Utah-based Ultradent Products, Inc, continues to grow globally and the developer and manufacturer of high-tech dental materials now has a footprint in Lithuania.

The company recently announced the acquisition of Medicinos Linija UAB, known globally as "i-dental," a renowned manufacturer and distributer of dental products headquartered in Siauliai, Lithuania. The addition of i-dental’s network and infrastructure assists Ultradent’s ability to better serve dentists throughout the world, the company says. With i-dental as its most recent acquisition, Ultradent now has offices and subsidiaries in 12 countries.

“With the help of the talented team members of i-dental, Ultradent will be able to empower more clinicians to provide better care for their patients,” Ultradent President and CEO Dirk Jeffs says in a press release. “Ultradent has a longstanding connection with i-dental and founder Gintaras Dapkus, whom we met 25 years ago when he attended one of our educational events. Both companies are driven by a shared mission—the mutual admiration, innovative spirit, and vision between Ultradent and i-dental make this a seamless partnership that will benefit oral health globally.”

Founded in 1992 by Dapkus, i-dental began as a dental supply company and transitioned into a manufacturer of dental materials. The company’s top products include composites, glass ionomers, etchants, liners, and prophy paste. i-dental is ISO certified and has recently passed an MDR audit. Dapkus will remain minority owner and active in i-dental management, according to the press release.

Flavia Pirih, DDS, PhD, is a prominent figure in the field of periodontology, serving as the Tarson Family Endowed Chair of Periodontics and the Chair of the Regenerative and Reconstructive Sciences Division at the UCLA School of Dentistry. She began her distinguished academic journey by earning her dental degree from the Universidade Federal do Paraná in Brazil, followed by a PhD in Oral Biology from UCLA. Dr Pirih further honed her expertise by completing residencies in periodontics at the University of Michigan.

This is the first in a series of dental hygiene articles—Perio Power for the Hygienist—from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). Flavia Pirih, DDS, PhD, presented at the American Academy of Periodontology 109th Annual Meeting in 2023 with a focus on the genetic components of periodontitis and peri-implantitis, the increasing prevalence of dental implants, and the necessary preventive and treatment measures for maintaining peri-implant health. Her lecture is a comprehensive guide for periodontists and dental hygienists alike, providing valuable insights into the complexities of peri-implant diseases and the importance of an evidence-based approach to treatment and maintenance. Her emphasis on genetic research opens new avenues for personalized patient care and highlights the evolving nature of periodontology in the era of advanced dental implants.

While dental implants have revolutionized restorative dentistry by improving function, esthetics, and phonetics, they come with their own set of challenges. The significant rise in implant placements underscores the need to manage peri-implant diseases effectively.

The increasing popularity of dental implants has led to a decrease in other restorative procedures such as endodontic treatments and prosthetic placements. Data illustrate this trend, noting that the global dental implant market was valued at approximately $4.6 billion in 2022, with an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 implants placed annually in the United States alone. This rise emphasizes the importance of understanding the complications associated with implants, particularly peri-implant diseases.


Peri-implant health is characterized by the absence of inflammation, redness, swelling, and profuse bleeding. Establishing baseline measurements for probing depths and radiographic assessments at the time of implant placement is crucial. Healthy peri-implant pockets can be up to 5 mm deep, provided there is no inflammation or bleeding.

Initial radiographic assessments should be conducted when healing abutments are placed, and follow-up radiographs are essential to monitor any changes in bone levels. Bone remodeling typically occurs within the first-year post-implant placement, with bone loss not exceeding 2 mm during this period being considered normal.

Distinguishing between normal and pathological conditions is necessary, particularly in cases where pockets deeper than 5 mm are present but show no signs of inflammation or bleeding. Such conditions can still be classified as healthy if proper baseline measurements and consistent monitoring are maintained.

Peri-Implant Mucositis and Peri-Implantitis


Peri-implant mucositis is the precursor to peri-implantitis and is marked by inflammation, redness, swelling, and bleeding on probing without bone loss. Identifying and treating mucositis early is crucial to prevent progression to peri-implantitis, which involves both inflammation and progressive bone loss around the implant. Studies show significant rates of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis among implant patients. Key risk factors include poor plaque control, smoking, and excess cement.

