Danilov Dental Laboratory is a full-service laboratory in Carmichael, Calif., specializing in complex crown and bridge, ceramics, removable full and partial dentures, implants, and full-cast restorations. Founded in 1979 by Jack Z. Danilov, GMDT, Danilov Dental has 10 employees and is a Massad certified lab. Danilov is a member of the Dr. Joe Massad Lecture team.
The Product
Developed as an economical solution for work on precious metals, non-precious alloys, acrylics and plaster in the dental laboratory, the KOMET S-Cutters™ are precision-engineered with a high number of blades to ensure durability and accuracy over a long service life.
The tungsten-carbide S-Cutters™ are offered in a universal tooth pattern with offset blades. The staggered tooth configurations enhance ergonomic comfort and work position for the operator.
The specially designed blades and tooth configurations also promote operator safety when working on precious metals and non-precious alloys because the cutters generate only short, granular metal chips that cannot penetrate the skin. The KOMET S-Cutter laboratory carbides for use on precious metal have a recommended rotational speed of 25,000 rpm. When used on non-precious alloys, acrylics and plaster, the recommended speed is 15,000 rpm.
KOMET S-Cutters™ are available in 20 different head configurations to meet the needs and challenges encountered in day-to-day and more demanding laboratory cases. Also available is the KOMET Specialty S-Cutter kit (4542.104), which includes six different selected cutters.
The Results
Jack Danilov and his technicians at Danilov Dental Laboratory have been using the S-Cutters™, along with other KOMET burs, for many years. They use the S-Cutters™ for all kinds of denture work, Danilov said, and they couldn’t be happier with the results these burs provide, especially when it comes to acrylics.
“A lot of people say burs are burs, but I don’t think that’s true,” Danilov said. “I think, quite frankly, KOMET actually has more durable burs that stay sharper for a longer time. They are the best burs available today.”
So what are some of the benefits that come with using these instruments? Not only are they durable, they offer a really fine cut, Danilov said. The grooves provide a fine cut on acrylic, and that has led to a lot of time savings for this lab and increased ROI.
“If the bur is doing a fine cut you don’t have to go back over and over to cut it. This is the excitement of these burs,” Danilov said. “Once you cut, it becomes almost like a polished final product. I think that’s quite important because you don’t have to go back and back cutting it. It’s cut one time and you get a fine, proper cut. I think that’s really an advantage. That saves you time and saves you money in the long run.”
The S-Cutter’s fine grooves make the fine cutting of acrylic possible, Danilov said, while also speeding up the cutting time, again saving his laboratory both time and money.
These burs are high quality products, Danilov said, that come from a trusted manufacturer he’s been working with for quite a long time. He’s been happy with the customer service over the years, and said lab technicians who aren’t using the S-Cutters™ yet should start. The fact that they’re durable, provide a fine cut that results in an almost final, polished product is all the reason you need to give these burs a try in your laboratory, Danilov said.
“Putting all those things together I think gives you enough of a reason to be comfortable using these burs,” Danilov said. “Otherwise you can use all kinds of burs. I just think these burs are much more up the alley of a person who wants to be efficient and quick. That’s how I see it.“
