In an announcement just ahead of the Chicago Midwinter Meeting and LMT Lab Day dental shows, Ackuretta has introduced its latest innovation in digital dentistry. The SOL Plus, a state-of-the-art dental 3D printer, hopes to redefine high-volume precision printing, while the Tank Plus Kit complements the CLEANI dual tank wash system, designed to cater to the demands of advanced dental workflows.

The SOL Plus boasts an impressive large platform, capable of printing up to 28 full arches in a single vertical print or 8 full arches printed flat, according to a press release from the company. The monochrome LCD panel has an XY resolution of 45 microns and can print layers as thin as 30 microns—indicated for intricate dental applications. Keeping true to Ackuretta's commitment to open but validated workflows, SOL Plus is already compatible with industry-leading dental resins such as Ackuretta CURO, Argen, BEGO, Keystone, Pac-Dent, VOCO, and others.

Designed for user-friendly operation, the SOL Plus incorporates failsafe technology to ensure optimal printing conditions with every use and eliminate errors. The removable Thermal Agitator, a key feature in the SOL Plus, detects resin temperature in the vat, prompts users to heat the resin if necessary, and distributes heat evenly within the vat. With a rapid heating mechanism, the Thermal Agitator can elevate resin temperature by 10 degrees Fahrenheit in 2 minutes.

Additional features include a build platform lock, a tilting mechanism to conserve resin, and a sensor on the SOL Plus hood ensuring the hood is closed before printing, preventing unwanted resin curing in the vat.

Acknowledging the importance of customer support, SOL Plus comes with the Ackuretta Concierge Service, exclusively available in the United States and Canada. This service includes a 2-year warranty, remote onboarding, and training provided by the Ackuretta Customer Success Team, per the press release. Each customer receives personalized training, allowing them to commence 3D printing on the day the printer is unpacked.

In tandem with the SOL Plus, Ackuretta introduces the Tank Plus Kit, an addition to the CLEANI dual tank wash system. This innovative accessory is tailored to match the high production volume of SOL Plus, capable of washing up to 8 full arches in each cycle. Equipped with a mesh basket to reduce contact with IPA and a hydrometer indicating IPA cleanliness, the Tank Plus ensures a thorough and efficient cleaning process.

I don’t know about you, but I cringe when I hear the Ozempic (semaglutide) and other pharmaceutical jingles

When I’m watching cable TV, the commercial with the familiar Ozempic jingle pops up almost daily. I knew nothing about this medication until I decided to read about it. In my mind, I assumed it was another medication for type 2 diabetes, and I had no idea that is can also drive weight loss in some people.

In the first seven months of 2023, drug companies spent a whopping $500 million on advertisements for obesity and diabetes treatments. While widely used in treatment of type 2 diabetes, the weight loss potential of Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic is gaining traction, and publicity, with companies such as Optavia, Ro and WeightWatchers each launching a subscription program focused on health and nutrition needs of patients taking these or similar drugs called Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA).

What is a GLP-1RA and What are the Indications For Use?

GLP-1RA medications aren’t just a popular weight loss fad, but rather they are FDA-approved medications to treat obesity and other metabolic disorders like diabetes. Like other GLP-1Ras, Semaglutide—the specific medication in Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus brands—mimics a hormone that helps the body control blood sugar levels, suppresses appetite, and slows the body’s stomach emptying. This combination of outcomes can lead to weight loss in some patients. Clinical trials have found that GLP-1RA is associated with significant weight loss of up to 10-15% and it has been approved for the treatment of both type 2 diabetes and obesity.

The discovery, description, and clinical development of GLP-1 medications spans 30 years with contributions from multiple investigators.

 Experimental findings on incretins—AKA gut hormones—were designed to establish the biology of GLP-1 as an insulin-stimulating hormone.

 In 2017, the Harrington Prize for Innovative Medicine was awarded for the discovery of GLP-1 and the translation of these findings into transformative therapies for major metabolic changes like diabetes. Incretin hormones are secreted after nutrient intake and stimulate insulin secretion together with hyperglycemia. In diabetes, incretion effect is diminished.

GLP-1RAs are available as a monotherapy in injectable or oral dosage forms. The FDA has approved GLP-1RAs as a second line treatment option for better glycemic control in type 2 diabetes and it is still under scrutiny for anti-obesity purposes.

 Multiple clinical trials have shown GLP-1RAs reduce cardiovascular risks in patients with diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), or high cardiovascular risk independent of HbA1C. All of the currently available GLP-1RA medications have effects on cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension.

 The American Diabetes Association guidelines recommend using GLP-1RA for patients with established ASCVD or indicators of high ASCVD risk independent of A1C levels.

Cost, however, is one major barrier to patients accessing GLP-1RA medications. Subcutaneous weekly injections can cost approximately $1,200.00 per month. Patients can use manufacturer coupons which can give pharmacists time to work with the provider in getting insurance coverage. In addition, providers sometimes can obtain off-label GLP-1RA which can lower cost by about a third.

Most often, GLP-1RAs are injected by pens or insulin syringes with minimal discomfort with different dose frequencies. This medication is titrated up with a starting dose and dose increases until the full dose is reached. Patient counseling is often combined with injections including advice on obtaining optimal health through a combination of strategies including eating smaller meals, eating more slowly, and staying hydrated.

