The concept of embedding a foreign object into a person’s jaw to replace a missing tooth goes back approximately 4,000 years. But it’s in the last half century that dental implants made their massive leap forward to really make improvements on patients’ health and quality of life.
Whether it’s a single implant to replace a single missing tooth, or multiple implants to support a larger restoration, dental implants are now one of the most effective ways to restore patients’ form and function.
In the early days of implant dentistry, these solutions were placed by oral surgery specialists who focused time and training to become experts on these procedures. Today patients expect implants as an option and they are placed by specialists and GPs alike. With newer technologies, including 3D treatment planning and surgical guide systems, dental implants are easier than ever to place, and more clinicians and patients are enjoying the benefits.
The following pages provide a look at some of the many available dental implant systems, as well as some facts and details about the features and technologies helping these tiny solutions become a huge part of modern dentistry.

Step aside humans, robots are here to help place implants
While there are a range of guided implant options from placement guides to live, on-screen navigation guides, the Yomi Robotic Dental System is currently the only FDA-cleared robotic device for dental implant surgery. Here’s a look at the system:
Yomi Robotic Dental System
Designed to allow clinicians to place implants with a simple, digital workflow, Yomi provides real-time, multi-sensory guidance to help clinicians place implants with a high level of precision. The robotic system provides visual and audio feedback and physical cues that guide the surgeon to the precise implant location and angulation and then maintains the optimized handpiece trajectory. The system tracks patient movements and stops when the implant is at the desired depth. A graphic display also helps clinicians stay on the treatment plan. While Yomi guides the clinician, the system does not take control away from the surgeon and allows for intraoperative adjustments.
