The top new material products of 2022 as chosen by the editors of Dental Lab Products®.
Materials are the building blocks of dental restorations, and their selection varies depending on the restoration type and the processes, techniques, and technologies used to create them. It’s therefore critical for technicians to understand the properties of the various options available to them. Here are the top 10 new materials of 2022.
This ceramic is said to combine efficiency and esthetics with a layer-free progression in shade and translucency. It provides incisal areas with high levels of translucency and cervical areas with optimally coordinated levels of opacity plus 850 MPa of strength. Created from 2 zirconium oxides (4Y-TZP and 5Y-TZP), it is available in a range of 16 A-D and 4 bleach shades and in 3 different thicknesses (14 mm, 16 mm, and 20 mm) with a Ø 98.5 mm diameter. It uses advanced powder conditioning to adjust sintering kinetics and ensure uniform shrinkage across materials.
Grandio blocs are a fire-free Nano-Ceramic hybrid material that are designed to integrate with Planmeca’s PlanMill system. The Grandio blocs eliminate the need for firing, saving time and expense while simplifying optional characterization and intraoral repair. It is 86% filled, allowing for wear resistance and long-term color stability. Its toothlike elasticity and thermal expansion enhance marginal integrity compared with ceramic/zirconia. The blocs offer precision-milled, thin, tapered edges (as low as 0.8 mm for crowns) without the danger of chipping or breakage.
When used with Desktop Health’s Einstein™ series of 3D printers, this next-generation resin is said to be suitable for permanent printable dental restorations. Flexcera Smile Ultra+ uses long-chain chemistry and ceramic-like strength for the printing of same-day crowns, bridges, and veneers as well as for full and partial dentures. It boasts 3 times more fracture resistance than other resins plus moisture resistance and a natural esthetic. Flexcera Smile Ultra+ also uses NanoFit 385 technology for better marginal fit.
Designed for additive manufacturing, Valplast flexible partials come with an unconditional lifetime warranty against breakage and fracture of the denture base. Said to be produced at a lower cost than other methods—metal and acrylic, injection, and milling—Valplast requires little to no adjustment, meaning less chair time. The 3D printed partials are designed to fit more than 95% of the time with fewer adjustments, meaning no more back and forth with practices. Its fast and easy digital workflow makes uploading scans and downloading shipping labels directly from the platform easy and simple. These partials are esthetic, comfortable, noninvasive, and metal-free.
The Lucitone Digital IPN 3D Premium Tooth is the first denture tooth material from Dentsply Sirona that is designed for durability and enhanced esthetics. The material is fully integrated with the Lucitone Digital Print Denture™ system and validated for Carbon M-Series printers as well as Asiga PRO 4K and MAX UV. This material is formulated to use light reflection and refraction to create the kind of texture and translucency needed for esthetically pleasing teeth. Suitable for full, partial, and implant-supported dentures, Lucitone Digital IPN 3D Premium Tooth boosts digital dental workflows and is available in 16 A-D shades and 2 bleach options.
BruxZir Esthetic is a zirconia formulation designed for technicians seeking a versatile restoration that delivers beautiful results in any situation. Engineered specifically for the oral anterior, the new milling blanks offer an ideal combination of strength and translucency for use in single-unit crowns, veneers, bridges, screw-retained restorations, and even full-arch implant prostheses. With an average flexural strength of 980 MPa, BruxZir Esthetic Milling Blanks meet the Class 5 requirement for dental ceramics (ISO 6872:2015). They are available in thicknesses of 14 mm, 16 mm, 20 mm, and 25 mm and can be purchased in preshaded formulations equivalent to the 16 most popular shades from the VITA® shade system and in Glidewell’s proprietary bleach shades.
Model Resin is a fast-printing material developed to meet the precision, reliability, and throughput requirements of restorative dentistry. It enables the printing of accurate models and dies with crisp margins and contacts, quickly delivering high-quality results. With Model Resin, users can print even more accurate models in half the time. An optional Fit Tuning Test on Form 3, Form 3B, and Form 3B+ allows users to dial in precise dimensional fit depending on the use case.
CROWNTEC is a new-generation composite resin that can be used to manufacture such biocompatible permanent restorations as crowns, inlays, onlays, veneers, and artificial teeth for dentures. This Class IIa material, which recently received 510(k) clearance, is offered in a variety of shades to match the patient’s teeth for a natural look. CROWNTEC is available to customers of 3D Systems’ NextDent digital dentistry solution in 5 shades: A1, A2, A3, B1, and SW (bleach).
KeyDenture Try-In—a 3D printing resin for manufacturing short-term trial dentures—can be used with various printers and workflows. A biocompatible Class I resin, it is available in 3 shades (A1, B1, and BL4) and is said to yield wax-ups with accuracy, surface luster, color, and correct measurements and fit the first time around. Necessary modifications can be redone and scanned at the dental laboratory without the need for scan spray. The finished device is said to be odorless, tasteless, and free of MMA, BPA, and phthalates.
SprintRay NightGuard Flex is a flexible resin that is indicated for the fabrication of orthodontic and dental appliances like mouth guards, night guards, and splints. Now it is part of SprintRay’s digital dentistry and 3D printing solutions. It is designed to deliver the best possible patient experience with high impact strength and wear resistance, a comfortable and flavorless material, and same-day delivery. NightGuard Flex also drives greater efficiency for dental practitioners by eliminating the need for third-party resins and creating a uniform end-to-end 3D-printing workflow.
