After petitioning the American Dental Association’s Code Maintenance Committee (formerly known as the Code Revision Committee and the Code Advisory Committee), Perio Protect succeeded in its effort to have the CDT Code updated to include a sealed medicament tray.  As a result, the updated CDT Code recognizes Perio Tray delivery as a reportedly effective treatment for chronic gum disease, an affliction that nearly 75% of Americans experience at some point in their lives.

As a prescription medical device, Perio Trays are often used to place medication in the periodontal pocket to treat acute or chronic periodontal diseases.   A Perio Tray’s customized seals and extensions prevent the medication from leaking into the oral cavity and applies pressure to direct medication to the periodontal pocket.  Additionally, Perio Trays serve as a customized adjunct to conventional therapy for those who decline surgical treatment.

As more and more dentists embrace Perio Tray technology, the new code recognizes the need to document the fabrication and prescription of customized trays.  Additionally, insurers will now be able to more easily define which policies and plans will provide coverage for the new code.
