	A recent report confirms scientists have created a new biocompatible material that may rebuild worn enamel and decrease tooth sensitivity for longer periods of time than current materials on the market.

	Tooth sensitivity, a common dental problem, often occurs as enamel degrades, exposing small, porous material called dentine. This material contains tiny tubes that expose underlying nerves to heat and cold.

, and other researchers tested the new biocompatible material, containing calcium and phosphorus, on dogs and found it plugged the tubes more deeply and was more durable than current treatments, such as special toothpastes. They describe the deep plugging as a "biomimetic crystalline dentin barrier."

	Studies of the dogs'; teeth determined significant crystal growth and no pulp irritation after 70 days, researchers said, adding the material is promising for human treatment.

Commonly known as laughing gas, and often used as a pain and anxiety reliver during dental procedures, nitrous oxide, according to the 

, is a tasteless, odorless anesthetic and analgesic. While it will not completely alleviate pain, it may reduce stress during birth in women who choose not to receive an epidural.

Sixteen women have opted for the gas since it became available earlier this year, according to Mountain Midwifery Center. The availability of nitrous oxide aligns with the center's philosophy of freedom of movement, i.e. walking, sitting on a yoga ball or birthing stool, kneeling on the bed, hanging on a partner or birth rope and other positions, during labor.

, they discovered the byproducts of bacteria in gum disease, called metabolic small chain fatty acid (SCFA), can work together to activate HIV in dormant T-cells, causing the virus to replicate.

The findings help explain why people with HIV infections and periodontal disease have higher levels of the virus in their saliva than patients with healthy gums. The researchers, 

, think byproducts from other bacteria infections in other diseases might change gene expression using similar mechanisms.

The researchers explained humans have a reservoir of resting T-cells that activate and respond to inflammation to ward off an infection in the body. HIV antiviral therapy prevents active HIV cells from replicating and doesn't affect the quiet viruses in sleeping T-cells. As long as the patient is free of gum disease, the virus sleeps and remains dormant.
