CALM is designed to address doctors' concerns over patient movement during a 3D scan.
The No. 1 disruptor of image quality for dentists is patient movement. During a dentist appointment, a doctor may need to take several 3D X-ray scans to get a single image of diagnostic quality. Often a child, an individual with special needs or an elderly patient are challenged to remain still. This may result in the patient being X-rayed multiple times, which adds more time to the appointment and frustration for patient and doctor, not to mention the concern of additional exposure to radiation.
Planmeca has created Planmeca CALMTM (Correction Algorithm for Latent Movement), a proprietary Planmeca algorithm, to address doctors' concerns over patient movement during a 3D scan. With Planmeca CALM, CBCTs can reportedly analyze and compensate for the slight movement that can occur during a scan to provide improved diagnostic quality images. The addition of this feature (available for every new Planmeca ProMax® 3D imaging system), is engineered to streamline the imaging process, minimizing retakes while improving diagnosis. The important benefit to patients: less retakes equals less radiation while achieving better diagnostic images.

“Dentists evaluating CBCT machines for purchase should focus critically on each manufacturer’s solutions for stabilizing the patient in the machine,“ states Dr. Dale A. Miles DDS, MS. "Planmeca CALM addresses this doctor’s requirement as it can compensate for slight movement to produce diagnostic quality images. This exclusive Planmeca feature will have an important impact on patients and doctors.
Planmeca CALM is available on new Planmeca ProMax® 3D imaging systems or as an upgrade for existing units. The Planmeca ProMax 3D family consists of a complete line of CBCT imaging systems with optional digital 2D panoramic and cephalometry in the same unit.
