	United States Navy Captain Jonathan Forsberg, MD, Ph.D., will kick off the opening symposium. His presentation “What Have We Learned in Orthopedic Osseointegration?” will feature the work of the DoD Osseointegration Program and the correlations of osseointegration between the dental application and extremity surgery. Dr. Forsberg is an orthopedic oncologist and director of the DoD Osseointegration Program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and serves as assistant professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins University, where he provides surgical care at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital.

	Reflective of AO’s fundamental multidisciplinary composition, the Friday program will include day-long surgical and prosthetic tracks. All sessions will assemble the foremost authorities in evidence-based research and clinical practice who are on the cutting-edge of scientific discovery in implant dentistry from around the world. In addition, there will be dedicated programs for allied staff and laboratory technicians.

	For an additional registration fee, scientific content of the annual meeting can also include a choice of six hands-on workshops and two pre-conference sessions, all of which will take place on Wednesday, March 13. Registration now open for AO's 2019 annual meeting

	Dental professionals on the leading edge of evidence-based dentistry who are interested in research grant funding can now submit an application for the Osseointegration Foundation’s (OF) 2019-2020 Research Grants program.

	Funded by OF, the philanthropic arm of AO, two 

 will be awarded this year. The AO/OF Research Grant Committee will review all applications and award $30,000 to the best proposals in the following categories:

		Basic science: Research to advance implant knowledge that doesn't include human subjects.

		Applied science: Research to advance clinical implant dentistry that does include human subjects.

	To qualify, research grant applications must be submitted by an AO member, faculty member, or student who conducts research in any academic dental institution (with at least one person on the research team an AO member). Applications that address areas of research to enhance public acceptance of implants are welcome and encouraged.

Applicants will be informed of acceptance of their proposals in March 2019 via email. First place awardees will be required to present their research at AO’s 35th Annual Meeting (to be held March 19–21, 2020 in Seattle). In addition, all awardees must submit a manuscript to the International

 (JOMI), AO’s official scientific journal, no later than Dec. 31, 2020.

	Student and professional researchers have until Oct. 5, 2018, to submit their abstracts of original research and clinical cases of interest in the field of implant dentistry for the Academy of Osseointegration’s (AO) 2019 Annual Meeting.

As part of the call for abstracts, the Osseointegration Foundation (OF) will be awarding 20 $1,000 Student Travel Grants via its Student Travel Grant Program. These grants will be awarded to recipients of the top scoring oral research and E-poster abstracts submitted for the 2019 AO Annual Meeting. This award is open to both AO student members and student non-members who submit an abstract for the 2019 meeting and are currently enrolled in a dental school program. Student abstracts must be submitted via

. Only authors indicating their interest via the abstract submission site will be considered for a Student Travel Grant.

	The grants will be allocated toward travel expenses related to attending the AO Annual Meeting, including airfare, hotel and ground transportation. All recipients must be present at AO’s 2019 Annual Meeting to receive their grant. Those receiving a Student Travel Grant may still be considered for the Best Abstract and Best E-poster awards.

	Members of the AO Research Submissions and E-Poster committees will review and score the submitted abstracts to determine the best student and professional presentations based on the quality of the research and relevance to the field of Osseointegration.

AO accepting research abstracts for 2019 Annual Meeting

	Heralding the home of the first modern root form dental implant placed and restored in the United States, the Academy of Osseointegration’s (AO) Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting will be held in National Harbor, Maryland, Sept. 14-15, 2018.

	“Advances in Clinical Implant Dentistry” will focus on various disciplines within implant dentistry, including the latest in surgical, restorative and laboratory techniques. The Gaylord National Resort, one of the most elegant convention centers along the Eastern seaboard of the United States, will provide the backdrop for this historic meeting with its picturesque views of Washington, D.C., and old-town Alexandria from the shores of the Potomac River.

	The two-day program, featuring AO member presenters from the U.S. mid-Atlantic region, will include:

		Dr. Joseph P. Fiorellini, an AO director, who has served as head of the division of periodontology and post-graduate program director of periodontology at Harvard University and is currently chair of the department of periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, will provide a hands-on course titled “Socket Bone Grafting, with and without Biologic Modifiers.”

		Tony Prestipino, CDT, Alexandria, Virginia, a long-time, active AO member and master laboratory technician in the Washington, D.C., area, will provide a review and hands-on course titled “Advanced Protocols for Converting Removable Dentures to Fixed Interim Prostheses: A review and hands-on course.”

