From dental instruments to dental composites, here's what you missed this week.

The Tech Census Survey suggests that while the majority of dentists are using dental lasers in their practices, there's still a notable few that don't see the technology bringing value to their workflow.

Out of the 63 respondents, 60% said they are already using a dental laser in their practice. Eighty-one percent of those are diode lasers.

Interestingly, 22% of the respondents who don't have a laser said it's not a good fit for their practice.

Out of 59 total respondents, 42% of them said they are currently using a high-tech caries detection device in their practice, while 50% of them also said they have an oral cancer screening device.

Dental Products: What's Hot Summer 2012

	On July 6th, a segment called "Who's Hiring Now" aired on ABC's daytime talk show "

." The segment was geared towards examining the current state of the U.S. job market, featuring a special analysis from guest panelist and financial expert Regina Lewis.

	After a long discussion about current industries that are not hiring, Lewis proceeded to discuss careers that do not require college degrees. Dental hygienists, she said, is a good example of a career option for those who have not completed college.

	She went on to say, "I only care if you know how to use this tool on that tooth, right?" "It doesn't matter what degree you have. That's an example of a job that you want to have a very specific accreditation to get that job."

	During the segment, it was also reported that the average annual salary for dental hygienists is $45,000.

	Dental hygienists soon took to Twitter and Facebook to sound off against the information that was shared.

	One Facebook user, KellyJ0118, wrote the following comment on the 

"This is very offensive to all of us LDH and RDH across the nation. I worked very hard for my degree in dental hygiene and have the student loans to prove it. I do so much more than "clean" teeth, and can not believe she went on air with this absurd information with out knowing the education required. I know that the ADHA will be contacting the show about this mistake and I hope that a public apology will be soon to come." 

	Another Facebook user, NitraRDH, responded with the following comment:

"Registered Dental Hygienist is a 2 yr college accredited program with 1 year of prerequisites. Depending on the school- one gets a certificate after 3 years of education or a college degree. Either way- you don't just pick up an instrument and start cleaning teeth as Regina puts it." 

 wasted no time in responding to the show's claims. The group released a press release stating that it had sent a letter to ABC to set the record straight. In that letter, it stated the following key information:

		There are 334 entry-level dental hygiene programs in the U.S.

		There are also 20 programs that offer either a master’s degree in dental hygiene or related health sciences

		According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median salary of dental hygienists in 2010 was $68,250 annually

Hygienists sound off on The View's false claims about the profession

In light of the recent investigative film that examined the flaws in the dental care system, dental professionals from across the country have expressed mixed reactions. 

The coverage has sparked deep reactions from members of the dental community, as well as from consumers. Let's face it-The issue facing the nation's underprivileged children concerning dental care is becoming a crisis; and one that provokes an outpouring of varying perspectives and problem-solving theories.

It is estimated that more than 100 million Americans forego going to the dentist because they can’t afford it, which is one factor that led producers to want to do the documentary. 

“The issue of underserved minority populations is a huge one,” said Randy Barrett, Communications Director for the Center for Public Integrity. “We felt it was a compelling story and we wanted to dig into it.”

The film aired just two days before the Supreme Court would announce its decision to rule the 

that the ACA requires insurers to offer dental care for children but not adults, funds national public education programs on preventing oral diseases, and asks for additional funding to expand access to care for people who live in an area with a shortage of dental care providers.

 that it "applauds PBS’s FRONTLINEfor its special, ‘'Dollars and Dentists,'’ a program addressing the “broken nature” of the current dental care system in the United States. The program highlighted the significant obstacles many Americans face in accessing oral health care – a shortage of dentists in many parts of the country and the high cost of dental treatment.  that although they appreciated the growing media interest in oral disease, but regrets that FRONTLINE chose to title its program ""Dollars and Dentists" and devoted so much time to cover the debate over allowing so-called "dental therapists" with as little as 18 months post-high school training to perform surgical procedures like extractions."

