Coping with high gold prices

Ah, the good ‘ole PFM: the staple of fixed prosthetics since the 1960s. Even in this new age of all-ceramic restorations, gold alloys are still used in a significant percentage of the cases done in most labs. IdentAlloy/IdentCeram, which certifies materials used in dental restorations, reports that in 2008 high-noble and noble alloy certificates comprised 69% of the certificates shipped by the organization. Final figures for 2009 are not available yet, however early indications are that this figure will be down but not as much as you might think.

Zest Anchors Inc. bought by Jordan Company LP

A recent article published on the Web site of Buyouts magazine announced the purchase of Zest Anchors Inc. of Escondido, Calif. by the Jordan Company LP. Zest Anchors is a leading manufacturer of attachments used to secure dentures and implant retained overdentures. According to the article, Jordan Company purchased a majority stake while Zuest and other shareholders retain a 25 percent stake. Equity for the investment will come out of The Resolute Fund II LP, according to a regulatory filing. The deal closed Dec. 31.

Vident holds denture courses

Participants recently traveled to Vancouver and Vident's home office in Brea, Calif. to attend hands-on denture courses taught by Dennis Purinton, CDT. Attendees learned to demonstrate proper articulation techniques focusing on mandibular denture stability and lingualized occlusion. Using available information, such as landmarks of the mouth, facial shape and gender, participants completed one denture set up with VITA Physiodens Anterior and Lingoform upper and lower posterior teeth.

We are concerned about our businesses, the welfare of our employees, as well as our own welfare as we wait for things to turn around. The experts tell us the upturn is coming, but I doubt that you, like me, have seen many positive economic signs. I was told recently that economic trends hit the dental industry about six months after they hit other industries, so it looks like we may have a ways to go. Think about the points below as you continue to manage through our current economic downturn.