		Dr. Eva Anadioti, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, director of the post-Ggraduate prosthodontics specialty program at the University of Pennsylvania, will provide a practical overview titled “Implant Overdenture: The Past, the Present and the Future.”

		Dr. Edgard El Chaar, New York City, director of the post[-graduate periodontics specialty program at New York University, will present “Innovative Strategies and Techniques in Ridge Augmentation.”

		Dr. Thomas Taylor, West Hartford, Connecticut, head of the department of prosthodontics and reconstructive sciences at the University of Connecticut, will address the topic, “Occlusion and Dental Implants: What Gives?”

		Dr. Maria Troulis is chair of the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital. Her presentation will be titled “Bone Tissue Engineering.”

More than 30 poster presentations showcasing the latest cutting-edge research in implant dentistry will also be on display at the meeting.

	AO members are highly encouraged to invite their colleagues to this meeting, which carries historical significance in the field of osseointegration and AO’s history. In May 1982, following a three-day symposium hosted by Dr. George A. Zarb and conducted by professor Per-Ingvar-Brånemark in Toronto, Canada, Dr. Paul H.J. Krogh, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon from Bethesda, Maryland, and his prosthodontic colleagues, Drs. Lloyd Vakay from Alexandria, Virginia, and his partner, Dr. Daniel Y. Sullivan from Washington, D.C., attended an intensive one-week training session in Sweden at the University of Göteborg, hosted by Dr. Brånemark. Two months following this training in October 1982, the trio became the first surgeons involved in the placement of titanium endosseous implants in four patients over two days, with Dr. Branemark placing the implants.

	This revolutionary time in the field of implant dentistry subsequently sparked four training centers across the United States and one in Canada, as well as the Osseointegration Study Group in New York in 1984, the organization which then formed the Academy of Osseointegration in March 1985. Drs. Krogh and Sullivan would become two of the Academy’s early presidents in 1989 and 1993, respectively.

	The mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting will also serve as the promotional launch of the much-anticipated AO annual global scientific Annual Meeting, to be held March 13–16, 2019, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in downtown Washington, D.C.

For the first time in its history, AO will be hosting its Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. 

Registration open for AO's 2018 Annual Meeting

	Dr. Takashi Sumi, Japanese ambassador of the Academy of Osseointegration (AO), earlier this month organized the second meeting of AO’s Japan Charter Chapter. The chapter’s inaugural event was held in 2015.

	The meeting was a great opportunity for Japanese dentists, technicians and hygienists, who are responsible for the next generation of implant therapy, to present their world-class treatment skills and technologies.

	The two-day conference, titled “AO – Into the Next Generation,” was divided into four sessions. These included managing anterior aesthetics, a surgical track, hard and soft tissue management, and digital solutions, which were comprised of 17 of the best speakers in Japan.

, including AO President Dr. Michael Norton and Dr. Stephen Jacobs, chair of AO’s Global Program Development Committee.

	“The meeting was a great success thanks to the dedication and hard work of AO Ambassador Dr. Takashi Sumi. The meeting focused on the younger generation of dentists and included two young hygienists who presented to the conference,” says Dr. Norton. “This was therefore a very forward thinking program. The quality of the lectures was of the highest standard with some superb clinical work on show through equally magnificent clinical photography and PowerPoint presentations.”

	“The purpose of this meeting was to help young dentists in Japan get to know AO. Under the umbrella of AO, top Japanese clinicians appealed to the nearly 360 attendees that science is necessary for medical treatment,” says Dr. Sumi. “It was obvious they were excited. I think the next meeting will be attended by many new members.”

	As part of the program Dr. Jacobs, who also serves on AO’s certificate and fellowship committee, presented “Good Morning with AO,” where he explained the new AO Certificate in Implant Dentistry and how members can apply. The AO Certificate is an award for members who can demonstrate knowledge, education and experience in implant dentistry. Dr. Jacobs explained how this honor is achievable for most AO members and how to go about it.

	Osseointegrated dental implants were first introduced to Japan in the 1980s. In the past three decades, scientific research and clinical applications of dental implants in Japan have shown amazing advancements.

	Today, more and more clinicians and researchers in implant therapy and tissue engineering are playing active roles in international scientific programs as speakers. Many of Japan’s young colleagues are also proactively joining overseas training courses, which is a good indicator of advancing internationalization in the area of dental implantology.

