We talked with the experts at Hayes Handpiece Company about what it takes to get the most out of your dental handpieces. Here are five mistakes you might not realize you’re making.

1. It’s not maintained properlyWe cannot emphasize enough the importance of proper maintenance. Following the basic recommendations can help prevent problems that make it necessary to send handpieces out for repairs. Take maintenance of this crucial investment seriously, and be sure to review proper maintenance with new team members.

2. It has improper air pressure

We’ve serviced handpieces for almost 25 years and know proper air pressure is one of the most overlooked aspects of handpiece operation.

Recommended air pressures vary by model. Excessive air pressure causes damage to internal components, especially bearings, and not enough pressure means the handpiece won’t provide sufficient power, affecting overall torque. Check air pressure regularly, at the handpiece end of the hose, for optimum accuracy.

3. You don’t have enough

If you are rushing handpieces out of the autoclave before they’ve had a chance to dry or cool down, or struggle to get through the day when one is out for repair, you don’t have enough handpieces. Have 3 highspeeds and one lowspeed motor with 2 to 3 angles, nosecones, and heads in each operatory.

4. You’re using the wrong tool

For highspeed procedures, understanding the differences in handpiece head size is crucial. Large head handpieces have more torque while small head handpieces provide better access.

5. You overlook new technology

While some handpieces can last through your career if properly maintained and repaired, consider new options that could improve your dentistry. Know what’s available and find the best fit for you.
