly, annual, or a 5-year license option, where all exports are unlimited, and are purchased in blocks of credits with the cost based on the volume of credits purchased, the company states.

“The new indications open up a world of possibilities for dentists wishing to make their own CAD designs,” states Roddy MacLeod, Clinux Inc. CEO, in a press release. “Multiple-unit, simultaneous designing unlocks profitable workflows for the dentist, whether restoring a quadrant in 1 visit or a patient’s new smile.”

Clinux says the clinical convenience of the innovations allows users to mix and match the optimal design method on a tooth-by-tooth basis. “As an example, a user may use Database design when there is no useful pre-existing occlusion or Copy design, which is ideal for reproducing wax-ups in the anterior. In any scenario, we have worked to ensure the maximum clinical outcome through guided and intuitive workflows,” MacLeod adds in the press release.

Clinux CAD is the first ever Cloud-based CAD for dentists featuring guided workflows. Founded in 2020, the open system was developed by clinical experts, and allows dentists to quickly fabricate inlays, onlays, crowns, crownlays, and night guards/splints within the browser. Clinux imports scans from all IOS types and allows export of designs to dentistry’s most popular mills and 3D printers with one click, the company states.

Cloud-based CAD software now provides new possibilities for dentists including margin tool function, new inlay/onlay indications, and a pay-per export license option.