	Dr. Norton concludes, “Certainly, this meeting was worthy of being under the AO flag. I was also very encouraged by the enthusiasm in the room shown for AO’s 2018 Annual Meeting (to be held Feb. 28 to March 3, 2018, in Los Angeles). We look forward to welcoming many Japanese colleagues to LA!”

AO’s Japan Charter Chapter holds second meeting

	Initiated one year ago as a pilot project, the Greater Washington D.C. Academy of Osseointegration Study Club (GWDCAOSC) is celebrating its success of becoming a model AO program to facilitate local collaboration, education and networking.

Held on April 20, 2017, the study club’s recent one year anniversary meeting included a presentation by Steven Guttenberg, DDS, MD, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Dr. Guttenberg is the first clinician to incorporate Cone Beam CT Radiology in a private practice setting. 

	The GWDCAOSC is the culmination of a persistent, three-year effort of the 

 Membership Committee initiated under chairman Dr. Jeffrey Ackerman, who serves as the study club’s president. Other instrumental key organizers of this effort include Dr. Clarence Lindquist, former AO and Osseointegration Foundation (OF) president, and GWDCAOSC vice president and Dr. Douglas Dompkowski, vice-chair of the AO Membership Committee, who serves as treasurer.

	One of the major goals of GWDCAOSC is to allow AO members to utilize the organization’s myriad online resources as part of a study club curriculum. These include webinars, e-posters, education modules, recordings from annual meetings and articles from the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IJOMI). 

	The study club model also takes advantage of local AO experts to provide a curriculum for success and acts as an added membership value.  Given its extremely successful performance, it’s very likely this program will serve as a model to attract AO membership and be expanded to other parts of the country and the world. 

	 “The greater Washington D.C. area is rich in resources and there are so many world class local and visiting AO members who can present to the study club,” said Dr. Ackerman.

	However, he continued this level of success may not as easily be achieved in every locality. According to Dr. Mehrdad Favagehi, a local periodontist and secretary of this group, an online forum is proposed to be included as a core piece of the study club curriculum for all AO members and as a mechanism to help serve members in remote areas. Furthermore, he added the GWDCAOSC intends to utilize AO research submissions, e-posters and other online learning modules as part of its curriculum and to increase research, e-poster and innovations submissions by featuring selected submissions as part of the curriculum.

	The GWDCAOSC is an effort representative of AO’s roots, as it was founded 30 years ago as a local study club in the Greater New York area, said AO board member Dr. Jeffrey Lloyd, who serves as the study club’s liaison. “A level of independence from special interests and commercialization along with a strong commitment to science, education and collaboration among members, industry and other organizations has made the AO brand very appealing, and will allow AO to continue its growth as the world’s premier dental implant organization.”

	“A worldwide network of local AO-affiliated study clubs will ensure a bright future for AO and its members– and ultimately for the patients who will benefit from the gift of osseointegration,” he concluded. 

	Since its inaugural meeting on April 21, 2016 in McLean, Virginia, the GWDCAOSC has held seven meetings.  Future programming for 2017-2018 is scheduled to include presentations by Dr. Peter Hunt, Dr. Charles Fields, Dr. Vincent Prestipino, Dr. Clarence Lindquist, Dr. Brian Mahler, and Dr. Neil Starr, who recently presented at AO’s 2017 Annual Meeting.

Greater Washington Academy of Osseointegration Study Club commemorates first year of successful programming

	The meeting is being held March 15-18, 2017, in Orlando, Florida, and will be a collaboration with the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the American College of Prosthodontists

	The opening session is going to address the meeting theme very closely, relative to what clinicians do now versus 20 years ago. Dr. Jill Helms DDS, PhD, from Stanford University, will present “Beauty, Reconsidered.”

	The meeting will also feature an innovative session on “The Business of Implant Dentistry.” Moderated by Bill Ryan, it will look at various practice delivery systems.

	Dr. Ole Jensen will be moderating a session highlighting developments that have occurred since the AO Sinus Consensus Conference. This session will feature Alan Herford, Craig Misch, Paul Fugazzotto and Eric Dierks.

	The closing session will focus on the “team approach” to the treatment of various clinical problems. Several international teams will be presenting.

	The regional focus in 2017 will be Latin America.