Peri-implantitis, in contrast to mucositis, is associated with radiographic evidence of bone loss in addition to clinical signs of inflammation. Peri-implantitis can progress rapidly if not managed promptly, leading to severe bone loss and potential implant failure. Data indicate that while the prevalence of peri-implantitis at the implant level is around 8%, it can be as high as 14% at the patient level.

Implants require as much care and monitoring as natural teeth, if not more, to prevent diseases like peri-implantitis. The presence of soft tissue inflammation and radiographic bone loss are critical markers for diagnosing peri-implantitis.


Plaque accumulation is the primary etiological factor for both peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. The importance of rigorous oral hygiene practices and regular maintenance visits is emphasized. The impact of smoking and diabetes on peri-implant health is also discussed, noting that both conditions exacerbate inflammatory responses and increase the risk of peri-implant diseases.

Smoking is highlighted as a significant risk factor, with data indicating that smokers have a higher prevalence of peri-implant diseases compared to non-smokers. Studies show that smokers are more likely to experience crestal bone loss and peri-implantitis. Confounding variables in studies related to smoking, such as self-reporting inaccuracies and the presence of other risk factors like periodontitis, are also discussed.

Diabetes is another critical risk factor. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes are more susceptible to peri-implant diseases due to impaired immune responses and delayed healing. Animal model studies demonstrate the exacerbating effects of diabetes on peri-implantitis, showing faster and more severe bone loss in diabetic conditions.

Preventive measures are essential for managing these risks. Thorough patient education on maintaining oral hygiene, regular professional cleanings, and addressing systemic conditions like diabetes and smoking cessation is crucial. Designing prosthetic superstructures that allow for easy cleaning to prevent plaque accumulation is also highlighted as an important preventive measure.


Both non-surgical and surgical treatment protocols for peri-implant diseases are outlined. Non-surgical treatments include mechanical debridement using curettes (plastic, carbon, or titanium), ultrasonic scalers, and air polishing devices. The goal is to remove biofilm and reduce bacterial load. Non-surgical treatments can be effective in managing peri-implant mucositis but are often insufficient for peri-implantitis, which typically requires surgical intervention.

Non-surgical debridement focuses on disrupting and removing the biofilm to reduce inflammation and bacterial load. The use of plastic curettes to minimize damage to the implant surface is recommended, although plastic debris can sometimes be left behind. Ultrasonic scalers and air polishing devices, such as those using glycine powder, are also recommended for their efficacy in biofilm removal and minimal implant surface damage.


For peri-implantitis, surgical interventions aim to clean the implant surface, reduce pocket depths, and regenerate lost bone where possible. Resective surgery focuses on minimizing the defect and improving access for oral hygiene, while regenerative surgery aims to rebuild lost bone and support tissues.

The author presents several case studies to illustrate these approaches. One case involves a patient with significant peri-implantitis who underwent resective surgery to reduce pocket depths and remove inflamed tissue. The outcome showed reduced inflammation and improved implant stability, although aesthetic results were not ideal.

In another case, regenerative surgery was performed using bone grafts and membranes to encourage bone regrowth around the implant. In this case, I highlight the importance of selecting appropriate cases for regenerative procedures, noting that contained defects and aesthetic considerations are key factors in decision-making.

I share several case studies to illustrate the practical application of the principles discussed. These cases highlight the importance of thorough diagnosis, tailored treatment plans, and the critical role of patient compliance in maintaining peri-implant health.

One notable case involved a young patient with aggressive periodontitis who lost all her teeth by the age of 30. Despite undergoing full-mouth reconstruction with implants, she developed severe peri-implantitis within 2 years. I suggest that genetic predispositions may play a significant role in such aggressive cases and emphasizes the need for careful patient selection and monitoring.

Another case study involves a patient with poor oral hygiene and multiple implants. The patient was initially treated with non-surgical debridement, but due to the severity of the condition, surgical intervention was required. I performed a combination of resective and regenerative procedures, ultimately achieving a stable and healthy peri-implant environment.

The genetic underpinnings of periodontitis sheds light on how genetic factors contribute to the susceptibility and progression of this chronic inflammatory disease. Periodontitis is a multifactorial condition influenced by a complex interplay of microbial, environmental, and host factors, among which genetics play a crucial role.

Genetic predisposition accounts for a significant proportion of the variability in the individual response to periodontal pathogens. Studies have identified several genetic polymorphisms that are associated with an increased risk of developing periodontitis. For instance, variations in genes encoding cytokines, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), have been linked to heightened inflammatory responses and tissue destruction in periodontal disease. These cytokines are critical in the regulation of the inflammatory process, and their overexpression can lead to excessive tissue breakdown and bone resorption.

