The 2023 National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA) Annual Conference hosted a variety of patient-focused solutions, with a plethora of resources contributed from Henry Schein. This event, which took place November 5 though November 8, 2023 in Denver, Colorado, is specifically designed to provide insight and resources on how to provide better patient care, according to a press release from Henry Schein. Henry Schein Director, Community Health Centers and Corporate Relations, Kathleen Titus, expressed the value of NNOHA’s relationship with Henry Schein.

“NNOHA and Henry Schein have a shared value of helping communities increase access to oral health care, and we are pleased to yet again participate in its annual conference,” Titus says in the press release. “We are dedicated to helping [community health centers] continue to elevate and expand care throughout communities in the United States. As the paramount national voice for 6 million health center dental patients in the country, NNOHA is validating that a healthy smile is a fundamental right, not a privilege.”

Henry Schein had a variety of offerings to showcase, including 3Shape TRIOS 5, DEXIS™ IS 3800 Wireless, Medit i700, and Planmeca Emerald™ S. Alongside these digital dental options, practice management software Dentrix Enterprise also got a showcase, demonstrating the software’s capabilities in data sharing for public health dentistry reports, per the press release.

Henry Schein says they are a staunch provider of resources, training, donations, and more to NNOHA, evidenced by their contributions to the organization for 20 years now, per the press release.

In addition, Henry Schein’s corporate social responsibility program, Henry Schein Cares, took to the event with an oral hygiene kit packing event on November 6, 2023, wherein attendees and members came together to put together 2000 kits. These kits contained oral care products like toothbrushes and toothpaste, to provide the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, with the necessary products to ensure underserved populations receive the care they need. The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless also provides underserved families with housing, health care, substance use treatment, jobs, and childcare, according to the press release.

Kerr Dental’s new ZenSeal™ is the company's first bioceramic endodontic sealer. Released this week, ZenSeal is a calcium silicate-based sealer that features optimal flowability to adhere tightly to dentin and gutta-percha in simple and complex root canal cases, increasing the confidence of clinicians during root canal procedures.

The product features a convenient single syringe delivery system with an applicator tip designed to result in over 60% less product waste per application when compared to one of the leading bioceramic sealers on the market, according to Kerr Dental. By minimizing waste, the material is an economical choice that delivers on results.

"Dentists who perform root canal procedures need specially formulated endodontic products that they can count on for desirable outcomes," explains Kerr Dental's President, David Armstrong, in a press release. "With excellent flowability and sealability, ZenSeal gives endodontic specialists and general practitioners the ability to work with confidence."

The user-friendly ZenSeal is formulated to provide clinicians more efficient and simplified endodontic procedures. The sealer comes pre-mixed in a single syringe for simple delivery and its flowability allows for easy handling.

"ZenSeal flows very well, and it adheres well to the canal walls; the radiopacity is something that I find very beneficial," Fernando García, DDS, explains in the press release. Kerr Dental anticipates the new product will be well received by clinicians because it’s a bioceramic sealer that not only assists with thorough obturation but also offers great value to clinicians. On average, ZenSeal can be used on 9 more teeth compared to one of the leading sealers on the market, according to the manufacturer.

Yona Zhao, senior global product manager at Kerr Dental, concludes in the press release, "ZenSeal is the ideal bioceramic sealer that delivers on all counts: easy handling, excellent flowability, and less waste for greater economy. It truly is the sealer that meets the demands of modern endodontic treatment and simplifies root canal procedures."

Keystone Dental Holdings recently announced the commercial launch of the GENESIS ACTIVE Implant System, a complete restorative portfolio of dental implant solutions based on more than a decade of research and development.

“The GENESIS ACTIVE Implant System is a game-changing innovation that marks a new area in dental implantology. The new dental implant system features a single connection, 3 emergence profiles, and multiple restorative platforms designed to simplify the restorative protocol while ensuring esthetic restorations that mimic the natural tooth contour. The GENESIS ACTIVE Implant System offers a range of distinctive features designed to enhanced both efficiency and esthetics. The AnaTite™ pink anodization process is designed to emulate the hue of natural soft tissue on the coronal aspect of the implant solutions. This process has been shown to align collagen fibers perpendicular to the implant surface which enhances the mucogingival seal and overall esthetics of the case.

The GENESIS ACTIVE implants are coated with a BioSpark™ surface treatment which is designed to mimic natural bone, and promote rapid osseointegration, making it ideal for immediate load protocols. The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has announced a brand new initiative designed specifically to provide deeper periodontal education to dental hygienists. To kick it off, the AAP hosted a Dental Hygiene Symposium at its Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas, that offered insight and education on important periodontal topics. These topics included periodontal patient management, peri-implantitis treatment, soft tissue’s role in healing, and more, according to a press release from the AAP.