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry

 that it commends FRONTLINE and the Center for Public Integrity for shining a light on the importance of dental care by airing its joint investigation of the nation's ruptured dental care system and bringing appropriate attention to America's dental care crisis. While the program showcased the extreme difficulties millions of Americans - including children with government-provided insurance - experience seeking dental care, it's important to note that pediatric dentists have been consistent advocates for improvements in the system, which will result in better access to care. Pediatric dentists speak from experience as they disproportionately treat our country's most vulnerable children, including those on public insurance.

Diamonds: a clinician's best friend

Michael Clair, who had a practice in Fall River, MA, was sentenced to one year in jail for defrauding Medicaid of $130,000, assault and battery, illegally prescribing prescription drugs and witness intimidation charges. The former dentist used sections of paper clips instead of stainless steel posts in root canals in an effort to save money.

This guy should have been clipping coupons, not root canals.

In 2009, Gary "Doc" Kimmel, a well-respected and talented dentist from Chicago, was sentenced to three years and one month in prison for laundering money for a Detroit pimp who used Kimmel's apartment and cars in a prostitution ring. He even performed dental services for a prostitute who had her teeth knocked out. Kimmel didn't serve the entire sentence and was released back in December. Now, he wants to rejoin the dental business.

Kimmel's lawyer Joseph Lopez reportedly told the Sun-Times that the only real allegation having to do with his work as a dentist is involving one prostitute.

“Her teeth got knocked out, he was trying to help her." "They need dentists just like everyone else needs dentists," said Lopez.

Dr. Michael Hammonds, Deltona, FL, took an elderly woman's dentures from her and then refused to give them back. Virginia Graham was experiencing problems with her dentures so she went to see her dentist. Confrontation ensued. Grandma threw her dentures at Hammonds after he refused to giver her a refund. The brawl escalated and made its way down the hallway of the office. Virginia bit Hammonds's hand to make him let go of the teeth. No such luck. Hammonds wasn't giving in. He even blocked the door so she couldn't escape and grabbed her arms to prevent her from opening the door.

Hammonds was later arrested on charges of false imprisonment, battery and assault on a person older than 65, and grand theft.

While Virginia searches for a new dentist and new teeth, Hammonds searches for his dignity.

In May 2011 Jason Roan, a Helena, MT dentist, reportedly met a woman through an online dating website and later committed non-consensual sexual acts during intercourse with her. Roan was given a three year deferred sentence and he must also serve 40 hours of community service in the dental field.

Just last week Charles Kokoska, a dentist from Millsboro, PA, was arrested for prescribing 6,600 narcotic painkillers to seven patients.

According to the criminal complaint, Kokoska wrote the prescriptions for oxycodone, hydrocodone, propoxyphene and diazepam, a generic form of Xanax, between January 2009 and October 2010.

Mena, AR dentist David Van Winkle was charged with kidnapping, burglary and stalking in connection with an incident that happened at his victim's home. He allegedly abducted a woman at gunpoint. Last September, his bond was cut in half as long as he wore a leg monitor.

Customize your care

Devlin Limbach, a photographer from Lincoln, NE, gives ordinary dental instruments new, vibrant identities. In one of his photos, the green and blue bristles of a toothbrush resemble an elaborate maze that requires precise navigation. Placed at a different angle, that same toothbrush takes on a stage-like appearance with a blue and green curtain.

Limbach's photograph of dental floss and a toothbrush has a distinct look similar to the likes of Andy Warhol.

"Most of my photographs are done using the camera," says Limbach. "Some are 2 or 3 of the same image overlayed on top of each other. Every photographer tries to find his or her own niche with images. I enjoy taking photos of dental items and finding a way to help put them in a more fun perspective different from how they are normally perceived. I have taken on the challenge of taking a normal everyday item and turning it into a whole new vision for dentists and hygienists."

