The top new dental laboratory material products of 2020 as chosen by the Dental Lab Products® editorial team.
Finding the best way to replicate teeth and gums is a delicate balance of multiple factors that must add up to produce a restoration that looks and functions like the anatomy it’s replacing while also providing durability. Knowing what will be the best material for the case at hand is an important skill for a technician to learn, and with so many new material choices available all the time, keeping track of all the options is a never-ending task. Material choices are critical whether the restoration is being fabricated with analog techniques, or milling from a puck, or 3D printed out of a vat of resin. Here are 5 of the most exciting new material options from the past year.
3D PRINTING RESIN
VarseoSmile Crownplus
The first tooth-colored, ceramic-filled hybrid material designed for fabrication of 3D printed permanent crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers, VarseoSmile Crownplus is available in 7 VITA classical shades. The material offers high dimensional stability and the ability to be customized with composite stains after curing to provide the form and function required of a dental restoration. The material is compatible with the Varseo XS, a DLP printer said to provide accuracy and speed. The printer is capable of printing at a speed of up to 30 mm per hour and features an easily replaceable resin tank.
MILLABLE MATERIAL
Ivotion
Ivotion is a monolithic, single-disc milling solution for advanced digital denture workflows. Combining high-quality tooth and denture base materials in a single bi-color disc, Ivotion provides digital laboratories with an efficient, predictable, monolithic milling solution. It features Shell Geometry, a data-based 3D tooth and dental arch structure suitable for the digital fabrication of removable upper and lower dentures. Integrated exclusively into 3Shape Dental System 2020 CAD software, the digital denture system allows patient-specific customization with the Ivotion tooth library and the coordinated Shell Geometry.
3D PRINTING RESIN
KeySplint Soft™
Designed for production of 3D printed nightguards and splints, KeySplint Soft resin is now available in the United States. Without being brittle, the 3D printing material is tough and durable, like a hard splint to withstand the forces of bruxism, yet flexible for patient comfort. Abrasion and fracture resistant, it is made in the United States, has 3 years of guaranteed shelf life, and is described as a highly efficient and profitable way to make splints and nightguards. There are two shades available—an esthetic clear version as well as an open-source version with a slight violet tint.
Polishing Compound
Speed Polish®
Speed Polish is a polishing compound crafted from a diamond/alumina base specially developed for polishing zirconium and lithium disilicate restorations. It is designed to polish in seconds and matches the esthetics of enamel. The compound reduces wear on opposing dentition and is said to rival glazed restorations. Excess polish can be removed with a soft brush, or cloth, or rinsed with water, as Speed Polish is water-soluble. Made of natural ingredients in small batches in-house, Speed Polish is said to feature a perfect balance of abrasion materials delivered in a dust-free binder.
3D PRINTING RESIN
Lucitone Digital Print 3D Denture Resin
Optimized for 3D printing in Carbon M-Series printers, Lucitone Digital Print 3D Denture Resin is the next generation of the high-impact Lucitone denture base material. The resin features Body-Activated Material, a smart polymer technology that provides amplified material properties resisting breakage and preventing propagation of existing cracks or fractures. This is accomplished via a thermally responsive reaction causing a 2-fold increase in the work-of-fracture material property. This added strength is undetectable by the patient.
