Kuraray Noritake Dental’s new PANAVIA™ Veneer LC follows in the footsteps of other PANAVIA dental cements that have been providing great results for this clinician.
Impressed by the track record of previous PANAVIA™ cements, Karyn Halpern, DMD, MS, had little doubt she’d like Kuraray Noritake Dental’s new PANAVIA Veneer LC once she got the material in her hands. Even so, she was surprised about just how well it bonded and how easy it was to use.
Often asked to test out dental materials, the general dentist from Port Jefferson Station, New York, first tried out the new light-cure resin cement for veneers a few months before it was available to all clinicians. She greeted the opportunity with excitement and was not let down by the results.
“I’ve had great success with their other cements that I already use, so I was excited when I heard they were coming out with a veneer cement. Of course, based on their history, I was confident it was going to be along the lines of the level that I was looking for,” says Dr Halpern, whose multidisciplinary practice performs plenty of restorations in a single appointment.
For a veneer cement, you’re looking for the ideal consistency, and you want the material to stay where you put it, she explains. Ease of use, because of the steps that are involved, is also key. Veneers in general are very technique sensitive and can bring a lot of stress.
“So if [you have] a cement where the steps are easy to follow, and it feels easy to manipulate, and then it’s easy to clean up, you’re going to be happy,” she says. “Part of the battle with veneers is cleaning up the excess. PANAVIA Veneer LC has checked all the boxes.”
Kuraray’s history of solid cement products is well known, and Dr Halpern is just one of many clinicians who have used PANAVIA products with great success. That said, the new veneer cement has yet to establish longevity standards because it’s a new product. Dr Halpern, however, expects continued success from this material and would recommend colleagues give it a try.
“I love Kuraray Noritake products. They’re very well known for their dental adhesive technology. They have a lot of materials that I use for different purposes in my practice,” she says. “The challenge when deciding whether you’re going to start to use a new product is obviously you don’t have the luxury of longevity yet. It’s always a bit of balancing when you risk wanting to try something new.
“With this product, for me, since I’ve already used their other cements with great experiences, I felt that I had confidence in the company that’s producing this cement, so that gives me less anxiety to try it. Unfortunately, we don’t know yet how long it will last.”
PANAVIA™ Veneer LC
Kuraray Noritake Dental’s PANAVIA™ Veneer LC is a new light-cure resin cement indicated for permanent cementation of esthetic veneers and inlays/onlays less than 2 mm thick. PANAVIA is formulated to offer color stability, wear resistance, and relatively easy cleanup. PANAVIA’s application tip is designed with nanocluster filler technology, consisting of spherical silica fillers to offer the amount of control necessary when seating veneers. It is available in 4 polishable shades.
One early experience only increased Dr Halpern’s confidence in the new veneer cement. A new patient presented with an anterior veneer that was placed by his previous dentist that had debonded and come off repeatedly.
“It came off several times, and he had to keep going back to the dentist to replace it and get it recemented, so he was frustrated,” Dr Halpern says.
After examination, she noticed that because it had been cemented several times, the fit itself was compromised and there was a lot of labial erosion behind the tooth itself, so it wasn’t really sitting properly. The patient agreed to have the veneer replaced, but in the meantime, Dr Halpern wanted him to keep it in his mouth for the duration until he returned to her practice to replace the veneers.
“I had just gotten this new veneer cement in the office, and while you don’t usually have that luxury where you want to take [veneer] off later, in this case I could see how well it stays put. This was an opportunity where you have low expectations.”
The patient returned 2 months later for the new veneers and not only had the old one stayed put, but Dr Halpern had a hard time removing it.
“With a restoration that has been bonded several times and reglued several times, it’s usually not that challenging to remove with a bur,” she says. “But this was on. I had to shave every little piece of ceramic to get it off. It really gave me a clinical impression of how well it was on, of how strong this adhesive truly is. After that, I became a big fan.”
The patient, who had been warned that the old veneer might continue to fall off and would require more visits to the office, was very happy with fact that the PANAVIA Veneer LC stood up to the task.
Another plus of the material is its easy application.
“I would absolutely recommend for any of my colleagues to try this cement,” she summarizes. “I’ve had only positive experiences thus far.”