Limbach began taking photos of dental and dental hygiene instruments for the University of Nebraska Center (UNMC) Dental Hygiene Department. Ryan D. Rutar, a student in the Dental Hygiene program and Limbach's partner, first introduced the instruments to Limbach.

"Ryan brought home his instruments and I was inspired to photograph at different angles, use different lighting, and combine different tools together to get the desired pictures," says Limbach. "I tried pushing the boundaries with the images by using techniques I had never used before and never knew were possible until I saw the outcome."

Rutar was a member of the Student American Dental Hygienist Association and the organization hired Limbach to donate his photos to the newly renovated hygiene clinic, where dental and hygiene students see them on the walls every day.

"I have sold photos to dentists in St. Louis, MO and Lincoln, NE," says Limbach. "The president of the ADHA requested a personal signed copy of one of my photographs at the NDHA Annual Session and I also donated a few framed photos to be raffled off at the ADHA Annual Session to help raise money for the Institute of Oral Health."

Dental instrument visionary

	Gov. Pat Quinn today visited the University of Illinois at Chicago to announce a $2.8 capital grant that will help the College of Dentistry receive an emergency generator, as well as a new fire alarm and sprinkler systems. The project will also result in new lighting systems, windows and elevators.

	"It's important to have healthy teeth," said Gov. Quinn." "I want to salute all the students, teachers and staff here at UIC. This institution provides top notch dental care across Illinois and this will enable the structures to become 21st century-ready."

	The Capital Development Board (CDB), which administers all state-funded, non-road construction projects in Illinois, will facilitate the project. Construction is expected to begin next year.

	The improvements will also bode more sustainable buildings for the dental school.

	"The facilities will be more sustainable," said Gov. Quinn. "We're not just going to paint them green. Graduates from this college are among the top recruited for employment across the country and as long as I am governor, we are not cutting back on brain power. As long as grass grows and the water flows, this school will produce positive, good things."

Gov. Quinn announces UIC grant

	Dr. Dan Greenstein has been making those who work in saliva laugh since 1989.

	The GP from Boca Raton, FL saw his stand-up career take off after gaining exposure from television's America's Funniest People.

	"I was a winner on America's Funniest People in 1991, which led to a lot of local publicity in the local newspapers, including the Miami Herald," explains Greenstein.

	Greenstein was approached by a local dentist about performing at a Black Tie Dinner in Miami. One thing led to another and he eventually found himself being asked to do stand-up at the meetings of several dentists in the area.

	"This led to me performing for the Profitable Dentist Newsletter Spring Break Seminars for five years in a row," says Greenstein.

	In 1992, Greenstein was a finalist in COLGATE's Search for America's Funniest People. He continued to perform at local comedy clubs and also for state, local and national dental meetings from coast to coast.

	"I've performed from Bangor, ME to Anchorage, AK to Wyoming and Nebraska," says Greenstein. "I was recently in Canton, OH and Geneva, IL for a repeat performance for the Fox River Valley Dental Society."

	Greenstein was a guest on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" for his CD entitled "Spit Happens!" in 2003.

	The American Dental Association (ADA) is hosting the 2011 Conference on Dentist Health and Wellness to provide dentists and their staff with tips to maintain, improve or enhance their quality of life inside or outside of the office.  
	
	The nationally-recognized conference is scheduled for Aug. 18-19 at ADA Headquarters, 211 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago, Ill. The conference has continually expanded its scope to provide attendees with the latest research and techniques to keep pace with increased awareness of the health and wellness of not only the dentist and the dental team but their patients as well.
	
	Attendees have the option of taking courses that provide tips on general health and ergonomics or courses geared to working with dentists who have impairments and the current education, prevention and treatment of impaired dentists and/or patients.
	
	The purpose of the conference is to bring together dentists, spouses, dental team members, dental students and professionals who work with dentists and connect them with national experts who can discuss and provide key information on health and wellness issues.