Genetic variations can influence the function of immune cells, such as neutrophils and macrophages, which are essential in combating periodontal pathogens. Defects in neutrophil function, for example, have been observed in certain genetic disorders, leading to severe forms of periodontitis. Additionally, polymorphisms in genes related to the innate immune system, such as toll-like receptors (TLRs), can alter the host’s ability to recognize and respond to microbial invaders, thereby affecting disease susceptibility and progression.

Similar to periodontitis, genetic factors significantly influence the risk and progression of peri-implant diseases. Peri-implantitis, characterized by inflammation and bone loss around dental implants, shares several pathophysiological mechanisms with periodontitis, including the host’s genetic response to bacterial colonization.

Genetic polymorphisms in inflammatory cytokines and immune regulatory genes also play a critical role in peri-implantitis. The same genetic variations that predispose individuals to periodontitis can similarly affect their susceptibility to peri-implantitis. For example, polymorphisms in the IL-1 gene cluster have been associated with increased peri-implant bone loss, suggesting a common genetic basis for these two conditions.

Genetic screening for specific polymorphisms could potentially identify individuals at higher risk for peri-implantitis, allowing for personalized preventive and therapeutic strategies. This approach aligns with the broader trend towards precision medicine, where treatments and preventive measures are tailored to the genetic profile of the individual.

Genetic Research and Clinical Implications

Ongoing research is needed to further elucidate the genetic factors involved in periodontitis and peri-implantitis. Advances in genomic technologies, such as genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and next-generation sequencing (NGS), have opened new avenues for identifying genetic variants associated with these conditions. These technologies enable researchers to analyze the entire genome and identify novel genetic markers that could contribute to disease susceptibility.

The integration of genetic research into clinical practice has significant implications for the management of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. By identifying genetic risk factors, clinicians can develop more targeted and effective treatment plans. For instance, patients with a genetic predisposition to heightened inflammatory responses may benefit from more aggressive anti-inflammatory therapies or closer monitoring to prevent disease progression.

Additionally, understanding the genetic basis of these diseases can lead to the development of new therapeutic targets. Future treatments could involve modulating specific genetic pathways to reduce inflammation and promote tissue regeneration. This could include gene therapy approaches or the use of small molecules to specifically target the inflammatory processes driven by genetic variations.


My research at UCLA is pioneering in exploring the genetic components of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. Preliminary findings in ongoing studies involving animal models suggest that genetic predispositions can significantly influence the severity and progression of peri-implant diseases.

Data from animal studies where different strains of mice were used to study the genetic variability in response to peri-implant diseases have shown significant differences in bone loss and inflammatory responses, suggesting that genetics play a crucial role in disease progression.

Understanding the genetic basis of peri-implant diseases could lead to more personalized treatment approaches. This research aims to identify specific genetic markers that predispose individuals to peri-implantitis, which could eventually allow for tailored preventive and therapeutic strategies.


In conclusion, preventive measures, including meticulous oral hygiene, regular maintenance, and patient education are critically important. The author calls for a balanced approach in clinical practice, where the benefits of dental implants are weighed against the potential risks of peri-implant diseases. I also want to underscore the necessity for continuous research and innovation in understanding and managing peri-implant health, ultimately aiming to improve patient outcomes and longevity of dental implants.

Overall, I encourage dental professionals to adopt a proactive stance in managing peri-implant health, emphasizing prevention, patient education, and the integration of genetic insights into clinical practice. By doing so, dental professionals can enhance the longevity and success of dental implants, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

Dental software provider Henry Schein One has announced a new cybersecurity offering for dental practices and organizations. Adlumin Managed Detection and Response (MDR) is a detection and protection platform provided by IT service management company, N-able. MDR will provide a team of cybersecurity experts that can monitor systems 24/7, offering comfort for practices and organizations. With this around-the-clock monitoring, MDR can identify and remediate any cybersecurity threats on the spot, according to a press release from Henry Schein One.

Notably, N-able has an Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) system, which monitors computers and servers, assessing and detecting any threats. After a threat is detected, EDR alerts security teams and takes the next steps to eliminate those threats. Alan Rencher, Chief Technology Officer at Henry Schein One, commented on the critical nature of cybersecurity in the press release.

