In the spring, the companies announced that Preat’s implant design center would be working with Panthera’s metal bar manufacturing operations to create robust components, attachments, and prosthetics. This news was a preview to Lab Day West, which took place on May 20 and 21 in Garden Grove, California. A partnership between these 2 giants was sure to draw a lot of attention and make it one of the most important news of the year.
During a virtual event in March 2022 that featured international speakers and attracted attendees from around the world, Dentsply Sirona revealed its new Primeprint Solution for dental practices and laboratories, the first of a new generation of devices from the company designed to transform digital dentistry. Primeprint Solution is the first product from Dentsply Sirona specifically built to be integrated into the digital universe the company is creating in partnership with Google Cloud to connect dental practices and labs across a vast array of procedures. Google Cloud also participated in the spring event and discussed ways in which the partnership will organize and simplify digital dentistry going forward.
In March, Amann Girrbach announced a new intelligent hybrid milling unit, Ceramill Motion 3, a 5-axis machine that operates autonomously and can do so at night and on weekends when connected to the AG-Live platform. Users can access the machine remotely, receive orders safely and quickly, and monitor everything related to production and customer service. Additionally, the unit’s integrated analysis functions allow workflows in the laboratory to be analyzed and optimized continually. This new mill from Amann Girrbach made a big splash in the spring, earning its top 10 spot for 2022.
Ivoclar made it to the top with its 1-year celebration of the Ivotion Denture System and the addition of new shade. Besides Pink-V and Preference, the Ivotion CAD/CAM disc is now available in US-D, a shade suitable for patients whose gingival coloring is darker. Ivoclar’s intention was to offer a wider range of patients the kind of esthetic denture base they desired.
Aurident introduced the Aoralscan 3 intraoral scanner, which is designed to provide a state-of-the-art user experience. The third generation model features a new design, fast scanning speed, high accuracy, powerful AI processing, intuitive communication, and a 3-year warranty. It can be used in a range of clinical indications, from general restorations to implants and orthodontics. The lightweight device has one-button control, automatic antifogging, a dynamic LED indicator, and is ergonomically designed for optimal handheld operation.
At the end of 2021, Dentsply Sirona and 3Shape expanded their strategic partnership by integrating Dentsply Sirona’s Connect Case Center and 3Shape’s Dental System software. Originally established in June 2021, this partnership gave 3Shape users of the TRIOS intraoral scanner access to Dentsply Sirona’s SureSmile Clear Aligners platform, allowing them to use both Primescan and Omnicam intraoral scanners to give dental labs safe and secure access to data through the Connect Case Center Portal.
At the beginning of 2022, Glidewell announced the appointment of Stephanie Goddard as its new chief executive officer. She joined the company in 2006 as vice president of human resources and served in executive-level positions for business operations, product and software development, direct sales, and analytics. She succeeds Jim Glidewell, CDT, who continued as Glidewell president. “I’m obviously humbled by the new title and honored by Jim’s faith and trust,” Goddard said in the news release. “While the responsibility is daunting, I’m thrilled by the continued opportunity to positively impact the future of dentistry. As we like to say here: ‘Every smile deserves a second chance.’”
In January 2022, Zest Dental announced that it had terminated its agreement with Zimmer Biomet to distribute all products, including LOCATOR, LOCATOR R-Tx overdenture abutments, and LOCATOR Overdenture Implants (LODI). The LOCATOR product line is compatible with Zimmer Biomet implants and can be purchased directly from Zest or the dental laboratory. This news was popular as it announced a change in the industry that technicians and other lab staff found interesting.
In May, Amann Girrbach announced a partnership with TRI Dental Implants for a new matrix®dental implant, which is designed for new digital manufacturing technologies like CAD/CAM milling and 3D printing. The product makes possible the planning of dentures directly on the implant—for single crowns, multipart bars and bridges, and full arches—without the need for an abutment. It is also designed to offer no restriction on angulation and indication, no need for cementation, and the option to digitally plan 100% patient-specific emergence profiles, all of which are said to guarantee durability and highly esthetic results. In January 2022, Carbon announced the launch of M3 and M3 Max 3D printers, which are designed to leverage the next generation of DLS printing technology and provide up to 2.5X throughput improvements for dental models compared with previous generations, driving further value for dental labs. The printers’ numerous features streamline 3D printing workflows and allow labs to manufacture more efficiently.
