A look at some of the recently announced products from the dental laboratory industry.
This open source 5-axis mill is designed to provide users with flexibility. It can reportedly accept input from the most popular dental design programs for versatility. The Versamill 5X-500 can process most milling materials, including wax, zirconia, acrylic, composites, PMMA, and glass-ceramics. Its German-made 60,000 rpm spindle offers 55Ncm of torque. With a cooling system that does not require additional liquid cooling, the unit is designed for smooth operation with minimal run-out, deflection, and thermal expansion concerns. Its 20-station automatic cartridge changer with zero-point fixturing allows for continuous operation.
What makes this milling system noteworthy:
The Versamill 5X-500 is constructed using “full-frame” technology that is usually found in CNC industrial machines. This design allows the machine to perform reliably with high precision for a long period. Its cast aluminum-alloy frame, heavy-duty rotary reduction gears, zero-stack tolerance drive systems, linear guideways, and 3-way hybrid ceramic spindle allow for vibration-free operation for quality restorations. These components also contribute to the unit’s longevity.
Zirlux Transitions is a transitional layered zirconia that is designed to help dental laboratories produce highly esthetic and durable restorations. Using layered technology, it reportedly mimics natural, lifelike esthetics. The new zirconia material features 1200 MPa, which helps ensure the stability of stress-bearing restorations. Zirlux Transitions is compatible with most dental mills and is indicated for full-contour anterior and posterior crowns, bridges, inlays, and onlays, as well as single tooth and bridge frameworks in the anterior and posterior, up to 14 units. The disc is available in 98.5 mm discs and comes in all 16 classic VITA shades and 1 bleach shade.
Why this zirconia disc deserves a look:
Zirlux Transitions features patented Smart Incisal® Technology, which creates a bluish-gray effect on the top third zone of the zirconia disc. This helps minimize the white hue of a restoration while enhancing its bluish-gray translucency to mimic natural teeth esthetics once milled and sintered. Additionally, the Smart Incisal Technology enables the material to produce a higher chroma in the cervical area and a decreasing chroma towards the incisal area. This feature offers technicians a balance between strength and translucency for both anterior and posterior restorations.
The 3Demax is designed to be a compact, high-precision, high-speed 3D printer used in an array of applications using digital light processing technology. Its patented Force Feedback technology is said to accelerate printing by up to 50% The 3Demax minimizes the risk of misprints using a highly sensitive load cell so each layer process is carefully controlled during printing. Radiofrequency identification reportedly makes the unit easy to calibrate, which eliminates misapplications by ensuring automatic material identification. At 130 x 75 x 90 mm, the build plate is large enough to allow for multiple device production. The unit has a minimal footprint at 335 x 349 x 541 mm in size.
Why this 3D printer stands out:
DMG America offers a selection of components and materials that, when integrated with the 3Demax, allows for a seamless digital workflow. The 3Dewash is designed for the washing of 3D printed devices using digital light processing technology. The pre-set programs wash the remaining nonpolymerized resin from the appliance in about 4 to 8 minutes. The 3Dcure unit is used for the curing of 3D resins with 360° illumination. The pre-set programs lock in the devices’ mechanical properties, which ensures proper curing according to resin specifications.
Draft Resin
Draft Resin has been reformulated for a high degree of accuracy and improved part quality. The adjusted formula is designed to offer improved surface finish, and postprocessing requirements and comes in a new gray color. It can reportedly deliver a dental model in under 20 minutes and produce 8 models in about 75 minutes. Draft Resin is available in 2 layer height settings—200 µm for the fastest print speeds and same-day appliances or 100 µm for more detailed, vertically oriented models. This resin also allows for minimal support removal, wash, and cure times.
LayZir
This all-indication zirconia disc is FDA cleared and manufactured using premium yttrium-stabilized zirconia. Its state-of-the-art multidimensional gradation technology is designed to blend 3Y and 5Y to achieve maximum strength throughout the restoration while maintaining esthetic characteristics. This proprietary gradation technology is also designed to greatly reduce sintering. LayZir is said to have excellent millability and has a flexural strength of 1450 MPa, and is designed for a high natural translucency for all indications. It is available in disc sizes as small as 98x14 up to 98x25 and comes in 6 shades.
TRU® & PUR®
With Sterngold’s Convenience Bundles, every TRU conical hex and every PUR internal hex implant is bundled with 5 restorative components for 1 flat fee. There are 3 available bundles, starting with the All-in-1: a TRU or PUR Implant, plus a choice of 5 restorative components for either digital or analog cases. For an analog case, the implant is bundled with a healing abutment, an open/closed tray impression coping, a straight abutment, an analog, and a prosthetic screw. For digital cases, the implant is bundled with a healing abutment, a scan body, a Ti base, and a Ti prosthetic screw. The Builder kit comes with a choice of 15, 30, 50, or 100 implants, and The Practice bundle offers 15 or 30 implants with the enhanced Surgical Kit.
Quick Frame
The Quick Frame magnetic holder clamps discs into the S2 and S5 dental milling and grinding machines without the need of tools. The holder is designed for efficiency, with the discs being loaded in seconds as opposed to using a screwdriver. The Quick Frame’s magnets eliminate the risk of the disc rim breaking off and can also hold plastic blanks such as PMMA, zirconia, and wax. The Quick Frame is available with every purchase of each new S5 or separately as an accessory.
Structur CAD
These composite CAD/CAM blocks and discs are ideal for both short- and long-term restorations for up to 3 years, and they enable technicians to mill temporary crowns and bridges quickly and reliably. Structur CAD is designed for quick and easy polishing, and its fluorescence is reportedly similar to natural teeth, allowing for a natural-looking and toothlike restoration. Cementation is said to be customizable to fit the patient’s situation—either with temporary cement or by using adhesive for longer wear periods. There is no need for MMA primer, and the composite does not need to be fired or glazed. It is available in shades A1, A2, and A3 and in 40L blocks or 20 mm-thick discs with a diameter of 98.4.
Opti-Cryl® Characterization Kit Heat Curing Acrylic
Opti-Cryl is a thermo-polymerizable acrylic resin that is indicated for the elaboration of bases for total, partial, and removable prostheses. Indicated for heat curing only, it is designed for optimal characterization for highly esthetic denture prostheses. Plus, its easy polishability offers ultimate esthetics. The kit contains eight 40-g bottles and colors Flat Pink, Smooth C, Smooth Original, Smooth B, Smooth VR5, Smooth Meharry, Red V51, and Beige-A4 are included.
KeyOrtho IBT™
Ideal for printing orthodontic transfer trays for positioning brackets, KeyOrtho IBT’s translucency allows for exact positioning before and after bracket placement. Its high tensile strength offers easy application of brackets in a single step, which reportedly reduces chair time to minutes. KeyOrtho IBT is designed for flexibility for easy removal and is said to work with all general bracket systems. It is also odorless and tasteless for patient comfort and is available in 0.5-kg or 1-kg bottles.
PlanMill® 50 S
This 5-axis milling unit can be used for wet or dry processing. It can handle discs or blocks for milling or grinding and can mill a range of materials, including zirconia. The PlanMill 50 S features a high-speed spindle and automatic tool changer for 12 tools to keep production running at maximum power. Indicated for crown and bridge designs, inlays, onlays, veneers, wax-ups, and more, it offers technicians the flexibility to address a variety of cases. Its open platform allows for the import, export, and editing of various file formats. The software can be customized for different user preferences.