“The volume and sophistication of threats facing dental practices and other health care organizations is continuing to increase. Attackers don’t discriminate. Small and midsized organizations have been especially disadvantaged compared to their larger counterparts with deeper resources,” Rencher said. “Our solution combines N-able EDR’s visibility into an organization’s attack surface, while the MDR solution brings a platform that consolidates many elements of cybersecurity, along with the talent to manage it. This new offering will be significant in advancing cybersecurity for our customers.”

MDR is suitable for dental organizations with up to 20 practices or any larger group that utilizes decentralized servers. It can also be used in smaller practices as an “IT person,” providing valuable insights and enhancing security without needing to bring another employee into a smaller practice. It harnesses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) through its modeling platform which bolsters monitoring and employs an automated response playbook to streamline best practices. Further, MDR will also provide a comprehensive security insight report to inform a practice or organization where security needs to be reinforced or where there may be holes.

The balancing act of dental practice becomes complicated when threatened by bad actors in the digital arena. MDR aims to help in this, according to Chief Technology and Product Officer at N-able, Mike Adler.

“The increasingly digitized world of healthcare means providers like dental organizations need more help than ever to combat today’s cybercriminals as they grapple with a growing onslaught of threats while trying to balance day-to-day business operations with keeping their patients’ data safe,” Adler said in the press release. “Henry Schein One is a renowned technology leader in helping dental practices of all sizes succeed and thrive, and N-able is proud to collaborate with them to deliver the enterprise-grade security capabilities their customers need and deserve.”

There were social activities, a trip to Top Golf, fun breakfast and lunch discussions, and also visits from a Hall of Fame football star and his team’s famous cheerleaders, but when all was said and done, the 20th anniversary Productive Dentist Academy (PDA) conference in Texas was all about education on how to improve production at dental offices and how to provide better care to patients.

The PDA conference took place September 12-14 at the Hyatt Regency in Frisco, Texas, just a short drive from the Dallas Cowboys headquarters. The first 2 days were filled with great lectures, break-out sessions and technology demonstrations broken off into 3 main categories—productivity, investment grade practices (IGP), and Clinical Calibration.

The conference wrapped up Saturday following lectures from a pair of clinicians who shared their stories on practice and life success—Maggie Augustyn, DDS, FAAIP, FICIO, and Eric J. Roman, DDS—along with a media roundtable discussion moderated by PDA Chief Communications Officer Regan Robertson, who co-hosts Everyday Practices Dental Podcast along with Chad Johnson, DDS.

Tomorrow’s Dental Care: A Discussion with the Dental Media

Following are just some more of the many highlights from the event.

Texas dentist Joshua Prentice, DDS, spoke Friday morning on how integrating AI-powered chairside solutions from Glidewell have transformed his Flower Mound, Texas practice. Dr Prentice uses the fastmill.io in-office mill from Glidewell and it’s worked so well he has 3 systems in his practice.

Overjet and AcceptCare/OrthoFi presented on Friday morning on different ways that AI can help practices be more efficient.

Parag Kachalia, DDS, head of clinical practice for Overjet, demonstrated how the company’s AI technology continues to enhance the way dentists treat patients as well as improve the patient’s overall experience. His course, titled, “Introducing Our Newest Colleague…Dr. A.I.”, provided a snapshot of AI’s impact on clinical diagnostics, patient outcomes, and practice efficiency.

If used properly, the technology can enhance patient care and help practices thrive, he says. He explained how Overjet comes into practices and does an analysis of 12 months of radiographs, and the trained algorithms can provide key statistics on missed caries and perio issues.

“It’s a tool,” he warns. “You’re still the dentist. AI is not doing the examination. It’s a behavior change in dentistry but it’s noting unethical. With this AI you show patients what’s happening in their mouth and they can choose not to treat it. Most of the time they see the visualization and say yes.”

Oliver Gelles, chief marketing officer of OrthoFi, followed Dr Kachalia with a course on using AI to boost confidence and case acceptance. The talk covered best practices, key considerations, and ROI metrics to effectively enhance treatment acceptance rates and improve the overall performance of dental practices.

Noting that buy now pay later is here to stay, Gelles explained how AI can help patients with spending and financing decisions, and how practices can use technology to develop an automated pending management system that assists in rising conversion rates.

 on Friday to talk about how PDA got its start 20 years ago. The avid sports fan was wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey as the football-themed conference was held in Frisco, Texas, home of the Dallas football team’s headquarters. The keynote speech Thursday afternoon was made by Emmitt Smith, who helped the Dallas Cowboys win 3 Super Bowls in the 1990s and is the league’s all-time leading rusher with 18,355 yards after breaking the record previously held by Walter Payton.

