A Q&A with MDT founders Dr. Robert Gregg, Dr. Delwin McCarthy about the LANAP Protocol, PerioLase MVP-7 digital dental laser.

Q: To what do you attribute the success of Millennium Dental Technologies and the LANAP protocol?
A: Our guiding principle is, “It’s all about the patient.” This has been the case in all of our clinical activities as well as business decisions. Research and what’s in the patient’s best interest have been MDT’s driving force since the beginning. As a result, the LANAP protocol is a real-world clinical protocol, tested over 21 years in private practice and research validated-which meets the definition of true evidence-based dentistry-all factors in our success.

The ADA defines evidence-based dentistry as one that combines the clinician’s own expertise with science and the patient’s needs/wants. As the longest existing dental laser manufacture in history (same name, same founders, same management team, same device, and the same value proposition) no other dental laser manufacturer has invested the commitment, the energy or the hard dollars in research and product enhancements. That all started 13 years ago with a 6-month return guarantee on the LANAP clinical results. There is no other manufacturer in health care that has ever guaranteed a clinical outcome. MDT guarantees the LANAP protocol will result in 50% pocket reduction by regeneration versus subtraction.

Q: How can you guarantee clinical results?
A: Experience! The LANAP protocol was developed during a decade-long process in a real-world practice setting.

We pass this knowledge to other clinicians through exceptional training received through the Institute of Advanced Laser Dentistry. We have more than 30 clinical instructors overseeing our live-patient training, with a 3:1 instructor-to-student ratio. Clinicians treat three patients with varying degrees of periodontitis during training.

Q: Describe your investment in research.
A: In the last 14 years, 256 positive patient outcomes have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Just this spring, the results of a long-term tooth survival study by Dr. Lloyd Tilt were published in General Dentistry. A second study by Dr. Marc Nevins was published in the 2012 September/October issue of the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. There’s also our university-based, prospective, blinded study launched in 2011. The  NIH-registered, FDA-designed study with 6-month data to be available at the AAP Annual Meeting this September. See www.clinicaltrials.gov and search for “LANAP.”

Q: It seems like the PerioLase MVP-7 is the buzz right now in lasers. What’s new?
A: The PerioLase MVP-7 was honored with the Pride Institute “Best in Class” technology award for the world’s first integration of the Android™ tablet display into a medical device. This enables clinicians immediate access to patient treatment records at their fingertips, as well as continual product upgrades without the purchase of new equipment, making obsolescence obsolete.

The LANAP Protocol
The patented LANAP protocol is a laser periodontitis treatment with guaranteed results histologically proven to regrow tissues lost to gum disease. This evidence-based treatment is the only protocol to receive FDA clearance for “attachment (Sharpey Fibers) to the new root surface coating (cementum) in the absence of long junctional epithelium.” The LANAP protocol treats all levels of periodontitis-including “hopeless” teeth-with less pain, faster recovery time, and long-term success.

The LAPIP Protocol
The LAPIP Procedure is a modification of the well-defined LANAP protocol to effectively treat the unique challenges of failing implants and destroy perio pathogens and endotoxins. The LAPIP protocol eliminates local inflammatory response with consistent, positive results in the regeneration of alveolar bone. The LAPIP protocol is part of the five days of guided hands-on training included in the PerioLase Periodontal Package®, taught by the Institute of Advanced Laser Dentistry.

PerioLase MVP-7
The award-winning PerioLase® MVP-7™ Digital TruePulse™ Nd:YAG laser is the world’s first medical device to incorporate an Android™ tablet display, combining advanced laser components with the latest LCD display technology for optimum operating experience. Clinicians enjoy the intuitive display with fingertip controls, immediate access to patient treatment history, factory-presets for common laser-based procedures, plus a built-in power meter for treatment accuracy and patient safety.
