In July 2021, Ivoclar Vivadent announced that its IPS e.max ZirCAD LT discs were available in 9 new shades. These 9 new shades include A3.5, A4, B3, B4, C1, C3, C4, D3, and D4, creating an extended portfolio to offer more desired shades. The new range of shades are available in 3 thicknesses: 14 mm, 18 mm, and 25 mm. As a popular restorative solution for dental labs and practices, it was no surprise that this piece of news was the most popular in 2021.

In late 2020, Formlabs expanded its print materials, offering for chairside workflows. It launched a new Permanent Crown Resin and Soft Tissue Starter Pack made in partnership with BEGO, and the news drew in dental professionals who were excited at the prospect of utilizing these materials to make crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers. The enhanced esthetics and durability made this news story one of our most popular in 2021.
When Carestream Dental announced the release of its CS 3800 Wireless Scanner in July 2021, readers were interested. This new wireless intraoral scanner was designed to offer clinicians freedom within a digital workflow while maintaining quality imaging and software compatibility. A standard version of the CS ScanFlow software comes with the scanner, but practices have the option of upgrading to a premium version. The CS 3800 platform is an open-source system that provides clinicians with the ability to choose which components and partners fit within their preferred workflow.

This combination boil out and polymerization unit was a popular piece of news from August 2021. The unit features quick exchange of functions and can easily be viewed on the touch screen. It also features numerous customizable settings to meet the users individual requirements, a touch screen for fast and easy operation, quick exchange of both functions (boil out and polymerization), and it touts being easy to clean with no need for tools. ERIO System’s offering of Automat WAPO-EX 8 PLUS was big news for dental labs that wanted to make things faster and more efficient.

When exocad announced PartialCAD 3.0 Galway in June 2021, the news garnered a lot of attention. Designed to enhance digital CAD/CAM possibilities for exocad users and dental technicians by providing simpler design solutions for complex cases, exocad released PartialCAD 3.0 Galway, its module for removable partial denture frameworks, with new and advanced features for the design of high-quality dentures. PartialCAD 3.0 Galway attracted much attention, making this another big hit among our readers.

At the top of the year, the lab division of Henry Schein, Inc, Zahn Dental, announced its distribution agreement with the manufacturer of DESS Implant System, Terrats Medical. This new 3D printing system from DMG America garnered attention at the beginning of the year with its 3Demax printer, 3Dewash postprocessing unit, and 3Decure light curing system, as well as LuxaPrint resins. This 3D printing system is designed to be a complete solution for dental labs, making it clear why this news was popular in 2021. It also featured news of the DentaMile connect software, which is now available for a full 3D printing workflow for dental labs.

GC celebrated its 100th founding anniversary on February 11, 2021, making this news story quite popular. As part of this anniversary celebration, GC unveiled a centennial logo, which was created out of a design competition that GC held for its associates. The company believes the final centennial logo reflects the company’s values and embodies the spirit of Nakama, a Japanese word expressing the spirit of cooperation among members of a team working toward a shared goal.

In the later part of 2020, Zahn Dental announced the launch of Zirlux Transitions Zirconia. This zirconia is said to feature special shading for enhanced esthetics that match the look of natural teeth. This “Smart Incisal Technology” creates a blueish gray effect on the top third of the disc, which reportedly minimizes the white hue found in zirconia restorations to create restorations that mimic the look and translucency of natural teeth. News of this innovative material was quite popular in 2021.
