The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) adopted Ultradent’s notched-edge shear bond strength testing method as a new standard used to determine the adhesive bond strength between direct dental restorative materials and tooth structure.
The method, which Ultradent created, refined and has taught for a number of years, was chosen after the ISO conducted a rigorous study involving more than 20 independent organizations. ISO Standard 29022 is mainly intended for adhesives and includes substrate selection, storage and handling of tooth structure, as well as the procedure for testing. The testing’s key element is a notched-edge crosshead employed to shear a bonded specimen using an even distribution of force. Final results are reportedly more accurate with a notched contact due to how closely it approximates adhesive shear strength rather than peel strength.