The theme carried over to Friday when some Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders made an appearance, first cheering on the PDA’s newest Hall of Fame class of dental professionals, and then taking photos with attendees.

Dr Baird, who had a successful practice driven many years ago in part by utilizing 3 Sirona CAD/CAM CEREC systems long before most dentists were using the in-office chairside milling technology, said PDA began when gathered 8 clinician friends 20 years ago to talk about how to increase productivity.

“You know, it really started 20 years ago,” he explains. “I've been productive. I was using milling machines 15 years ago, doing same-day smiles and I was doing fairly large numbers for a dentist. My buddies were asking how I was doing it, and said, ‘What are you doing?’ So, I said, why don't we just do a course?”

There were maybe 11 dentists the second time around and 14 the third year, Dr Baird recalls. But PDA has really grown in the last 2 decades and this year’s event included separate learning tracks on productivity, investment grade practices (IGP), and Clinical Calibration. Most attendees experience large production increases and many return to the annual events, he says. As the conference grew, so did the number of attendees from each practice, as dental assistants, managers and hygienists have all become part of the program, which covers not just technology and clinical techniques, but hiring, training, leadership, and more.

On Friday afternoon Ben Lund and Sal DaiZovi of PDA gave a course on mastering the media to assist clinicians in getting published and helping them become leaders in their communities, while Saturday morning’s roundtable discussion featured media veterans from

and other journals with a focus on helping clinicians and their teams to better understand the media’s role in the industry. The roundtable was sponsored by AcceptCare and PDA and was live streamed.

“It’s a family culture. We love doing this,” Dr Baird adds. “The way we built Productive Dentist Academy was to have a system of continuous growth at a very predictable level. I could predictably tell you exactly what I was going to make in my pocket the next month before we went to that month because of the way we set up our scheduling, the way we set up everything. I think increasing your production is one thing, but if you don't have the consistency of your expenses, then, you know, I would be really happy on the good months and then depressed on the other months. That's how it started, and it's grown every year until now.”

Courses geared toward financial planning and even a hygiene roundtable were part of the 2024 agenda at PDA.

Also on end were a number of vendors demonstrating products and services from a robotic implant solution (Yomi by Neocis) to RipeGlobal’s hands-on training and on-demand learning content, and Millennium Dental Technologies’ lasers.

This AI technology, developed by Toothlens, Inc, observes images taken inside the user’s mouth to provide a robust report score. This score aims to help users prioritize which key areas of their mouth they need to focus on, according to a press release from Dentistry.One.

After scanning and receiving their report, users can then be guided to a virtual consultation where they can receive personalized advice from a verified Dentistry.One dentist.

Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus, a proprietary solution that addresses early-stage tooth decay, will be exclusively distributed by Henry Schein, Inc, it was announced this week.

Henry Schein announced Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with the Swiss company vVARDIS to serve as the exclusive distributor of their drill-free Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus product to larger dental service organizations (DSOs) in the U.S.

Developed by vVARDIS, the creative product is a proprietary solution that addresses early-stage tooth decay by aiding in the preventive treatment of cavity progression, with an innovative simple, quick, and drill-free application. It is widely recognized that poor oral health can impact overall health, and untreated decay can become life-threatening.

The new partnership between Henry Schein and vVARDIS builds on other innovations that support early treatment of oral disease. In late 2022, Henry Schein One introduced Dentrix® Detect AI, powered and manufactured by VideaHealth. Dentrix Detect AI is an AI-enabled x-ray analysis tool that provides real-time clinical decision support and can detect incipient carious lesions more accurately than the naked eye, expanding the patient population that could benefit from the use of products like Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus. Dental professionals who use the Dentrix AI tool and the innovative fluoride product together may help to more effectively treat early carious lesions before greater disease progression occurs, the companies state.

VideaHealth and vVARDIS Form Partnership Around Preventive Dental Care

Currently, Henry Schein is the market leader in selling Curodont™ Repair Fluoride Plus to general practitioners and DSOs. With this agreement, the distributor will have the exclusive rights to distribute the product to larger DSOs, a market segment that is driving significant growth. Henry Schein will continue to distribute Curodont products to other segments of the market and in other markets outside of North America, as product registrations are obtained, the company says. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Dental Creations Launches New Endo Ring and Dental Bib Holders

No matter how great a dental material’s capabilities are, clinicians are not going to want to use it regularly if it doesn’t handle well in their hands.

