The top new dental laboratory technology products of 2020 as chosen by the Dental Lab Products® editorial team.
Many dental labs today look a lot different from what they did a decade ago. Numerous innovations in the equipment and technology powering the production of dental restorations have changed the way many labs work with digital design and machine-driven production replacing analog processes and hand-layered restorations. Most labs have a scanner, many also use at least 1 milling system, and the dental lab industry is among the biggest users of 3D printing technology. Those dental CAD/CAM technologies are the industries present, and here are 5 of the most exciting innovations in lab technology from 2020.
3D SCANNERS
T-Series
The T-Series laboratory scanner lineup—the T710, T510, and T310—is designed to meet the needs of every dental lab. Customizable workflows and an open system make the scanners highly flexible. The Medit T710 is equipped with four 5 MP high-resolution cameras, positioned to ensure there are no blind spots in the data, even after a single scan. Full arches are scanned in only 8 seconds and the wide scan area makes it easy to scan multiple objects at the same time. The Medit T710 offers 4-micron accuracy and can be used to scan all indications, including implant cases, impressions, post and core, and replica dentures.
3D PRINTER
Form 3BL
Designed with a print area of 13.2 × 7.9 × 11.8 in, the Form 3BL prints biocompatible parts with the accuracy needed to produce dental aligners. Capable of fitting approximately 24 arches in a single print run, it is designed to operate continuously with little need for operator interaction. The 3BL employs a Low Force Stereolithography print technology designed to provide optimal surface detail. The technology combines custom optics with a unique resin tank designed to reduce peel forces on the print materials. This allows the 3BL to produce parts with smooth surfaces and smaller support connections, reducing the need for postprint processing.
CAD SOFTWARE
DentalCAD 2.4 Plovdiv
DentalCAD 2.4 Plovdiv features a significantly enhanced FullDenture module for the design of removable single jaw dentures in a guided digital workflow, allowing practically all digital full denture production methods to be mapped. An improved thimble crown design optimizes workflow for creating implantborne thimble bridges without rescanning the substructure. Model Creator now allows adjustment of the offset around the model analogs and includes an extended library for attachments. The PartialCAD module now features extended control and new options to meet fit preferences.
MILLING SYSTEM
Ceramill Matik
Designed to provide dental labs with a single solution for CAM fabrication, materials inventory management, and device cleaning and maintenance, Ceramill Matik is a 5-axis mill suited for use with a wide range of materials and indications. The mill offers a patented carving mode for fast production and both wet and dry machining can be used on a single unit. Software innovations help the mill design the optimal workflow for each case. The system includes an automatic material and tool feed with room for 36 material blanks and 26 tools and can manage inventory both inside and outside the mill.
3D SCANNERS
3Shape E Series Generation Red
Generation Red lab scanners—upgraded versions of the 3Shape E Series scanners—are designed to provide labs with 20% faster scanning performance. Each model is designed to meet different labs’ needs, with the Generation Red E1 capable of scanning a full arch in 32 seconds and a full arch impression in 104 seconds with 10-μm accuracy, and the top-of-the-line Generation Red E4 capable of scanning a full arch in just 9 seconds and a full arch impression in 45 seconds with 4-μm accuracy. The Generation Red scanners are offered at the same price as the original E Series scanners.
