Two clinical studies conducted by separate research institutions concluded that 

 offers a substantial reduction in dentine hypersensitivity for an extended period of time.

The first study, conducted by J.L. Milleman and others at 

, employed a randomized, double-blind, single-site, three-arm parallel method to ascertain the effectiveness of paste containing calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS, the primary ingredient of NovaMin) with and without fluoride. Following scaling and root planning, the researchers found that a single application of both non-fluorinated and fluorinated CSPS offered a significant reduction in dentine hypersensitivity for at least 28 days.

 in October 2012 investigated the reduction in dentine hypersensitivity after a single application of NUPRO Sensodyne paste to a standard prophy paste following dental scaling and root planning.  After comparing the two pastes, the results indicated that both fluorinated and non-fluorinated NUPRO pastes relieve dentin hypersensitivity for up to four weeks after a single application.

 co-founder Joan Austin, a widely revered business leader, innovator, community activist, and philanthropist.

A-dec, the largest privately owned dental equipment manufacturer in the United States, was founded by Joan and her husband Ken in 1964.  For nearly 50 years, Joan was involved in the company’s personnel, administrative, philanthropic, financial, and legal operations.  A-dec currently employs more than 1000 people and markets its dental products to dental professionals in more than 100 countries across the globe.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Joan,” said Scott Parrish, Joan’s son-in-law and A-dec President and CEO. “Aside from Joan's dedication, breadth of experience, rich insight and business acumen, it’s her enormous capacity to give that will create the greatest void.”

Born Joan Zemke on September 25, 1931 in Glenwood, Minnesota, Austin graduated from Union High School in 1948 and holds several honorary degrees and awards.  In addition to her work at A-dec, Joan served as president of Austin Industries and Springbrook Properties. She also was a board member of the Oregon Business Council, a lifetime trustee of the Oregon State University Foundation and served as a trustee of Linfield College from 1982 to 2006.  Additionally, Joan holds the distinction of being the first woman to chair the Board of Directors for Associated Oregon Industries.

Joan is survived by her husband Ken Austin, son G. Kenneth Austin (Celia), daughter Loni Parrish (Scott), and five grandchildren.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in the memory of Joan D. Austin.

, drinking large quantities of soda erodes teeth much in the same way as consuming illegal drugs does. 

This is very bad news given our country’s penchant for carbonated soft drinks: according to a 

, nearly 50% of Americans report drinking at least one glass of soda a day, while an additional 20% say they usually drink two or more.

The study examined the damage in three people’s mouths: a one-time habitual cocaine user, a habitual user of methamphetamine, and an excessive soda drinker.  Although the participants disclosed to poor oral hygiene and lack of regular dental care, researchers discovered quantitatively similar amounts of tooth erosion in each participant, both in terms of type and severity.

Teeth erode after acid deteriorates the enamel, the semi-translucent protective layer of the tooth.  Once it wears away, teeth become more susceptible to caries, cavities, cracking, and discoloration.  Both soda and the drugs used by the participants include corrosive materials.

Tooth erosion doesn't need to be a life sentence for your patients.  Check out these two remineralizing products to bolster their enamel and strengthen their teeth.

“Each person experienced severe tooth erosion caused by the high acid levels present in their ‘drug’ of choice-meth, crack, or soda,” said Mohamed A. Bassiouny, DMD, MSc, PhD, who lead the study. “The citric acid present in both regular and diet soda is known to have a high potential for causing tooth erosion. The striking similarities found in this study should be a wake-up call to consumers who think that soda-even diet soda-is not harmful to their oral health.”

"The woman referenced in this article did not receive dental health services for more than 20 years - two-thirds of her life. To single out diet soda consumption as the unique factor in her tooth decay and erosion - and to compare it to that from illicit drug use - is irresponsible.”

Nevertheless, AGD spokesman Eugene Antenucci notes that dentists should still recommend to their patients that they limit the amount of soda they drink, opting for water instead.

According to a new study published in General Dentistry, a peer-reviewed clinical journal published by the Academy of General Dentistry, drinking large quantities of soda erodes teeth much in the same way as consuming illegal drugs does.
