A look at the 6 new software applications that drew the most attention from the Dental Products Report® audience throughout the past year.
Technological advances areconstantly innovating and automating the way clinicians treat patients, how dental practices operate, and how they work and communicate with dental labs. These 6 software products—there was a tie for the fifth slot—released in the past year offer breakthroughs in patient engagement, treatment planning, digital design, imaging, diagnosis, and artificial intelligence automation.

Bellus3D Dental Pro
Bellus3D Dental Pro is a powerful and easy-to-use 3D face scanning solution, enabling dentists to incorporate 3D facial scans into treatment planning. Extraoral images can be captured in as little as 10 seconds and then easily aligned with digital impressions and 3D CBCT images. This allows the application to quickly and easily create before and after simulations for engaging patient presentations. Built-in smile design and facebow guide planes make for easy placement of face scans into virtual articulators within 3Shape Dental System, exocad, and others.
A next-generation patient engagement platform, Curve GRO is designed to provide a solution to patient communication and records within a single database. Not only does this provide a more convenient workflow, but it also is said to reduce costs and improve the patient experience. It automatically manages patient reminder campaigns and updates the schedule once a patient confirms their appointment. When used with a rules-based campaign, its Smart Action List function automates customizable campaigns. Curve GRO also offers 2-way conversational texting.
Scan to Model is a tool for Formlabs’ PreForm software that serves as an entry for dental professionals without digital design software experience. The new feature is designed to convert intraoral scans into 3D printable models. Clinicians can create diagnostic, formed appliance, and fit check models by scanning the patient’s teeth with a 3D intraoral scanner, uploading the model to PreForm’s Scan to Model tool, and then printing with a Formlabs 3D printer. It’s said to reduce turnaround time and the number of software programs required to produce models.
This software suite allows practices to simplify the storage and management of patient scans and images. It can be utilized on both Windows and Mac systems. Linked with the most popular and used practice management systems, DTX Studio Clinic can be integrated across the practice with ease. This can reduce the amount of software in the practice, leading to a more efficient workflow. It has a variety of smart features that allow clinicians to expand and compare images using advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, data sets, and proprietary voxel-based algorithms, and can be used for a multitude of chairside procedures.
Overjet’s Dental Assist™ applies artificial intelligence (AI) in real time to aid dentists and hygienists. It supports dental professionals in measuring mesial and distal bone levels in bitewing and periapical radiographs for the diagnosis and treatment planning of periodontal disease. In clinical performance testing, it demonstrated automated measurement capabilities comparable to those of a team of highly skilled dentists.
Automate is said to be the first dental design platform powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Developed for dental labs and hosted on the 3Shape website, Automate allows dental technicians to set up an unlimited number of design orders with customizable instructions and upload scans to the design service. Its AI technology is said to return design proposals in as little as 5 minutes. Labs will pay only for what is approved and downloaded. Its open platform allows technicians using 3Shape Dental System, exocad, or other select scanners to send files to the platform.
