Learning about Allana Smiles: How dental practices can help cancer patients

While I was attending the recent Speaking Consulting Network meeting in Tampa, I had the chance to listen to my friend and colleague Adele Reische give a passionate talk about Allana Smiles, an organization that matches dental offices with cancer patients who are waiting for dental clearance before they can begin their chemotherapy treatments.

One of the things that jumped out at me during Adele’s talk was the length of time that some cancer patients are waiting before they begin their chemotherapy, simply because they can’t schedule a visit with the dentist. As we all are sadly aware, time is critical when battling cancer.

After we left Tampa, I asked Adele if she would have time to sit down with me and talk about Allana Smiles and the work they are doing throughout the country. The amazing thing about this charity is that they are asking for dental practices to volunteer to look at one patient per month. That’s it. It is by no means a huge time or resource commitment, yet it can make all of the difference in the life of a cancer patient.
