Why use DENTSPLY Caulk's TPH Spectra composite?

He has authored and co-authored several articles on cosmetic and esthetic topics and has presented numerous lectures and hands-on seminars nationally and internationally for dental organizations, universities and study clubs.   

In this installment of “I Use That,” Dr. Lambert, who serves as the team dentist for the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA, discusses his thoughts on DENTSPLY Caulk’s TPH Spectra Universal Composite.

How did you first learn of TPH Spectra composite and/or why did you give the product a try in your practice?  

I first learned of TPH Spectra composite during a KOL meeting with DENTSPLY.  TPH3 had been a very solid performer for them, and they were quite keen on the new version of the TPH product. I had not been a TPH3 user previously (I used EsthetX HD and many other manufacturers’ composites), but during the hands-on use of the TPH Spectra composite, I could tell this was something fresh and a composite I wanted to work with more.

 What do you like best about the material?  

TPH Spectra composite has a few unique qualities going for it:

1.  To my knowledge, it is the first composite to offer two specific handling consistencies - low viscosity (LV) and high viscosity (HV). This was based on survey work DENTSPLY completed to determine what kind of handling consistency the dentist liked - smooth and creamy or more of a denser, wax-like feel. Interestingly enough, if I recall, the results showed about a 50/50 split among practitioners. So, in response to the results, they went ahead with two handling formulas. Great idea!

2.  It is a true universal composite - able to be utilized in both the
anterior and posterior with high quality results.  The physical properties, handling characteristics and polishability are the key components. Dentists are looking to simplify their inventory of materials and lower their overhead ... the ability to have a composite like TPH Spectra composite in their practices helps them to accomplish these goals. 

3.  Another great quality about TPH Spectra composite is it has a simplified shading system. DENTSPLY has streamlined the shading process by providing seven of the most essential tooth shades that cover the entire VITA Classic range. This translates into saving time at the chair selecting shades and ultimately dollars in inventory.

Tell us a little about the results you’ve experienced?

Our results have been outstanding with the TPH Spectra composite. The optical properties and chameleon effect of the material make it a predictable and fun composite to use in the anterior and posterior when combined with Caulk’s SureFil SDR flow in a bulk or semi-bulk fill manner, creating a winning combination.

What would you say to a colleague thinking about giving the product a try?  

I would encourage any dentist who wishes to experience a composite that meets all of the criteria we would like in a direct resin-universal application throughout the mouth, great physical properties, easy polishing, maintenance over time, ability to interface with contemporary bonding agents and low stress/low strain flowable resins and good radiopacity, all while exceeding our demands or expectations with two options for handling consistencies and offering a uniquely simplified shading system-to try TPH Spectra composite and be ready to be pleasantly surprised!