This initiative aims to take a robust approach to perio, adding more opportunities for hygienists to brush up on this important topic. The symposium, which was just the start, will be supplemented by things like AAP member-led Dental Hygiene Study Clubs, the Dental Hygiene Recognition Program, the Hygiene Learning Library, and more. Each of these opportunities provides unique experiences for dental hygienists wishing to expand their periodontal repertoire, per the press release.

Dental Hygiene Study Clubs will localize programs for dental hygienists, making it easier and more accessible for them to collaborate and learn from fellow hygienists and AAP members. This part of the initiative also serves to help hygienists build their periodontal network.

The Dental Hygiene Recognition Program is built to bring in hygienists to Study Clubs, continuing education (CE), and other education opportunities.

The Hygiene Learning Library will be an online resource of periodontal information, providing a 1-stop for hygienists to learn more about periodontology.

Finally, the AAP is working on a collection of webinars, article series, and other online content that will provide insight and updates for hygienists.

Because hygienists play such a key role in patients’ overall oral health, the Dental Hygiene Engagement Initiative was a vital step for AAP, according to past president of the organization and head of the Task Force on Dental Hygiene Engagement, Dr Wayne Aldredge.

“We developed the Dental Hygiene Engagement Initiative to deliver high-quality, evidence-based information to hygienists with the goal of enhancing periodontal care and facilitating co-management of patients,” Dr Aldredge says in the press release. “The turnkey Study Club in particular will help members share their clinical expertise and serve as mentors for their local dental hygiene community.”

A recent cross-sectional study has found a connection between good oral hygiene practices, specifically interdental cleaning, and improved blood glucose levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Conducted by the Clinic Masae Minami/Minami Diabetes Clinical Research Center in collaboration with Sunstar, an international oral health care company, the research emphasizes the significance of maintaining oral health for better glycemic control in diabetic patients.

The study took a look at the oral hygiene habits and blood sugar control indicators of 104 type 2 diabetes patients with 15 or more natural teeth. It highlighted a significant correlation between interdental cleaning habits and 24-hour blood glucose fluctuations, shedding light on the impact of preventive dental care in managing blood glucose levels.

The study's methodology involved comprehensive assessments, including oral hygiene habits, blood and urine tests for various glycemic control indicators, and analysis of continuous glucose monitoring data, shedding light on the detailed relationship between oral care and glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients.

One of the standout revelations was the correlation between the frequency of interdental cleaning and the duration spent in the target blood glucose range of 70-180mg/dL during a 24-hour period, known as Time in Range. Patients who engaged in interdental cleaning at least 3 times per week exhibited lower average glucose levels and a higher Time in Range compared to those who did not maintain this oral hygiene practice.

The findings also highlighted the association between the number of teeth and oral hygiene practices, linking them to key glycemic control parameters like HbA1c and fasting blood sugar levels. This study adds weight to previous research demonstrating the interconnection between diabetes and periodontal disease, underscoring the positive impact of managing periodontal health on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients.

The study's outcome, presented at the 66th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japan Diabetes Society, indicates that while a direct causal relationship wasn’t established, integrating regular dental visits and interdental cleaning into oral care routines is expected not only to prevent tooth loss but also to contribute to overall health maintenance and promotion.

Sunstar's involvement in the research stems from a personal narrative, as the company's founder, Kunio Kaneda, battled diabetes, motivating Sunstar's focus on exploring the link between diabetes and periodontal disease, leading to research, new product development, and awareness initiatives in collaboration with medical institutions and universities.

This breakthrough study reinforces the critical role of oral hygiene in managing blood glucose levels for individuals with type 2 diabetes, opening avenues for holistic approaches to diabetes care that incorporate dental health as an integral component of overall well-being. This move broadens the CAM application range, enabling customers to seamlessly integrate Amann Girrbach machines into their existing software infrastructure.

This expansion offers users the flexibility to choose between Amann Girrbach's fully integrated Ceramill Match 2 software and the option to link their milling machines to the "MillBox for Amann Girrbach" software.

Users who work with the MillBox can thus create an individual connection to the existing system to digitally operate the Amann Girrbach Ceramill milling machines.

