The top new material products of 2021 as chosen by the editors of Dental Lab Products®.
Creating anatomically correct and esthetically pleasing dentition requires careful, precise work and attention to detail. Equally important is a technician’s choice of materials, as that can affect strength and esthetics. This is why it is crucial for dental lab technicians to know and understand the properties of a wide variety of the different materials available to them. Here are our top 10 editor’s choice materials for 2021.
KeyModel Ultra
This next-generation 3D dental modeling resin offers a new level of accuracy, detail, and speed. Said to be formulated for rapid printing and fast postcuring, KeyModel Ultra is also designed to increase print accuracy by reducing peel forces. The resin features easy thermoforming release, eliminating the need for release agents. It can also be carved without chipping to adjust the model as needed. The resin is available in ivory and light gray.
Flexcera Resins
Designed to provide a 3D-printed denture solution that doesn’t compromise on strength or esthetics, the Flexcera materials from Desktop Health include Flexcera Base and Flexcera Smile. The Flexcera materials are approved for exclusive use with EnvisionTEC 3D printers and can be used in a workflow to provide same-day dentures without compromising on quality. The solution can be used to produce up to 8 dentures in less than 2 hours. The materials offer high fracture and moisture resistance to provide durable prosthetics.
Biomic Stain/Glaze
Designed to be a universal coloration solution, Biomic Stain/Glaze is compatible with all ceramic dental materials, including zirconia, glass ceramics, and porcelain. The colors are simple to apply and can be custom mixed to achieve desired viscosities and shades. The Biomic system can add efficiency to all-ceramic CAD/CAM workflows. The system features a set of 2D shades designed for mimicking the colors of natural teeth, as well as additional 3D pastes that contain porcelain powder and are designed for adding esthetic effects and adjusting tooth surface morphology.
ArgenZ HT+ Multilayer
Pairing proprietary layer blending technology with the strength and consistent shade match of high translucent plus material, this homogenous 4Y zirconia disc is said to allow dental technicians to create large cases that mirror the natural gradient of dentin and enamel. With 45% translucency and 1250 MPa, ArgenZ HT+ Multilayer is suitable for single units to full arch restorations. Discs are available in 7 sizes (14 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, and 30 mm) and 16 VITA classical shades, plus 3 bleach shades.
Nacera Pearl Natural
Nacera Pearl Natural is an ultrahigh translucent multilayer material, whose natural color and translucency gradients also meet the strictest requirements of ceramists. The most common tooth colors are covered with 7 VITA classical colors, 2 VITA 3D bleach colors, and stellar white. Thanks to its strength values , connectors can be positioned in the uppermost translucent layer without difficulty. In this context, the material always offers high safety reserves for the required strength limits. The material is formulated to offer dental technicians greater processing reliability than conventional materials.
PREAT Perma Block
Perma Block is a specially designed, cellulose-based block-out material that is delivered in an easy-to-use single-dose cartridge. It is designed to adhere to a wet rubber dam, gingival and mucosal tissues, and teeth. It will adhere under water and saliva. Perma Block is used to block out undercuts associated with large gingival embrasures, implant bars, precision attachments, or fixed partial denture pontics during impression-taking procedures. Its heavy body prevents displacement during intraoral pickup of attachments with autopolymerizing resins. May be used for laboratory duplication, but not indicated for laboratory/indirect processing of acrylic.
Dentivera Milling Disc
Made from a high-performance polymer, Dentivera Milling Discs are said to be a clinically proven product and specifically designed to meet the critical performance requirements for removable partial denture frames. The discs are biocompatible and bond well with polymethyl methacrylate. Frames made from the Dentivera Milling Disc are digitally designed and milled to result in a superior fit. Dentivera is reportedly the only milling disc made from Ultaire AKP, an aryl ketone polymer engineered to provide a biocompatible, lightweight, and nonirritating alternative to metal. The disc is formulated to be rigid and supportive, yet has enough flexibility to protect the abutment teeth and preserve gum tissue. Ultaire AKP frames are digitally designed for an accurate fit and hold their shape, so they require fewer adjustments, saving dentists and patients time and money.
VeriCast OS Resin
VeriCast OS Resin is a castable resin with a red color that is said to make it easier to discern details in printed parts. It is suited for printing crowns, bridges, substructures, and removable partial frameworks. The resin is durable but burns out cleanly without leaving ash or other residue. The material is designed for both investment casting and ceramic pressing and pairs optimally with Whip Mix ResinVest. VeriCast OS Resin works with LCD and DLP printers in both 385-nm and 405-nm wavelengths.
IBT Resin
IBT Resin is formulated for the direct printing of indirect bonding trays to simplify orthodontic bracket placement. The technology enables practitioners to create aligners in-house, making this treatment plan financially viable for more patients. Clear aligners continue to have clinical limitations, and in many cases, traditional orthodontic treatment with brackets is still indicated and is the preferable option. Now, 3D-printed indirect bonding trays are bringing labor and cost savings to bracket placement procedures.
CEREC Tessera
CEREC Tessera blocks are an advanced lithium disilicate ceramic for the CEREC workflow, designed to accelerate the entire manufacturing process by shortening the glaze firing time—a crown can be fired in the CEREC SpeedFire in just 4.5 minutes. Lithium disilicates play an important role in this group of materials, with convincing results in all regions of the mouth and the ability to be used for CAD/CAM-fabricated restorations, ie, in CEREC Primemill. The blocks feature advanced material properties made possible by their optimized microstructure.
