In the practice of instrument reprocessing, one of the most important and misunderstood steps is cleaning. It has been demonstrated that any remaining debris on an instrument tip may interfere with the sterilization process and cross contamination may occur. In other words, if an instrument is not thoroughly cleaned prior to entering the autoclave, sterility cannot be guaranteed. Thus, the importance of instrument cleaning is paramount.