Christian Ermer, vice president of marketing & digital at Amann Girrbach, emphasizes the seamless integration for MillBox users. "For MillBox users, the 'MillBox for Amann Girrbach' software seamlessly integrates into the familiar MillBox environment and workflows and enables access to the familiar MillBox functions. In addition, this open CAM solution offers extended connectivity options for the users of alternative CAD programs such as 3Shape. This makes it easy to import dental CAD designs regardless of source," Ermer explains in a press release.

The "MillBox for Amann Girrbach" software is characterized by its intuitive interface. The stored, automated functions are designed to shorten the time required for production and minimize manual errors.

Users are still able to secure the complete digital and validated workflow with the Ceramill Match 2 software from Amann Girrbach.

"With the integration of Ceramill Match 2, all the system components are truly optimally matched to reliably achieve outstanding results in terms of restorations in the shortest possible time," Ermer emphasizes in the press release. A well-structured user interface enables intuitive operation.

"CAM and milling know-how are not required to use Ceramill Match 2—even with little experience, milling programs can be created easily and quickly to fabricate a wide range of differing indications. Positioning and aligning the blanks is also quick and easy," he adds in the press release.

Other advantages include the fast calculation of milling paths, sintering-matched and accurate processing of large-span zirconia restorations, and the convenient nesting concept according to the Vita shade guide. "We permanently advance the development of the Ceramill Match 2—in the field of composite fabrication, the Diamond Finish processing mode provides for highly esthetic results. And for titanium implant work, the Ceramill Match 2 allows design and fabrication with angulated screw channels. For the user, this offers advantages such as greater flexibility, high speed as well as maximum safety in a perfectly coordinated workflow," Ermer continues in the press release.

Allie Hogan: My name is Allie Hogan. I'm with The Atlantic implant Institute in Virginia Beach, Virginia. We're here at AAID in Las Vegas. So far the show has been great. 

Yesterday Dr Hogan did hands-on for a full digital workflow, went through everything photogrammetry facial scanning.

A lot of the questions that we get about doing full arch full digital workflow is where to start. Maybe they have one piece of equipment and they want to get into going from analog to fully digital and they just don't know where to begin. So we answer those questions for them. We offer them to come to our classes at the Atlantic Implant Institute where we can teach them everything they need to bring back home to the office on Monday and hopefully go fully digital. At the Institute, we have courses that cater to all doctors, whether you're just starting you've done singles, you're just getting into the full arch game or if you're a veteran, maybe you need some new tips and tricks to bring back to your office. 

So we go through everything there we also have courses about business so if you know the full digital workflow, you know the implant placement, you know the restoration, but maybe you need some help on getting cases in the door or selling them. We're there to help you out.

The modular design of Ceramill Map FX allows users to expand and upgrade ensuring long-term usability and customizability for different dental labs. With high precision short scanning times and connectivity to all major dental CAD/CAM platforms, Ceramill Map FX has something to offer almost any digital workflow.

DMG is set to unveil its latest innovation, the Ecosite Elements nanohybrid universal composite system at the Greater New York Dental Meeting November 26 through 29th. However, the new material is already available for purchase from the company. This new material is said to offer superior esthetics for dental composite restorations. Ecocite Elements offers a concise range of shades, which helps minimize storage requirements and ensures cost savings. The material features NC1 Technology which provides a precise silanization of ultrafine filler elements which creates a homogenous distribution within the material. This allows Ecosite Elements to deliver optimal working characteristics and exceptional polishability.

Described as a next-generation zirconia-infused nanohybrid resin, Rodin Sculpture 2.0 3D printing resin from Pac-Dent features over 60% ceramic filler content and offers a biaxial flexural strength of more than 200 Megapascals, allowing the material to set new benchmarks in wear and fracture resistance. Available in 16 Vita classic shades and 2 bleach shades, the new Sculpture 2.0 material can be used for permanent restorations, and it meets the requirements to be coded as a ceramic restoration for insurance purposes. It can be paired with acrylic-based, light-curable stain and glaze systems to create highly esthetic, long-lasting 3D printed restorations.

Engineered for printing full arch restorations and provisional hybrid dentures Rodin Titan ceramic nanohybrid resin from Pac-Dent is based on the core composition of the original Rodin Sculpture, but features increased flexibility for enhanced impact strength. It is designed to facilitate a swift production process and is available in 6 Vita shades including A1, A2, and A3.

Finally, the Glider integrated dental surgical table from ASI Dental Specialties is designed to be positioned over patient chairs. It includes a floating shelf for additional instruments and can be integrated with surgical motors and other equipment. The glider aims to be a part of a seamless surgical experience, and it can eliminate the need for multiple carts and stands by ensuring quick access to the instruments needed during procedures.
