A look at some of the recently announced products from the dental industry.
OnTheCover: Monet™ Laser Curing Light
Described as the world’s first handheld laser dental curing light, the Monet Laser Curing Light uses advanced laser engineering to provide fast and reliable curing of dental materials. The light is capable of curing to a depth of 8 mm in a 3-second cure cycle with a collimated 12-mm diameter beam that reportedly does not lose intensity as the light source is moved farther away from the material being cured. Aperture attachments provide attenuation of the light intensity and offer the ability to use focused beam sizes of 2, 4, or 6 mm in diameter. Cordless with interchangeable rechargeable batteries, the light also features a head that rotates for easier access to cure restorations anywhere in the oral cavity.
Why this light breaks new ground:
Dental curing lights are in constant use in almost every dental practice, and consistent curing outcomes are a key part to providing consistent, long-lasting dental restorations. Building on advancements in diode lasers as well as laser-adjacent technologies including modules, optics, mechanics, and electronics, the Monet brings a familiar technology to a new area of clinical dentistry. Still, it is designed in a familiar form factor, allowing clinicians to put laser curing technology to use without having to change workflows or master a new technology.
OnTheCover: Permanent Crown Resin
Created for production of 3D-printed definitive dental restorations either chairside or in a lab, Permanent Crown Resin is said to make CAD/CAM crown and bridge cases easier and less expensive to complete. A tooth-colored, ceramic-filled resin, the material was developed in a partnership between Formlabs and BEGO and can be used to produce single crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers. The Permanent Crown Resin material is described as an affordable alternative to milled crowns while offering the high strength, color stability, and physical durability required in a permanent restoration.
Why this material represents a change:
3D printing is not new to the field of dentistry, and as a technology capable of quickly and economically producing small, unique structures with a high level of detail, it’s a perfect fit for dental clinics and labs. But while the technology has been used for a wide range of applications across multiple dental specialties, its restorative applications had been limited, especially for chairside use. Compatible with the Formlabs 3B tabletop 3D printer, Permanent Crown Resin takes the use of additive manufacturing to chairside CAD/CAM applications to a whole new level and provides a true alternative to milled CAD/CAM crowns.
OnTheCover: everX Flow™
Designed to work similar to rebar in a construction project, everX Flow is a composite substructure material that incorporates glass microfibers and full silane coverage technologies to reportedly strengthen both restorations and weakened tooth structure from within. Suited for use as a dentin replacement in bulk fill and core build-up procedures, it also can be applied to help prevent or repair cracked dentition in endodontic cases. The material’s thixotropic properties help it adapt to even the most challenging preparation while avoiding porosities. With an injectable viscosity, everX Flow is easy to place without slumping, making it ideal for maxillary and mandibular molar restorations.
What sets this material apart:
Designed for use with a biomimetic restorative technique, everX Flow is optimized for coronal restorations and repair of large cavities in high-stress areas of the mouth. The material is available in two shades with different depths of cure to suit the specific uses. The Bulk shade can be cured to a depth of 5.5 mm and is ideal for bulk fill situations. The Dentin shade cures to a depth of 2 mm and is suited for both core build-ups and when esthetics results are important to the case outcome. Once everX Flow is placed and cured, it is designed to be covered with a layer of conventional composite.
[ Mobile Vacuum System ]
Mojave Mobile
Editor's Choice: Designed with a sound-absorbing hood to reduce operatory sounds.
The Mojave Mobile suction unit is designed to help provide care while reducing the risks caused by the generation of aerosols. A portable unit capable of providing both intraoral and extraoral suction simultaneously, it offers more than 12 standard cubic feet per minute of suction. The dry vacuum system is described as plug-and-play, as it can be moved between operatories easily and just needs a power connection to function. It is equipped with 3 hoses—a saliva ejector, an HVE tip, and an aerosol funnel—and provides appropriate aerosol mitigation. It separates air, water, and amalgam with an easily cleanable fluids container, a built-in amalgam separator, and a HEPA quality air filter.
[ Rotary File ]
ZenFlex™ NiTi Rotary Shaping File
Featuring high cutting efficiency, an ideal balance of strength and flexibility, and a minimally invasive design, the ZenFlexNiTi Rotary Shaping File is designed to deliver exceptional resistance to torsional stress and cyclic fatigue, while offering the flexibility and controlled memory to accommodate even the most complex canal anatomies. Through this heat treat process, ZenFlex provides the strength and flexibility to accommodate up to 90° curves. Additionally, it has exceptional controlled memory to maintain its precurved shape to better follow the most challenging canal anatomies.
[ 3D Printing ]
3Demax
The 3Demax is a compact, high-precision, high-speed 3D printer that can be used for a wide range of applications using DLP technology. With ultra-fine resolution and a generously sized build plate, it accurately produces surgical guides, burn-out casting molds, mouthguards, occlusal splints, crowns and bridges, physical models and more. Other benefits include high-speed precision processing; easy and user-friendly system; software supported validated workflow; indicated for a wide range of 3D dental applications; accepts all standard STL files; and RFID technology for automated material identification.
[ LED Lighting for Loupes ]
Axis™ LED Light with Activ™ Battery System
The Axis LED Light with Activ Battery System is described as the first LED light solution to pair a clip-on magnetic light with a wearable neckband battery for improved comfort and visualization during dental, oral and maxillofacial, and cosmetic facial procedures. The Axis clip-on magnetic LED light offers 30,000 lux illuminance for more than 5 hours of working time. The Axis light delivers bright, uniform illuminance filling the entire viewing field without shadowing or glare. When used with 2.5 times magnification at a working distance of 14 inches, the Axis light illuminates a uniform 4-inch spot field.
[ Universal Bonding System ]
3M™ RelyX™ Universal Resin Cement and 3M™ Scotchbond™ Universal Plus Adhesive
Editor's Choice: A truly universal 2-component system for all direct and indirect bonding applications.
When used alone, RelyX Universal Resin Cement works as a self-adhesive resin cement with optimal bond strength reliably solving routine cases with maximized efficiency. Scotchbond Universal Plus Adhesive is the first radiopaque, all-in-one universal adhesive. It serves as a universal primer for all materials including glass ceramics and further boosts bond strength of RelyX Universal Resin Cement for demanding adhesive resin cement cases, according to 3M.