Common side effects are gastrointestinal issues including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The risk of hypoglycemia is minimal with these drugs unless they are used in combination with drugs that cause hypoglycemia.

 Patients using these medications may also report severe or persisting abdominal pain and constipation.

GLP-1RAs are contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as for patients with severe gastrointestinal diseases including pancreatitis, multiple endocrine neoplasia, and medullary thyroid cancer.

Patients with type 2 diabetes who take concomitant glucose-lowering drugs benefit from GLP-1RA independent of Metforin which is commonly used as a first-line medication in the type 2 diabetes patient population.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) have recently issued guidance which advises patients taking GLP-1RA to withhold taking these medications prior to elective surgical procedures. There are reported concerns about potential adverse effects and complications associated with these medications during surgery and patients on daily dosing are advised to consider withholding GLP-1RA the day of the procedure. Patients on weekly dosing are advised to withhold GLP-1RA on the week prior to the procedure.

Obtain the name and contact information of the prescribing healthcare team

Ask how long they have been taking the medication

Ask about their outcomes including how they are feeling on the medication

Also, ask the patient if any other medications have been altered due to adding a GLP-1RA to their medication regimen

Ask about their daily water consumption because it is recommended that they consume 64 ounces a day to aid digestion, minimize or prevent nausea, minimize headaches, and prevent constipation.

In summary, semaglutide is a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists that are given in the form of subcutaneous injections in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is also now being prescribed for obesity based on clinical trials that have shown semaglutide to be effective in promoting weight loss. These drugs are expensive and often not covered by the patient’s health plan but off-label GLP-1RAs can lower the cost.

The treatment of metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes and obesity is changing based on the discovery of GLP-1RAs. For some patients to learn that obesity is a treatable medical condition is a life changer.

AI CAD Solution Dentbird Crown Now Integrates with Shining3D Dental Cloud

Imagoworks Inc, an artificial intelligence (AI) digital dentistry company, recently announced that its flagship AI CAD solution, Dentbird Crown, has been updated to integrate with Shining 3D Dental Cloud.

This integration enables dental clinics and dental laboratories using products from both companies to carry out prosthetic manufacturing tasks more quickly, simply, and intuitively than before, the 2 companies state.
Shining 3D Dental Cloud is a digital dentistry-specific platform provided by Shining 3D, China's leading 3D digital solutions company. The cloud-based platform that allows dental clinics and laboratories to order prosthetic manufacturing by transmitting patient data scanned with oral scanners (Aoralscan3), model scanners (AutoScan-DS), and face scanners (MetiSmile) to dental laboratories.

Through this integration with Shining 3D Dental Cloud, dental clinics and laboratories will be able to establish a more intuitive workflow for crown production, Imagoworks states in a press release. The company plans to continue to collaborate with global dental companies to create a unified new AI CAD system that integrates various digital equipment and software into 1 system.

This seamless data transfer  update enables the intuitive and fast fabricating of dental crowns.

Stratasys Ltd., a leading provider of polymer 3D printing solutions, announced this week its collaboration with Express Dental Labs located in Norman, Oklahoma, during the recent Oklahoma Dental Association Mission of Mercy (OkMOM) event. Together, they offered full and partial dentures to over 55 individuals in need.

OkMOM is a 2-day initiative offering essential dental care free of charge to individuals who lack access to such services. Held in Lawton, Oklahoma, the event brought together dental professionals, volunteers, and organizations to address the oral health needs of underserved populations.

Each patient receiving dentures underwent an intraoral scan on the first day. Express Dental Labs utilized these scans to craft the dentures using Stratasys’ J5 DentaJet® 3D Printer and TrueDent resin. The dentures were printed overnight and distributed by participating dentists the following day, providing patients with well-fitting, natural-looking dentures and a renewed smile within 24 hours.

Tra’ Chambers, owner of Express Dental Labs, expressed enthusiasm about the community impact, stating in a press release, “It is awesome that we can do this for the community. Traditionally, dentures are labor-intensive to manufacture, but when using Stratasys technology, we can serve many more patients in a shorter amount of time. The dentures we print are highly accurate, matching the patient’s gum and tooth color, so the dentures look great and fit well. Also, because the entire denture is printed as 1 piece and does not require any manual intervention, once the digital design is created, if the patient loses their dentures, a replacement can be created overnight with the digital record we have on file.”

This marks the second year that Express Dental Labs has employed the Stratasys TrueDent solution. Last year, nearly 40 Oklahomans in need received new dentures as part of the OkMOM event.

Ronen Lebi, vice president of dental at Stratasys, adds in the press release, “It is truly gratifying to witness the positive impact that our technology, in conjunction with the expertise of Express Dental Labs, has on the lives of those in need, restoring their confidence and enhancing quality of life with better-looking and better-fitting dentures. We anticipate continued growth in the adoption of technologies like TrueDent. It increases efficiency and reduces turnaround time for labs, while lowering the number of visits and overall chair time for patients.”

TrueDent dentures are a full-color, single continuous print of both the denture base and teeth. Stratasys technology allows for multi-colored, personalized appliances to be printed simultaneously on a single high-capacity tray.
