A Q&A with NSK Dental North America Marketing Manager Rob Gochoel on the S-Max pico.
Q: What is the most frequent question or concern you hear from dental professionals about this category?
A: Dental professionals want power and reliability. Since a handpiece is a tool that dentists, use each and every day they practice, they want to know the product that they choose will run reliably helping to increase their productivity and profit.
Q: How does your company and your product specifically, seek to answer that question or meet that need?
A: NSK manufactures nearly 90% of all of its handpiece components in-house. For our air driven handpieces, 100% of components are manufactured by NSK! This is important because the company can test how all components work together and simulate clinical situations where handpieces are used. By manufacturing all of these components in-house, NSK can confidently tell its customers that its products are going to be reliable and perform as we expect them to. In addition, if a problem were ever discovered, NSK will be able to pinpoint the cause much faster and determine a solution much faster as well, which will, in turn, save customers time and money!
Q: What about this product category do you think helps the dentist practice better clinical dentistry?
A: The handpiece category has undergone significant improvements in the design and manufacture of products over the past decade, but many dentists don’t realize it. Since the product life cycle for a typical handpiece is 6 to 8 years or even longer in some cases. So, many dentists will go ahead and order the same product that they are replacing, even though a more powerful, easier-to-use and faster option may be available. These new options can help dentists cut more conservative preparations faster than ever before, which is very beneficial to patients in trying to preserve as much of their existing tooth structure as possible.

Q: How is your company or product leading the way for innovation in this category?
A: NSK is making big strides in reducing the size of the head and neck dimensions of the handpiece to provide better access. In most cases, the handpiece designs are smaller without giving up the power requirement dentists desire. The S-Max pico, which is the world’s smallest air driven handpiece and Ti-Max Z95L and Z85L, which are the world’s smallest electric attachment handpieces are making it easier to cut a more conservative preparation while improving patient comfort at the same time. When a patient doesn’t need to open their mouth as wide and can have less tooth structure removed, it is a win-win situation for both the dentist and the patient!
