A roundup of several bioactive materials available today.
Bioactive materials have enabled clinicians to repair and regenerate dental tissues.1 These materials are largely used for pulp protection and cementation of indirect restorations.1 “Bioactivity” refers to a material’s ability to promote a biological response when it comes in contact with living tissue.1
The phrase “bioactive material” was created in 1969 by Dr Larry Hench, inventor of Bioglass, the first man-made material to bond to living tissues.2 Dr Hench was looking for an improved graft material for bone reconstruction during the Vietnam War—specificially a material that would bond to living tissue and would not be rejected by the body.2
Historically, dental materials were designed to have a ‘neutral’ effect on the tooth.2 However, many modern materials are considered “active” participants in the restorative process.2 Materials that are considered to be bioactive can display 1 or more of the following actions:2
This month, we’ve rounded up several of the bioactive materials that are available to you today.

Riva Light Cure is a light cured resin-reinforced glass ionomer restorative material which releases fluoride and chemically bond to the tooth structure whilst composites have excellent esthetics. Riva Light Cure utilizes SDI’s proprietary ionglass™ filler developed by our glass technologists. ionglass is a radiopaque, high ion releasing, bioactive glass used in SDI’s range of glass ionomer products. Often being used in the aesthetic zone, Riva Light Cure offers high color stability and has excellent resistance to common stains such as black tea and red wine. Riva Light Cure absorbs about half as much color from these tannin-rich solutions.
Shofu’s Beautifil II Gingiva is a nano-hybrid universal composite offered in 5 unique pink shades that can be blended and layered to produce custom shades. Containing Shofu’s proprietary Bioactive Giomer Technology, Beautifil II Gingiva provides the clinically proven therapeutic properties of acid neutralization and bacterial reduction, which may improve tissue response and periodontal health. By using gingival shaded composites instead of “white” shades, dentists can offer patients esthetic treatment options for improving gingival symmetry, repairing recession, disguising exposed C&B margins, and implant abutments. It is available in 2.5g syringes in dark pink, light pink, brown, orange, and violet.
Calibra Bio Cement’s bioactive chemistry works naturally within the oral environment to form a self-repairing layer of hydroxyapatite for improved marginal integrity by minimizing microleakage. And its unique calcium aluminate ionomer chemistry, combining calcium aluminate and glass ionomers, delivers seamless adaptation towards the tooth structure. There is no priming or bonding agent needed and Calibra Bio features good flowability and consistency with low expansion and no shrinkage. It’s said to work well with zirconia and features good retentive strength comparable to self-adhesive resin cements.
BC Liner is dual cure and is designed to bridge the gap between pure calcium silicate-based bioceramics and more user-friendly, light-curable bioactive restorative materials. EndoSequence BC Liner is a first-generation bioactive hybrid resin optimized for use with BC Sealer and BC RRM (Root Repair Material). This versatile and durable material chemically bonds to dentin without the need for a bonding agent. The unique, moisture-friendly chemistry seals teeth against microleakage and continuously releases and recharges calcium, phosphate, and fluoride ions for a lasting biological benefit. BC Liner provides optimal protection for your root canal therapy. BC Liner’s novel formulation provides a compressive strength of 241 MPa and flexural strength of 99.2 MPa.
NeoPUTTY is a premixed bioactive bioceramic MTA that triggers hydroxyapatite and supports healing using the same tri and dicalcium silicate powders as NeoMTA 2. Its firm, non-tacky consistency, wash-out resistance, and bioactivity make it pediatric dentists' preferred material for every pulp need. NeoPUTTY delivers a ready-to-use material for immediate placement with zero waste, saving cost and chair time. Its firm, low-tack putty is said to make placement easier and quicker and features high pH to promote osteogenic response without discoloring teeth.
ACTIVA BioACTIVE-RESTORATIVE is a highly esthetic, bioactive composite that delivers all the advantages of glass ionomers in a strong, resilient, resin matrix that will not chip or crumble. It chemically bonds to teeth, seals against microleakage, releases more, calcium, phosphate, and fluoride, and it is said to be more bioactive than glass ionomers and more durable and fracture resistant than composites. ACTIVA is said to be the first bioactive composite with an ionic resin matrix, a shock-absorbing resin component, and bioactive fillers that mimic the physical and chemical properties of natural teeth. It releases and recharges with calcium, phosphate, and fluoride ions, delivering long-term benefits and better oral health care for your patients. ACTIVA contains no Bisphenol A, no Bis-GMA, and no BPA derivatives.
Ceramir Restore QuikCap is a resin-free and self-curing bioceramic restorative material. By combining a conventional glass ionomer with Ceramir technology, a tissue-friendly and bioactive material is achieved. It can be used in the same indications as conventional glass ionomer restoratives but with the added benefit of lower acid solubility, better chemical integration with teeth, and beneficial mineralization properties. The continuous release of calcium and fluoride ions combined with a unique level of biocompatibility make this product especially well-suited for use in pediatric and geriatric dentistry.
Biodentine is a tricalcium silicate-based material designed to be a permanent dentin substitute. It is bioactive and biocompatible. Biodentine features a shorter setting time; a high pH of >11 that is said to last for 72 hours and includes antibacterial properties; and a high resistance to microleakage that is said to reduce the risk of secondary caries. It’s formulated to provide excellent marginal adaptation and offers great handling properties with a creamy consistency with ease of placement.
Predicta Bioactive Desensitizer treats dentin hypersensitivity by using the elements naturally found in the tooth, (calcium and phosphate) and restoring them to the tooth as hydroxyapatite plugs that immediately start forming in the dentinal tubules.
Building on the success of EQUIA Forte, the new EQUIA Forte HT is a long-term restorative system with enhanced mechanical properties, superior fluoride release, improved translucency, and a sound marginal seal. This makes EQUIA Forte HT a versatile, cost-effective, and durable restorative solution. The new glass hybrid innovation was achieved through the introduction of ultra-fine highly reactive glass and high-molecular-weight polyacrylic acid powder within conventional glass which ensures advanced mechanical properties with improved flow and non-sticky handling. The nano-filled, self-adhesive resin, EQUIA Forte Coat, ensures optimized marginal seal and wear resistance. Also, EQUIA Forte Coat is now available in an ergonomic flip-top bottle that minimizes waste. The result is a strong restorative with prolonged working time and superb handling that is excellent for bulk-fill placement, even in load-bearing Class II restorations.
