Anchored by the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting, this week will also see Lab Day, and half a dozen other dental academy and society meetings converging on the windy city. With so much happening, it’s no wonder this slate of meetings is traditionally a launchpad for numerous new dental products.
Read on for a look at some of the most exciting innovations on display, as well as a preview of some of the interesting educational sessions planned throughout the 2022 Chicago Midwinter events.

Scheduled for Friday Morning, the 2022 Keynote speaker is Scott D. Swank, DDS, who has spent the past 2 decades serving as curator of the Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore, Maryland. Known for his passion for dentistry and the ways it has grown and changed over the years, Dr Swank is an engaging speaker who plans to share his thoughts on key moments in dental history, as well as to see how informed the audience is with some dental trivia.
Among the biggest news from the opening days of the show is the launch of OraPharma’s new clear aligner solution, OraFit. This new aligner solution features a 3-layer material designed for the optimal balance of strength and comfort to provide continuous force while holding its shape for 7 days. The material is also said to stay clearer longer than other materials used to create clear aligners.
The Midwinter exhibit hall will also be the first place dental professionals can get their hands on the latest electric handpiece from Bien-Air, the Nova. Designed to be as small and narrow as possible, this tiny-headed handpiece wowed DPR Chief Dental Editor and Technology Editor John Flucke, DDS in a recent test drive. Its small size doesn’t come at the expense of power and control, and the handpiece offers numerous features designed to enhance durability and increase patient safety.
Dr Flucke believes in the benefits of electric handpieces, and the Bien-Air Nova is a model he thinks everyone should check out.
The newest material from Shofu is another standout debut at the Midwinter Meeting. Designed to meet the needs of younger patients, Beautifil Kids SA is a light-cured, self-adhesive, flowable composite material with bioactive Giomer Technology. The nano-hybrid material provides a high bond strength, and it stays where it is placed. The materials is especially suited for pediatric patients due to its anti-bacterial properties, its ability to neutralize acid, and its fluoride release and recharge capabilities.
Chairside CAD/CAM was once a limited playing field with just a couple options for dental practices to choose from. Today that’s changing rapidly, as open-architecture solutions are now the norm, and the next phase of this technology evolution is beginning with validated partnerships between different digital dental solutions. This is spurred forward by the latest connection linking up Formlabs 3D printers with Medit intraoral scanners.
The connection between these companies comes via the Medit Link platform where practices can now access Formlabs PreForm CAD application. The software allows practices to quickly and easily convert digital impressions into digital models and appliances that can then be printed using Formlabs’ Form 3B+ printer.
Ahead of the CDS Midwinter Meeting, HeyGears announced a slate of new chairside solutions aimed at making chairside 3D printing easy and efficienct for dental practices. The new UltraCraft ChairSide 3D printer is compatible with more than 10 3D print resins and can be used to produce more than 20 applications including fixed restorations, removables, implant cases, and orthodontics. The printer uses a new CapsulePrint system to make changing resins quick and simple.
The printer is designed to be open architecture to work with a range of scanners, and it connects to HeyGears cloud, a new remote design service, allowing clinicians to scan their cases, send the scans for a design, and then have those designs printed using the UltraCraft ChairSide printer.
Along with the new printer are a pair of support devices, the UltraCraft Air Wash, and the UltraCraft AirCure. Both of these solutions are used for post-processing 3D printed parts. Also, practices looking for a top-of-the-line printer can upgrade to the UltraCraft ChairSide Pro, a highly-accurate printer designed for busy practices. The Pro model can reportedly produce up to 8 surgical guides in just 20 minutes.
