A new $2 million grant program administered by Cyber Umbrella is available to help dental practices test the state of their current IT systems.

The Penetration Testing Grants program is designed to help dental practices assess their risk for becoming the victim of a cyber attack. By conducting these third party penetration tests, Cyber Umbrella aims to help dental practices identify any vulnerabilities in their IT structure.

"Our goal is to reveal hidden vulnerabilities within IT systems and ensure that dental offices, which manage thousands of consumer records, do not operate under a false sense of security," Michael Benson, founder of Cyber Umbrella, says in a press release. "We encourage every dentist to take advantage of our grant while funds are still available. The FBI recently warned the ADA in May about specific hacks targeting dental practices and projected a 300% increase in small business attacks this year. Cyberattacks are on the rise, and even the most vigilant IT departments can miss potential threats. By offering these third-party penetration tests, we aim to provide dental practices with the knowledge of their vulnerabilities and the peace of mind that their systems are secure."

Designed to provide an option for non-FDA certified dental labs and milling centers to produce FDA compliant final products, the DESS PNP workflow is an FDA accredited digital dentistry solution.

The workflow allows dental production facilities that use DESS Premiled Blanks and DESS Ti-Bases for production of custom implant solutions to produce final parts that meet FDA regulatory requirements, according to a press release. The PNP Workflow offers compatibility with more than 30 abutment types, and 18 implant systems covering 56 implant platforms, to

provide flexibility for dental labs and milling centers of all sizes. The solution is available for use with 3Shape scanners and software and VHF milling systems.

The new solution allows for labs using the FDA-validated DESS titanium and ceramic materials in conjunction with the DESS PNP approved digital libraries to create final restorations that meet regulatory standards. The approved products are available directly from DESS as well as from Zahn Dental. The catalog of approved materials, parts, and implant systems will continue to grow, according to the press release.

This digital dentistry workflow and the associated materials allow dental labs to produce custom implant restorations that meet FDA regulatory requirements.

Y-Brush’s 20-Second Toothbrush Designed to Deliver a Quick, Effective Cleaning

Inventory management solutions provider Zimbis recently announced the integration of its software solution with open-source dental practice management platform Open Dental.

This new combination of Open Dental and ZImbis Smart Inventory Cabinets is designed to add efficiencies in dental practice operations by automating inventory tasks and reducing operating expenses, according to a press release.

"We are proud to announce the successful integration with Open Dental, which is a major leap forward in our mission to innovate and streamline inventory management for healthcare providers," says Zimbis President Louis Visser, DDS, in the release. "This integration is designed to empower dental practices to achieve higher operational efficiency and cost savings."

The integrated software platform allows dental practices to conduct real-time inventory management via a Zimbis interface. The system can be set to automatically reorder supplies when stocks reach a specified level while offering detailed analytics about the use of supplies in the practice. Additionally, the Zimbis integration is designed to help practices maintain compliance and documentation with regulations for narcotics and other pharmaceuticals.

(Student Mentoring with Immersive Learning and Enrichment) Healthcare Pathway Program from Henry Schein, the National Dental Association, and the Schattner Foundation, have announced a collection of new dental industry partners. These strategic partnerships have been made to recognize and recruit students from historically underrepresented backgrounds, according to a press release from Henry Schein.

New partners are as follows: the Hispanic Dental Association; the Society of American Indian Dentists; Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry; A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health; and A.T. Still University’s Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health.

The S.M.I.L.E. Program provides a variety of support systems for 9- and 10-grade students interested in the dental profession. Systems include mentorship programs, hands-on learning workshops, networking opportunities, and a capstone project where students will present learnings at the end of the program.

SilverPlug® is described as the only dental material in the world certified for the specific use as a filler and sealant for closing the screw access hole on implant cementable abutments or screw retained crowns.

Dental screening events at schools and community events are an effective way to identify children with acute oral health needs and connect them with a dental care provider that can address the unique barriers that keep kids from having a healthy smile. But providing enough of these screenings to help all the needy children is easier said than done.

That’s why each year millions of children in the United States, including up to half of those with state-funded dental insurance plans, don’t receive the dental treatment they need to be healthy, according to America’s ToothFairy. Children from low-income homes, rural communities, racial minorities, and those with limited English proficiency are faced with many obstacles to the dental care they need to thrive.

Since America’s ToothFairy was founded in 2006, the nonprofit organization has helped more than 2 million children and teens receive oral health screenings by supporting safety-net dental clinics through their National Screening Initiative, with financial support from dental companies like Septodont. Last year, Septodont’s sponsorship enabled over 125,000 screenings across 22 states.

“When our program members have the support they need to identify dental needs in earlier stages, everyone benefits,” said Jill Malmgren, executive director of America’s ToothFairy in a press release. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to increasing access to oral health care for children in need and works with corporate donors from around the globe to help safety-net dental clinics extend services to more children in need.

“The children our members serve often fall through the cracks because their parents are either unaware that early treatment of dental disease is cheaper to treat or that they can receive help at reduced rates and sometimes for free,” she adds. “Catching problems early also frees up resources for the clinics to treat more children and reduces strain on the state-funded programs that are designed to help low-income families.”

When 4-year-old Olivia [the child’s name has been changed here] was screened at a public head start preschool in San Mateo County, California, she told the team from Sonrisas Dental Health that she had never been to a dentist. The screening staff noted that she had generalized decalcification of her teeth, generalized dentin-enamel fractures, and possible dental cavities on at least 9 teeth, America’s ToothFairy states. Sonrisas’ care coordinator learned that Olivia’s mother had been having an extremely difficult time finding a dentist but had still been trying in order to ease her daughter’s pain. 

The girl’s mother was overcome with joy when she learned that Olivia could be seen at Sonrisas the very next day. Since that initial visit, Olivia has completed several dental visits, putting her on track to reach optimal health and enjoy a pain-free smile.

“Some children face great challenges in accessing care,” Sonrisas’ CEO Tracey Carrillo Fecher says. “Many families must make impossible choices between accessing dental care and meeting other basic needs, such as food, rent, or medication. Sonrisas creates access to oral health care by performing dental screenings in low-income public schools and making oral health care financially accessible for families.”

Sonrisas’ community care coordinator also spends time with caregivers discussing the findings and assists them in navigating the public insurance system, providing a concierge-like service in multiple languages, something that is critical for many families. Sonrisas is one of 51 nonprofit partners of America’s ToothFairy that serve children in 22 states across the United States.

“Our program members are uniquely equipped to address the barriers to care that other dental offices cannot,” Malmgren adds in the press release. “As the Title Sponsors of our National Screening Initiative, Septodont helped our members provide more than 125,000 dental screenings last year alone at schools and other locations that serve at-risk kids.”
