Dr. Theodore Croll of Doylestown, Pa., doesn’t hide his enthusiasm about stainless steel crowns and the impact they have made on his patients and his practice.
“It’s a smart product that makes life a lot easier for a dentist,” Dr. Croll said. “With 3M ESPE offering seven different sizes, these crowns are a tremendous way for dentists to replace what has been lost to caries. You pick the size, do a little trimming if necessary, and crimp the last half a millimeter on the margin. That’s it.”

Dr. Croll believes the only potential drawback to the crown is the silver color, which parents can often mistake for something containing mercury or amalgam. That, however, is an easy fix with a proper and quick explanation to a parent.
“The beauty of these crowns is that the pediatric patients loves the look and the dentist and parents love the benefits,” Dr. Croll said. “It’s unheard of now for a child to wear through these crowns, even if he or she is the most aggressive grinder. Plus, every little boy loves showing off his superhero tooth and every little girl loves showing off her shiny princess tooth.”
