Why one clinician uses Hemaseal & Cide Desensitizer every day and believes other clinicians should follow suit.
For Richard Lipscomb, Jr, DDS, there’s 1 particular product he has reached for every day for approximately 5 years now; yet it’s something he thinks more clinicians should be aware of in their day-to-day routine of delivering restorative care. It’s not a product he switched to while replacing another product, it’s just something he added to his armamentarium and is very happy he did so.
For Dr Lipscomb, who has been in private practice in Maryland for close to 3 decades, using Hemaseal & Cide Desensitizer is now a given, as he’s found it
to deliver strong disinfection of preparations and a reduction of microleakage. The tissue-friendly desensitizer also provides enhanced and prolonged bond strength. “Before I was using this product, I wasn’t using anything. I was mainly looking for something to do with the prep before seating the temporary restoration on, then when the permanent restoration came in, I wanted to put something on that prep that would disinfect and clean the prep to get ready for the permanent cementation on the restoration,” Dr Lipscomb says.
Product Benefits “The thing I like about it is it does a lot, and you don’t have to do a lot,” he says. “That’s the key.” Hemaseal & Cide with 4% chlorhexidine is formulated to eliminate postoperative sensitivity—precluding the need to do remakes. The material does not have to be cured and can easily be applied with a Microbrush, so it’s easy for clinicians to use.
Hemaseal & Cide Desensitizer
Hemaseal & Cide with 4% chlorhexidine is formulated to eliminate postoperative sensitivity—precluding the need to do remakes. This desensitizer is said to deliver superior disinfection of preparations and a reduction of microleakage. Chlorhexidine has been shown to prolong bonds to dentin, so using Hemaseal & Cide enhances and prolongs the bond strength. This product was the only one shown to improve bond strength with self-etch and total-etch products in a published study of 9 desensitizers (study available upon request). Unlike some desensitizers, Hemaseal & Cide is soft-tissue friendly, and the bulk bottle is designed for ease of use.
For Dr Lipscomb, using Hemaseal & Cide is “just a better way” for preparing his prep for cementation every time he takes on a crown and bridge case and every time he delivers a filling. “I use it every day. The biggest thing is it’s so easy to use,” he says. “I have to be honest; I know there are other products out there I haven’t used, [but] I just know that some of [the] products [are] not so kind to the soft tissue. With some of those things, you have to use 2 different products to do the job…. So that’s another reason why I like it. You’ve got so many things going for it, and to use it is just so easy.”
Although his patients may not understand all the science behind a product like the Hemaseal & Cide Desensitizer, they appreciate a reduction in sensitivity and want their restorations to stay put, whether it’s a filling, a temporary, or crown.
As a member of the Catapult Education team, Dr Lipscomb strives to inform more dentists of the benefits of using the Hemaseal & Cide Desensitizer. “One of my courses is on prepping and soft tissue management, and I talk about this product because I think it’s important,” he says. “A lot of people don’t know about it, so I get a chance to bring it to light [and] share what I like about the product.”
Why Recommend to a Colleague? There are so many restorative materials and new products on the market that clinicians should consider giving a try, but as previously stated, Dr Lipscomb thinks too many aren’t giving the proper attention to working with a product that enhances the whole cementation process.
“I don’t know [whether] a lot of doctors are doing anything to their preps, especially when it comes to cementation, if they haven’t heard about this product,” he says. “But it’s a good product. It’s very simple. Whenever I have a chance to talk, especially about crown and bridge, I say this product is worth a try. That’s the only thing you can hope for as a manufacturer—just get it in the doctor’s hands, then let the product speak for itself.”
Because of the results he gets, Dr Lipscomb believes the product is worth a try. “I’m using it with everything. Anything we’re bonding to and want to get a clean tooth surface, I use it. For me, it’s been steady, and it’s delivered every time I’ve used it.”