A dental adhesive, for instance, needs to apply easily and quickly to score points with dentists, who have several choices when it comes to inventorying dental materials.

Troy Schmedding, DDS, who maintains a private practice in Walnut Creek, California, has grown to trust products from Kuraray Noritake Dental, so he had high expectations when the company released CLEARFIL™  Universal Bond Quick 2 dental adhesive earlier this year. The product was officially launched in May 2024 at the CDA Presents the Art + Science of Dentistry annual session, but Dr Schmedding started using it a couple months prior to the launch.

“One of the great things you get with [CLEARFIL] Universal Bond Quick 2 is basically the simplicity,” Dr Schmedding says. “The evolution of CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2 has come about in obviously, a time when universal adhesives are extremely well used. I'm sure they’re used in well over 50% of dental offices in the United States.”

One issue with some of these popular universal adhesives is that the directions can be difficult to follow, or too time-consuming. This is not the case with this latest offering from Kuraray.

Formulated from a custom blend of the 10-Methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) monomer originally developed by Kuraray Noritake, along with Amide, and Urethane Tetramethacrylate (UTM), CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2 is a single-bottle adhesive system that can be applied quickly, without the need for an activation step. The adhesive forms an immediate bond to both dentin and enamel while also creating a thin, uniform adhesive layer that avoids pooling, which allows for stronger, more consistent bonds. CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2 is suited for use with a range of direct and indirect restorative approaches including light-cured composites, and self-adhesive cements. When used with self-adhesive resin cements, a separate activator is not needed.

The adhesive is available in either bottle or unit-dose delivery solutions, allowing individual practices to stock their preferred adhesive format.

“What I mean by simplicity is that a lot of the universal bond adhesives come with directions, they come with an extensive direction formulation,” Dr Schmedding explains. “So, that could be an application time of 10 to 15 seconds; air thin for 10 seconds, and then light cure for 20 seconds, which is fine. I think the results are good with those materials.”

Problems develop, however, when clinicians don’t follow the directions closely.

“I think it comes down to a situation where you've got a lot of dentists that probably don't follow instruction very well when applying, right?” he adds “I mean, that's a well-known thing, so maybe they aren't applying for the necessary time. I think Universal Bond Quick 2 hits that mark for a lot of people in the sense that it's a quick application time and it's a very thin material. So, it thins out very, very well and one of the benefits of that is simply for seating of indirect restorations. It's a very thin film layer. So, what you get is easy application for indirect restorations.”

Dr Schmedding says the bond strength stays in line with Kuraray’s reputation of consistently delivering strong bonds, and so he’s confident the prosthesis will seat completely. But another big plus from the single-bottle adhesive system is the quick, easy application that does not involve mastering a long list of instructions.

“I think a quick application time is important in today's world because not enough people follow the directions from the dental adhesive companies,” he adds. “Those companies’ adhesives are wonderful. They just take a longer period of time.”

Having used popular products like CLEARFIL SE Bond and SE Protect for years with great results, Dr Schmedding is not at all surprised that the company’s latest adhesive delivers the same qualities.

“With Kuraray you're obviously getting a reputation. You're getting the history that precedes this company,” he adds. “For many, many years, I've used [CLEARFIL] SE Bond and I've used SE Protect, working my way from the sixth generation up now to the universal adhesives. I think the reputation behind, you know, the MDP monomer and the whole situation that is created as universal adhesive is based, in my opinion, truly off Kuraray and what they accomplished many, many moons ago in creation of that MDP monomer.”

Kuraray was the original creator of the MDP monomer and other dental companies followed suit and implemented it in their products.

The California dentist says he still uses the company’s traditional SE Protect in combination with universal adhesives with about half of his restorative cases. He’s aware of the growing number of universal adhesive choices on the market, but likes the confidence he gets from working with Kuraray products.

“We see all these tremendous amounts of universal adhesives that have hit the market because they knew about MDP. They knew about what Kuraray had,” Dr Schmedding says. “You know the reputation is there, the research is there. You know the research is dedicated to SE Bond, and what it’s done in terms of a sixth-generation gold standard. I think reputation is huge and that's why I stand by a lot of what I utilize in relationship to Kuraray.”

CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick 2 is suited for use with a variety of direct and indirect restorative approaches including light-cured composites, and self-adhesive cements. When the material is used in combination with Panavia SA Universal, there is no need for a separate activator.

Kuraray has a long history of developing quality materials. The company introduced the first adhesive monomer in dental history by inventing the phosphate monomer Phenyl-P in 1976. This paved the way for the company’s PANAVIA line, featuring the MDP monomer, which was introduced as a high-performance adhesive resin cement for the cementation to tooth structure and to metals. Several bonding agents, cements and composites have followed, but not before Kuraray’s team thoroughly tests everything out.

“I think they're pretty slow to come to market because they really do take the time to run it through the gauntlet of tests, so to speak, to get that result that they're looking for,” Dr Schmedding says. “So, you don't see a tremendous amount of change in the products with Kuraray. They're very streamlined and they're very predictable and it's based off their research and the chemistry.”

The easy application of the material is a feature that Dr Schmedding can’t highlight enough.
“One of the great things, one of the easiest things about this material is just the application. It's really, it's foolproof, right?,” he says. ‘It's got great viscosity; it covers all surfaces with very little pooling that can affect the corners of the restorations because it has such a low film thickness.”

Dr Schmedding often uses Universal Bond Quick 2 in combination with PANAVIA SA Cement, something he’s utilized for years with the previous Universal Bond Quick products, and a process that delivered long-last results.

One of the little known things is that you can use Universal Bond Quick, air thin the material, and you don't have to cure the restoration with the PANAVIA SA Cement, according to Dr Schmedding.

“What you've got within that material is a direct catalyst that will begin setting that material upon application or contact, which is a great thing too, in terms of ensuring complete restoration seating. So, you get this self-cure, auto polymerization effect that will occur in combination with the bonding agent. It's really a game changer for me—and I've been doing that for many years with the predecessor of Universal Bond Quick. I can say we've got hundreds and hundreds of restorations that are still yet to come out. I really like the versatility and the functionality they've created with that material, in combination with their own line of products.”

Dr Schmedding reiterates that universal adhesives are so prominent in today’s dental practices that you must find one that you know will work and one that gives you fast, easy applications. He’s found this with the latest offering from Kuraray.

“I cannot recommend a greater product, especially with the amount of adhesive dentistry that's going on in this world,” he says. “You've got to have the bread and butter, and the bread and butter starts with your bonding agent. The reliability, predictability is built into this 1-bottle system so if handled well and treated well, you'll get great results.”

DPR: How would you describe the current state of the dental industry in terms of technological advancements?

Though the dental industry has made significant strides in adopting new technology, it still has a long way to go before reaching its full potential. Historically, the industry has been sluggish to embrace innovation, with a large percentage of offices slow to move off paper charts and film X-rays. However, today, we see promising developments such as digital records and AI-assisted diagnostics, which enhance patient outcomes and the patient experience. Capabilities like AI-assisted diagnostics, remote monitoring, and seamless data sharing will drive better health outcomes and patient experiences.

Furthermore, I envision a future where cloud-based platforms facilitate greater interoperability across different providers, practices, and systems, allowing for more holistic patient care and better health outcomes. As the technology continues to evolve, it will empower dental professionals to adopt innovative treatment methodologies, provide personalized patient care, and efficiently manage their practices with reduced overhead and increased flexibility. This shift will ultimately lead to higher standards of care, improved patient satisfaction, and more scalable practice operations.

DPR: What advice would you give to dental professionals who are hesitant to adopt cloud-based solutions?

For dental professionals hesitant to adopt cloud-based solutions, my advice is to approach the transition with an open mind and a focus on the long-term benefits. Change can be daunting, especially when it involves the core technology your practice relies on, but the advantages of moving to the cloud far outweigh the challenges. Staying with outdated server-based systems poses significant risks and can hinder your ability to meet patient expectations for seamless digital experiences. The dental industry is evolving, and embracing cloud technology is essential to keep pace.

Conduct a thorough evaluation of reputable vendors and seek references from other dental practices that have successfully made the switch. This research will build confidence in the technology and ensure you choose the right partner for your needs. With careful planning and support, adopting cloud-based solutions can significantly enhance your practice's capabilities, ensuring you remain competitive in an increasingly digital landscape.
