2023 was a year for innovation in all regards, and restorative dentistry was not exempt from this fact. The year saw the introduction of a diverse array of cutting-edge restorative dental products, each meticulously crafted to deliver forward-thinking, intelligent, and efficient solutions that revolutionized the traditional landscape of dental care. Here are the top 10 restorative dental products of 2023.
// Matrix System
3M™ Filtek™ Matrix
The 3M™ Filtek™ Matrix is a new restorative solution that makes composite placement less stressful and more predictable for dentists and more affordable for their patients. With today’s dental patients looking for less invasive options to improve their smile at a price they can afford, this custom matrix system is said to deliver less stressful and more predictable results, while also being less costly for patients. The Filtek Matrix procedure begins with a digital restoration design. A patient-specific matrix is created that helps the clinician transfer the digital design to the patient’s teeth using 3M dental composites. Unlike more invasive ceramic procedures that often require the removal of tooth structure, the Filtek Matrix relies on additive composite techniques where little to no tooth reduction is required. In a clinical evaluation, dentists reported that using the matrix increased their confidence, delivered predictable and esthetic results, and saved chair time. Clinicians can pair the Filtek Matrix with 3M™ Filtek™ Dental Restoratives to deliver optimal composite strength and wear resistance for patients.
// Universal Composite
Transcend™
Transcend is a new universal composite that is designed with high levels of translucency to allow clinicians to achieve esthetic results that patients desire from their restorative work. Transcend uses Ultradent’s Resin Particle Match™ technology to ensure those high levels of translucency which in turn lead to ideal pigmentation and opacity. Transcend uses a nanohybrid formula that makes it suitable for posterior and anterior restorations, as well as lending it good handling properties. It is said to be malleable without sacrificing strength. It aims to maintain balance in its high wear-resistant but less abrasive nature. Transcend also touts the ability to block underlying tooth color via its opacity, which eliminates the need for a blocker shade, freeing up space in the inventory and saving money. Transcend composite also features 4 dentin shades and 2 enamel shades for cases requiring layering.
// Composite
Stela
A single-shade, self-cure composite said to be well suited for Class I, II, III, and V restorations, Stela is designed for efficient, reliable placement. The composite works in conjunction with Stela Primer, which provides the catalyst to initiate polymerization; this allows the material to cure starting with the restoration interface, rather than the exterior surface. This is said to help prevent marginal gaps, eliminate postoperative sensitivity, and reduce restoration failure. Available in a single shade in either syringe or capsule delivery, the material can reportedly be placed in as little as 15 seconds. Its 2-step workflow is said to eliminate the need for the traditional etch, prime, bond, and light cure composite workflow.

OMNICHROMA Flow BULK
Tokuyama Dental America has expanded its OMNICHROMA family by launching OMNICHROMA Flow BULK. OMNICHROMA Flow BULK is a 1-shade bulk fill composite capable of shade matching any tooth color from A1 to D4 and is designed to streamline clinician workflows, saving time and money. It is a low-viscosity, light-cured material that can be placed in 3.5-mm increments. The material esthetically matches every tooth color with a single shade, thanks to smart chromatic technology and uniformly sized supranano spherical fillers. Its low polymerization shrinkage, compressive strength, high polishability, and cavity line adaptation make it suitable for anterior and posterior restorations. Dentists have the flexibility to choose from the OMNICHROMA composite portfolio to address additional restorative needs.
// 3D Print Resin
Temporary CB Resin Bleach
The new extra white Bleach shade of Temporary CB Resin is designed for temporary crown and bridge restorations, inlays, onlays, and veneers, providing excellent marginal adaptation, strength, and esthetics. This tooth-colored resin can be used in traditional temporary cements to fix restorations and lasts up to 12 months. Designed with Formlabs’ partner, BEGO, the new Temporary CB Resin will help dentists deliver even brighter smiles. It is indicated for up to 7-unit bridges and is available in 5 shades, including the new Bleach shade.

Visalys® Fill and Flow
Kettenbach LP has created an expansion of its Visalys family of composites with new Visalys Fill and Visalys Flow light-curing, radiopaque, nanohybrid filling materials. These materials are indicated for Class I to VI fillings. There is a Flex Shade System within Fill and Flow that is said to offer enhanced esthetics through its VITA A1-D4 shade matching. It also offers a Bleach shade and OA2 opaque shade for even more shade flexibility. Visalys Fill is designed with easy handling and modeling in mind and is said to not stick to instruments. Visalys Flow contains a low viscosity that allows for good wetting and adaptation to cavity walls. It is also suitable for anterior and posterior restorations. Both Fill and Flow are comprised of high inorganic filler content which is said to result in high flexural strength. Combining these mechanical properties with its Flex Shade System, Kettenbach aims to offer a highly durable and esthetic filling.
// Matrix Band
QuickConnect Anatomy Band
The QuickConnect Anatomy Band from Rhondium is a circumferential matrix band that can be swiftly placed using a specialized carrier that can be positioned for placement in any quadrant and allows for efficient tightening. Made of hard, contoured foil and just 35 µm thick, the matrix bands are designed to replicate the contours of the natural dentition and retain their shape while pushing through tight contacts. Beyond the innovative system for easy placement and removal of the matrix, the QuickConnect Anatomy Band also helps solve the problem of loose contacts due to matrices not maintaining optimal contact with the adjacent tooth. To address this, the bands are available with tabs at their top edge that can be pulled with a dental probe or temporarily tacked to the occlusal surfaces of adjacent teeth to ensure optimal contacts while light curing restorative materials.
// Sectional Matrix System
Strata-G
The Strata-G™ sectional matrix system is designed to form a 270° Seal™ for ultimate flash control. It is said to provide strong tooth separation yet is easier to open. Nitinol drawn-wire nickel titanium is aligned at the molecular level for superior performance yet requires less effort to open, according to the company. Garrison’s proprietary StrataSet™ treatment maximizes the longevity of this advanced material. Other features include improved anatomy and unbeatable grip; wider indications with the Wide Preparation separator ring (green) that makes Strata-G versatile and user-friendly; a smooth tunnel design that easily accommodates stacking of wedges; soft retentive fins that smoothly fold down during wedge insertion and spring back when clear of the interproximal space, locking Strata-G Wedges in place; improved seal by design; optimized marginal ridge; and the ProfileBooster™ subgingival apron. Also, the system’s Firm Bands are well suited for challenging cases. A critical addition in the Strata-G kit, Firm Bands are specially tempered stainless steel and measure only 0.0015 in. Their stiffer nature makes them ideal for unbroken contacts and extradeep or extrawide preparations.

// Stain & Glaze
Rodin All-Purpose Glaze
The Rodin All-Purpose Glaze is a biocompatible, Class II, light-curing resin that is designed to deliver a glossy finish. This glaze is formulated to seamlessly integrate with all Rodin resin substrates to ensure a polished surface that improves translucency.Using the All-Purpose Glaze reportedly offers production advantages, such as the sealing of microfractures that can occur during support removal, wear resistance, and the reduction of manual polishing. This glaze is suited for use with direct and indirect composite restorations and provisional devices.
